Just a general question. I was wondering why alot of the hacks do not get installed on vB.org? Obviously one main reason must be because of time, money and alot of hardwork on your behalf. Basically i just thought it would have been a nice idea for when viewing a hack, instead of going through the process of installing it and not liking it, you could view it working here at vB.org. I accept i might get moaned at for this comment but it is just a general question, Thanks.

Bad idea. First thing, all of the hacks here are for vB2, vB.org is running vB3. Secondaly, vB.org is keeping any kind of hacking to a minimum.
Thirdly, there are over 1100 hacks, and you cannot install all of them on one board.
The best thing to do is have a local forum for you to test out hacks - or you can ask for a demo in the hack thread

The Real best thing to do is that the Hackmaker provides us with either a live demo or a set of screenshots.
It would be a really bad idea to install many hacks on vB.org because a lot of hacks are either resource-intensive (at least when adding up more than a few) or they create security leaks. Two things you Don't want on this site. :)

Both good points. I forgot about vB.org running vB3 beta.
I realise it would take alot of resources, i just forgot that there was so many hacks made, I still seem to stumble across new hacks even now :p Just seems annoying sometimes when you have to sign up on a community you have no interest in to view the hack working. I guess this is something you have to put up with if you want to test the hack which is only fair seeing as the author put alot of work into it, and i guess you can always request a tester account. Oh well i was just generaly asking, thanks alot guys

Your best option is to install vBulletin offline and install hacks there, afterwards you can uninstall it and just use the unhacked vB again

True, i currently have another board installed on my server for test purposes, but i only use it to try and make my own minor changes that seem a bit pointless releasing. I tried installing a server thing on my pc but it went horribly wrong and i gave up, wish i could of got it working though im sure that would make things alot easier

Did you use TECK's guide? I used his first time I installed apache/mysql/php on my computer (last year) and it went fine:)

I think i tried it in the past im not sure. I guess i should try it once again. So you can install hacks and everything on a server if installed on your computer?

Yes. With Apache,MySQL and PHP you can use any PHP script (as long as you have the latest version) with MySQL at the back-end:)

*gg*
Most points are mentioned here.
a) security reasons
b) ressource reasons
c) time reasons
and most important:
I'm a purist. I'm not a fan of installing hacks i don't need. I just install hacks which are really useful for our work here.
Ok Erwin isn't exactly like me, so he sometimes does something i don't think it's needed, but he's the userfriendly admin here ;)

There are some packages available on the 'Net that install Apache, MySQL and PHP for you, all in one go. They're compiled Windows Installers, so all you have to do is click a button a few times and it will take care of the rest for you.
These are generally not available for the latest versions of PHP/MySQL/Apache, but you don't really need the latest of the latest for a localhost server. I still use PHP 4.1.2 on my own computer, and Mysql 3.23.49 and Apache 1.23 or so. Works great. Of course, I manually installed these a while ago, but I've tried one of those Insta-install packages once and that worked fine, too.
Also, I find that if a hackmaker makes a hack and doesn't provide screenshots or a publicly-visible live demo, (s)he should really create a test-account for people to use, one perhaps that doesn't have any particular rights outside of viewing the board & the hack...
