lotto/contest/random number gen?

Hi guys, I'm looking to impliment a contest system on my boards. What we do is purchase (for real) an item, usually expensive ($200-$500) and raffle it off to various members. What I would like to do is have some system where I can place certain members into the lottery and have some "forum-wide" visible random generator" pick the winner.

Any ideas if anything would be suitable?

I've done a search and seen there are lotto addons for the store hack, but I dont want to impliment something that complex, that's really targetted for RPG sites anyway.

Maybe something like a random "$bbusername" picker, that selects from a defined user group?

Is there a way I could enter some code into a post, something like
-----------------------------------
And the next winner is:
$bbusername[random]
-----------------------------------

from a particular/defined user group ID?

Thanks for any advice or help. One thing that is useful about vB3, it lets you put people into multiple sub-usergroups. So I could create a usergroup called "lotto" or something, and add ticket buyers into that usergroup as well as them being "registered" users. It could be very useful to exploit these sub-usergroups for something like this.

I know we are not coding for vB3 yet, but it's worth bearing in mind. ;)

Yeah I would be interested in something liek this as well...

I'd perfer something that allowed users to enter the contest (registered users) and at the end of a specific time a random winner would be drawn. Or it could be a true contest where they try to get as many referals over a certain period of time (I'd really like this) Any help would be nice :)
