View Full Version : [FIXED] Suggestion for Full Releases forum...

I hate the new full releases forum, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Here's what I think should be done about it:

Add a new profile field somewhere. If the user selects 'Yes', then display the Full Releases forum as it is now. If the user selects 'No', then display it as it used to be, without the subforums and with all of the hacks displayed in the main Full Releases forum. This would be a great solution, and I think it would work (naturally, when adding a new hack, you'll have to select the category the hack should be in, and it'd be put into its appropriate forum).

The idea was to consolidate the hack database's structure and the Full Releases/Beta Hacks forums' storage and discussion ability. The new forums are now the best of both: categorized and contain discussions on the hacks themselves. Personally, I don't care for it, but I'm sure that's just because I'm not used to seeing it like this.

(side note, Xenon/Erwin: QR box is still tiny in Purple...)

Yeah, I know, but I still think that there should be an option to switch back to the old style i.e. all in one forum.

EDIT: With each passing day my grammar seems to get worse.

I really dont like searching for all the hacks I installed for updated on them. I really would like it back the way it was before..... and wasnt it sorted into categories if you clicked on the full releases section itself? :ermm:

*Bump*

I think this should be considered because I prefer to look for threads in 2 forums, not 18 of them.

I kinda think this is a good idea :)..

After having so many hacks, single Full Releases forum became the bottle neck of vbulletin.org.

There are very good hacks forgotten in the mass of single Full Releases forum which was hosting hundreds of hacks. Everybody could use them but they just didn't know they existed. We even had dublicate hacks just because the author of the new hack didn't know it already exists. Why was it so? Because everybody was just fishing the hacks in the first a few pages of Full Releases section so the hacks which were recent or recently bumped get the whole attraction and all others were lost in the dust until somebody accidently bumps it.

With our growing number of released hacks, one forum was just not enough and also it was killing many old but nice hacks with its crowd. I believe this structure is much more convenient and it will become better in the future when admins create other ways for vb.org visitors to access "good hacks" other than checking the bumped threads of Full Releases forum.

My 2 cents.

It will just take time to get used to;)

I think it is a good idea considering the number of hacks hosted here at vBulletin.org now a days.

True there are more forums but it should be easyer to find what you are looking for now. Beats surfing through tons of pages in a forum if you ask me. And speaking of searching for a hack, use the search engine ;)

What used to be a 2 minute check through the "FULL RELEASES" Forum, will turn into thirty minutes of browsing 16 separate subforums. Sometimes simply is better. Wouldn't 15 members browsing one forum use less bandwidth than 15 members changing pages 50 times to check so many subforums?

My 2 Cents...

It's easier to find any specific hack, but now it is much harder to find new hacks and hack threads recently posted in, etc. Sometimes 2 beats 18.

There are pros and cons of each idea. From our perspective, the current categorization and subforums have advantages that outweigh the disadvantages.

If you want to access new hacks, you can always use the list in the main page. It lists the hacks for the last 2-4 weeks.

i dont like way the sections are made for the hacks as they all in sub sections.Maybe easier for others to find etc but i hate it cause when u go inside full hacks u see certain sections lit up but to read all posts u gotta go though each section indiviually.
Whereas the ld way you just got 1 or 2 pages and just read em that way.

Who decided to make em that way ?

you just made a lot more work for us + also a lot of posts are gonna go un-noticed as each and every one has to go in each sub section to see if there are any new posts.

I suppose we could always use `Get new Posts` from main forum page but this shows every post on the board from all sections.

I find vb.org not as easy to navigate now and this is not cause u upgraded to vb3 either - its because u made all sub sections and means a lot of looking for stuff for the end user.

Whew... took me a while to debug, but it finally works. :) Enjoy the option of using the New Layout or the Old Layout.

Well, since my other thread was met with the equivalent of "your opinion doesn't matter," I figure I would add something here instead.

Is there a way to extend this "Old Layout" link so that when you respond to a thread, you aren't automatically taken back to the subforums?

I can think of ways, but they would be complicated to implement. Anyway, just a thought.

It doesn't do that for me.

So, you're saying that when you browsing the "Old Layout" (which is a well-structured search of all of the subforums), you look at a thread and reply to it, you have a link back to the same page that you were on in the old layout?

Xenon

well each better browser has normally a back button and this leads me to the same page i were before i visited the thread, so if i saw the subforums it'll stay at the subforums and viceversa

I see what you mean... mmm... it can be done, but would mean passing a variable forward and modifying 1 php and a couple of templates...

Can we wait till RC1? I don't want to make it harder to upgrade. :)

Xenon: When you've posted in a thread, you'd have to go back three pages to get back to where you were. So yes, it can be done via the browser, but it's still equivalent to clicking a dropdown menu and choosing where you were at.

I'm not trying to be a jerk about it, my original post was just a suggestion, and I'm not sure why you're responding to me as if I'm some sort of idiot. I started a different thread because the point I touched on was separate from what was discussed in the other thread. Your treatment of me and of this issue certainly isn't making me want to hang around at vbulletin.org.

Erwin: I'm in no hurry, as I said, it was just a suggestion. Thanks for taking it seriously. :)

It's all good, people, no need to get upset over small things. :) When I have time, and after we go to RC, I will look into this. :)

i really don't know what's up.
I didn't talk about something hypothetical.
I use the back button of the browser myself every time, and actually it just needs two clicks, and these can be close together, so it's the fastest method, as the old page is also cached, so it hasn't to be reloaded each time.

A dropdown would be possible of course, but as said, it's a slower method to get the same effect.
I'm not a fan of hacking things into a board with no real use, and this wouldn't have a use in my eyes.
It has nothing to do with you, i just wanted to mention the fast way.
I don't know if you would be pleased if i just have answered with a serious "no"?

So i really don't have a problem with you, and if you thought i want to treat you like an idiot, i'll excuse myself, as i didn't plan to do this.
