Hello there,

I would like to know, if anyone ever realized a vB on CD, i.e. a complete vB on CD for offline usage?

I don't mean by grabbing a vB via offline reader, but by other means?

thx,
-Tom

You can, just put the files onto CD inc. DB file, although whatever computer you use it on, it must have Apahe, MySQL and PHP installed on it.

That's if you trust CD's. A survey was conducted on 100 CD's that were wrote with the same file. They were put in the same cupboard in the same house for the same amount of time (a year). And 34 of them were ruined within a year. :)

Best burn it 4 times then :) So atleast one will play when ya ready (I just had to )

But I have yet to have a trouble with a cd unless my 2 year old grabs it.

Just get an external hardrive or use zip disks - they're reliable :)

No data storage is that is in the normal users PC as most use some sort of die. Stamped CD's that you would buy from a large companey i.e.(Microsoft) will not ruin or wont for quite a while.

Is there no hack that does that already?

All you need to do is put on the CD is your vB files, SQL file.

And as mentioned by me, you need to make sure the computer has PHP, MySQL and Apache installed on it.

(Or why don't you just run a back-up offline)

Check Xenon's profile.. He has an archieve hack which you may use.

I also think you can do what you are after by backing up your MYSQL DB and restore it in a localhost so you'll have a mirror of your forum in your local computer. There is a thread about this process in Hacking Hints forum, you can check it out.

Keeping the mirror in CD-ROM is not a good idea, because as you know you can not write on a CD-ROM in realtime so you can not browse a vb forum which resides in CD ROM. (Say when you log in, vb won't be able to write on sessions table when it is on a CD-ROM).

I was hoping to do the same thing!!!! Has anyone tried this yet?

What I want to do is be able to put all my threads and posts on a CD so I can view them when I am not connected to the internet. I am not looking to remove the threads from teh database or alter them in any way. I just want to have the CD with me so I can view all the OLD posts while I travel with my laptop (no internet connection).

Can someone explain in detail exactly what files I want to copy and record on a CD so I can view my forums as if I was actually on the net? (just for viewing purposes while I am on the road without a connection).
