View Full Version : Quick Quote II -Quote posts instantly in your Quick Reply box

Hi,

This is not an update to my other Quick Qoute (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54759) hack. The other hack is a stand alone feature which works with or without the Quick Reply box.. This one does not..

To use this hack you MUST already have the Quick Reply box hack (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34597) installed.

What does it do? This hack will allow you to instantly quote any post or multiple posts in your Quick Reply Box.

How it works: In the upper righthand corner of each post will be a small "QuickQoute" checkbox.. When you click it the text from that post and the original poster's username will automatically be inserted into your Quick Reply box with quote tags around it.

Improvements over the other "Quote Selected" add-on:

Works with all browsers
You can quote multiple posts
No need to highlight any text. Posts are quoted instantly.
Includes original poster's username

Very easy to install.. 1 file edit, 1 template edit, and 1 template to add.

Works with vB versions 2.2.X and 2.3.X.

If you find this hack useful please click install. :)

Optional add-ons
If you would rather use an image button instead of a checkbox see this post by Oblivion Knight:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?postid=416557#post416557

If you would like your browser to automatically scroll down to the quick reply box when the QuickQuote box is checked, see this post:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?postid=414669#post414669

Also, thanks to Velocd for fixing the small empty space in the postbit. Hack instructions in the first post have been updated. :)

It should, as long as the quick reply form name is "vbform" and the textarea name is "message".. If you still have the "Quote selected" add on installed be sure to use the instructions in my 3rd post.

I was thinking about removing the other one and just adding this as it seems a lot better.

Hopefully that shouldn't be too difficult, i'll let you know if anything goes wrong....shouldn't do, but you never know

Ok uninstalled the other one and changed the 'post' things back to 'vbform' so the smilies work again...Seems to work fine

Only problem i've found, is it wont quote from the first post in a thread...is this just an error on mine?

I'm guessing so b/c it works with all posts on my board.. Not sure why it would skip the first post. I'm using FireFly's Quick Reply hack btw.

I'll let you do that addon b/c in all honesty its not something that I would want.. And the reason is that it would be rather annoying when you're trying to quote multiple posts.. Glad to hear that it worked for you though. :)

Excellent work EvilLS1!
You've just about hit the sweet spot with this addon :).

Is there any other way to make it work? As it is now, it adds a big gap between the checkbox and the post.. I tried to make it in to a button and place it next to the Quote button on the postbit template, and it worked, but it still adds the gaps and doesn't quite work design wise..

Sorry, I know I'm never satisfied am I..? :nervous:

Or just rid of the checkbox, and use an image button, and it would simulate sorta how the vB3 quick reply system works. (when you click the button and are redirected to the quick reply, of course in this case the quote is inserted into the quick reply)

Oblivion Knight, This is the only way I know of.. You might try placing the button in a different place. Maybe under the user's location on the left.

corsacrazy, Try this (haven't tested it myself).. And if that doesn't work try searching for "javascript toggle function" on google. It can be done but I didn't bother adding it because its hard to find one that works with all browsers.

<input type="checkbox" id="p$post[postid]" onclick="if(document.p$post[postid].p$post[postid].checked)
document.post.message.value = document.post.message.value + document.p$post[postid].elements[0].value;

If you want to rid of the gaps that placing <form> tag inside of tables sometimes generates, add this style attribute to your form tag:

style="display:inline;"

It should do the trick, as it works for me. ;)

Bugs:
1. Cant click on the Post Reply button anymore.
2. Java Script error, Line 268, Char 1, 'document.p655.elements' is null or not an object.
3. You cant quote the first post in a thread
4. when you UNCHECK an already CHECKED quote, it adds it. (If you click on the quick quote check box once to check it [and add to quick reply], then check it AGAIN to uncheck it [you would THINK this would remove it from quick reply but instead it adds the same quote])

You gonna fix them here or release an update?

EvilLS1

Ramsy,
What version of vB and what browser are you using? Also which Quick Reply hack are you using?

This hack shouldn't have any effect on your post reply button.. And you're the only one who has mentioned having this problem so I'm guessing that this hack is conflicting with another one that you've installed earlier.

#3 One other person has mentioned this, but I (and most others) are not having this problem, so again I'm thinking it has something to do with which version of quick reply that you're using or its conflicting with another hack.. I've tested this with FireFly's quick reply, and the latest versions of Mozilla, Opera, and IE..

