Whos Online Hack - Showing more users than are really there

OK, so I have a questions. I operate a board and we are new (5 months) we have a few thousand members and our competitior is about 1 year old with about 3 times as many members.

We have come to find out they they are using a hack to show more users than are actually there. Does a hack like this exsist? Or did he have someone custom write it?

I am asking becuase we had several of our members (that were also members there) send us email and tell us that there names were showing over there on the Whos Online, but they were never online...can this be done?

yeah is easy to do but is it worth all the effort.
If it says your highest amount of members online at same time is 100 then let it be 100 - if its 1000 then fair dues but what does it do for you end of day - sounds like you both rivals seeing who has most on

I agree with what you are saying here, and as I said I was just trying to confirm that this was infact what they were doing. These guys even went as far as hacking into my system using password breakers. We are now much better protected. However I have noticed that since they started using this their board has gotten busier. I believe that because of the fact they "seem" busier more people want to go there.

I really just wanted to confirm that it was possible, as in emails they have denied it. I just knew that they were full of it, because as I said people wouldn't even be on, but there names were showing like they were on.

You just add a time so all users that were on in the last 30 min show online right now pretty much. Very simple to do.