#4 yes I'm aware of that.. But to make it remove the quote when unchecked would require using the JS toggle function which doesn't work with all browsers. So simply clicking "reset" on the form works for me. You could always use a button instead of the checkbox.

I'm sorry that it didn't work for you, but I can't fix problems which I cannot duplicate at my own board.

EvilLS1

I just took a look at the Quote multiple posts hack and I think its definitely whats conflicting with this hack. It puts all the messages inside of a single form, and this hack is putting a form in each postbit.. You cannot embed a form inside of another form, so this is whats causing your problem.

Not with this hack, however it might be possible to make some minor adjustments so that it could work with the quote multiple posts hack..

Try this:

Reinstall the Quote multiple posts hack by xiphoid exactly as you had it..

Then at the top of your "quickquote" template add this:

</form>

Still in the quickquote template, add this at the bottom:

<form action="newreply.php" method="POST">
<input type="hidden" name="s" value="$session[sessionhash]">
<input type="hidden" name="threadid" value="$threadid">

If you've installed my "Quick Edit" hack you will also need to add that code to the top & bottom of the "showthread_quickedit" template.

I haven't tested this so I have no idea if it'll work or not, but it might be worth a try if you want to use both hacks together.

Good luck with it.

Thats good to hear. Thanks for letting us know.

Also, I added a link to your image button instructions in the second post of this thread. :)

BrandonC,
The only things I can think of to check are:
*If you have more than one template set be sure you added the modifications to all of them.
*Make sure you spelled the template name correctly (quickquote).
*Make sure your postbit contains the $quick_quote variable.

I know those are all obvious things that you've probably already double checked, but if you've added the code to admin/functions it should be working for you.

It should if you make one minor change to the quick reply form.

In the showthread template find:

<form enctype="multipart/form-data" action="newreply.php" name="quickreply" method="post" onSubmit="return validate(this)">

Replace it with:

Larry,
Check your quick reply box template (showthread_replybox if you're using Firefly's hack) and make sure the name of your quick reply form is "vbform".

It should look like this:

<form enctype="multipart/form-data" action="newreply.php" name="vbform" method="post" onSubmit="return validate(this)">

Then scroll down a little and make sure your textarea name is "message".. It should look like this:

<textarea name="message" rows="7" cols="$textareacols" wrap="virtual" tabindex="1"></textarea>

Thats about the only thing that could cause a javascript error.

Larry@IOG
08-05-2003, 10:59 PM
I have a 12 in place of this 7

rows="7"

Larry@IOG
08-05-2003, 10:59 PM
Thats the only difference though

EvilLS1
08-05-2003, 11:09 PM
That shouldn't make any difference. If you have a mozilla browser you can see what the exact error message is. If you have it, go to a thread and click quickquote, then click tools + web development + javascript console and it'll tell you the exact error.

What browser are you using btw? Also, are you using the hack instructions from the first post in this thread?

I can't think of anything that would cause a javascript error other than the form names not matching.

Just for the heck of it, try this:

In your quickquote template find this:

<A HREF="#vbform"><smallfont>QuickQuote</smallfont></A><input type="checkbox" onclick="document.vbform.message.value = document.vbform.message.value + document.p$post[postid].elements[0].value">

replace it with this:

<A HREF="#vbform"><smallfont>QuickQuote</smallfont></A><input type="checkbox" onclick="document.vbform.message.value = document.vbform.message.value + document.p$post[postid].message.value">

Larry@IOG
08-06-2003, 01:47 AM
That did not work either

Also I am using IE6 but it is not working for any of my members

Oblivion Knight - I tried the new text file instructions. But, no its not working again :( . This is what happens :

1. When i click on the image that appears, the page just refreshes. When i click on the image again, it gives me javascript errors in the status bar and this time, it doesn't refresh at all.

But nothing towards the required effect happens, that is to quote.

Thanks for your help again.

Oblivion Knight - Actually, I already have the checkbox version installed on my forums. Now with your instructions, i just changed the quickquote template ( complete template ) replaced with your code.

But, it still doesn't work for me.

Am i missing something ?? Do i have to make changes or remove any code from the initially installed checkbox version ??

Thanks for any help.

Nope, originally you'd have needed to add a bit of java to your postbit template (found in the anchor instructions). With the code I've just posted, that java is no longer required.. :confused:

Andrew - Unfortunatly, it still doesn't work for me.

I am not sure, whts wrong with me. I have followed the instructions, given very clearly and yet, i get the same errors, i mentioned in my previous post.

Okay, I have also installed quick edit, does that make any difference ? Also, whats the anchor instructions, you mentioned for your previous version. where can i find that ??

Thanks much for your valuable time.

Oblivion Knight

If there was no conflict between the checkbox version and the QuickEdit mod, there shouldn't be a problem between the second image version and QuickEdit since they're based on the same java structure..

The Anchor instructions can be found HERE (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?postid=414669#post414669).

No problem, I hope that we can eventually get this working for you.

Thankyou for the feedback leesa :).

Hello OBK,

I placed the anchor instructions at the top of my postbit template : this was the anchor instruction :

<script language="JavaScript">
<!--

function insertAtCaret (textEl, text) {
if (textEl.createTextRange && textEl.caretPos) {
var caretPos = textEl.caretPos;
caretPos.text =
caretPos.text.charAt(caretPos.text.length - 1) == ' ' ?
text + ' ' : text;
} else {
textEl.value = textEl.value + text; // for non MSIE browsers just append it
}

return true;
}// fn

//-->
</script>

And then, I replaced the entire contents of quick quote template with this code :

<FORM name="p$post[postid]" style="display:inline;">
<div style="position:absolute; z-index:1; visibility: hidden">

<textarea name="message" rows="7" cols="1" wrap="virtual" tabindex="1">Originally posted by $post[username]
$quotetext

</textarea>
</div>
<a href="#vbform" onclick="document.vbform.message.value = document.vbform.message.value + document.p$post[postid].elements[0].value"><img src="{imagesfolder}/quick_quote.gif" border="0"></a>
</FORM>

However, in your anchor instructions file, you had made a mention of this :

Find:

code:
onclick="document.vbform.message.value = document.vbform.message.value + document.p$post[postid].elements[0].value"

Replace with:

code:
onclick="insertAtCaret(document.vbform.message, document.p$post[postid].elements[0].value); document.vbform.message.focus();"

which template do i find and replace this last step. I checked it the postbit and quickquote template, but i don't have any such code to replace.

Also, previously, i didn't have any conflict between quick quote and quick edit hacks. they are qorking individually very fine. One more to mention is that, I have installed quote selected also for my boards, does that affect anyway ??

Thanks for all the help and sorry to trouble you soo much.

Cheers

Nice hack!

Just a thought: Wouldn't it be nice if the quotes have this information aswell:

Originally posted by $originalposter on $postdate at $posttime

But the question is, how do i get the $postdate at $posttime in the quote?

Best regards,

EvilLS1

Aaron1,

In your quickquote template replace this:

Originally posted by $post[username]

with this:

Originally posted by $post[username] on $post[postdate] at $post[posttime]

Dewayne thanks for replying!
I already tried that. But it won't work.

I might be wrong, but i think $post[postdate] and $post[posttime] are functions(?) that are defined in newreply.php only, and not in Showthread.php. I guess that's why it won't be displayed.

Maybe the showthread.php needs some additional hacking to show the postdate & time?

Aaron,
Are you sure you used the correct variable?

I tested this on my own board and it works fine (see screenshot).

You are right! I think i tried using $postdate & $posttime instead of $post[postdate] & $post[posttime], very stupid ;-)

But i think this is a nice addition to the hack itself, especially when there are more posts of a user, so the quotes are more clear that way....

Thanks dude!

MadCat,
As long as the name of your quick reply form is "vbform" and the name of the text area is "message" it should work with any quick reply box.

Check those two things and if you still can't get it to work post a link to the quick reply box hack that you're using and I'll take a look.

Have you tried it with that quick reply box? It should work with it because the form and text area names are correct. If it doesn't work, I would suggest installing FireFly's quick reply hack or one of the others.

MaDCaT75

I just assumed it was designed for FireFly's version of quick reply that's all. I will try it with the one I have installed. I was going to install FireFly's quick reply but the quick reply box didnt show up even though I did everything right, I had my other admin check it too :bored:

Got a little problem. I cant find this code in my postbit template:

<smallfont>$post[icon] <b>$post[title]</b></smallfont>

EDIT:

I think it may be because we have our edit and quote buttons on the left side.

This is my boards here: http://www.advancedgamers.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?postid=32408#post32408

As you can see, we have a skin on it, so thats probably why I cant find that code. Any way around that?

EvilLS1

Conroy,
Its just basic HTML so you can place the $quick_quote variable anywhere in your postbit template and it'll work. Just use table tags to align it where ever you want.
If you can't get it aligned just post the contents of your postbit template here and I'll add it for you.

FYI: In the interest of saving bandwidth I tested this by inserting the javascript code under the headinclude line in my showthread template instead of at the beginning of my postbit template. It functions that way as well, and in doing it that way, you don't have an instance of the same javascript source file being repeated with each and every post. It is only in your source once.

Thanks for the nice hack. :)

EvilLS1
09-05-2003, 04:38 AM
SWFans.net,
I'm not sure what you mean? Other than the onclick function, this hack doesn't put any javascript in the postbit template.

{edit} I think you're talking about Oblivion Knight's Anchor addon. I agree, it would be better to put the javascript in the showthread template so that its only loaded once.

When I try to make the checkbox be the img instead..i get javascript errors and nothing happens...any ideas?

EDIT: Nevermind..i came up with a lil solution myself..
and here it is..i think its for those of us who are frustrated by java..:D

<FORM NAME="p$post[postid]" style="display:inline;">
<div style="position:absolute; z-index:1; visibility: hidden">

<textarea name="message" rows="7" cols="1" wrap="virtual" tabindex="1">[/QUOTE]Originally posted by $post[username]
$quotetext [/QUOTE]

</textarea>
</div>
<A HREF="#iname$post[postid]" onclick="document.vbform.message.value = document.vbform.message.value + document.p$post[postid].elements[0].value"><img src="images/quotedown.gif" border="0" name="iname$post[postid]"></A>
</FORM>

there is my quickquote template... works pretty decently i think....tell me whatcha think...

Please note I added a '/' infront of the first quote to prevent it from doing the stupid quote box..

Installed and works great! One little thing though. Consider it a bug. When you deselect the quick quote box, the quote is still there. Is there a way to delete the quote when deselecting the box? (I'm lazy, I don't wanna hightlight and delete it :p)

aquariumpros,
Do you by chance have the "quote multiple posts" hack installed? If so, thats the cause of your problem. This hack isn't compatible with the other one.

Sonikku,
Just use the reset button below the quick reply box to clear the quote instantly. :)

I have used the image version both with and without the anchor fix.

I am finding that sometimes it works perfectly, but other times, it inserts the quote, then reloads the page, which of course removes the quote.

Anyone got any ideas why this may be?
That most likely happens when you go to a thread by clicking the latest post link on index.php or go to the last new post directly instead of clicking the thread's title link on forumdisplay.

Using the checkbox version should fix it.

I just installed this hack on my board and it works fine for most of my users. The only problem I have is with a Mac user using Mozilla...she is getting a fragmented arrow in the middle of all the posts in the thread (see attached screen cap). Any ideas what might be causing this and how I can fix it for her?

(ps. I installed both the Quick Edit and Quick Quote II....not sure which one is causing the problem but since the arrow is appearing in ALL posts I'm assuming it's Quick Quote II because that appears in all posts as well, whereas QuickEdit only appears for that user's posts).

EvilLS1

Emmy,
I registered at your site and logged in with Mozilla, yet I was unabled to reproduce the bug (I could see the quick quote checkbox and everything looked fine).. However, I wasn't able to check the Quick Edit feature because my account isn't validated yet. If you will validate my account and point me to your test forum I'd be happy to check it for you.

In the mean time, you could try relocating the $quick_quote variable in your postbit template to see if the problem goes away. Some browsers are just picky about the placement of forms and will do things like that.

Dewayne

Thanks Dewayne, you're validated now. You can use the Board Business forum for testing...that is where the original post of the problem by my user is (under "New Quick Edit button", even though I'm guessing it's a Quick Quote II issue).

Thanks for your help! My other users are loving the new "quick" additions! http://bonanzaworld.net/thumbsup.gif

EvilLS1
05-14-2004, 05:52 AM
Hmm.. Weird, I've viewed it with Mozilla, IE, and Opera but can't seem to duplicate the problem. Maybe it only happens with a certain version of Mozilla? Either that or it must be a mac thing.

The only thing I can think of to try is to temporarily remove the quickquote hack and ask the Mac/Mozilla users if the problem goes away, then if it does you could try reinstalling it and adding the quick quote checkbox in another location. Sorry that I can't be more helpful but its almost impossible to fix the bug if I can't duplicate it.

Oblivian, any chance of getting this bug worked out? I would prefer to just have a button but a lot of us use "First unread post" and "last post" buttons, and its too annoying to keep it the way it is. I would, and others too would appreciate it, and even if not it would be nice to know that you won't be working on a fix, so we can get rid of it altogether. Thanks.
