Go to Style Manager and edit your style.
Scroll down to (for example) Body, and in the "Extra CSS Attributes" box, put something like this:
background-image: url(/forums/images/image.jpg);
I did this for other sections as well, and look and behold, I changed the looks all over the place in a couple of minutes :)

also if your {pagebgcolor } is getting in the way go to the replacments and make
{pagebgcolor } replaced by nothing (clear out the replacedby textares)
you cant do this in the style editor because if you leave a box empty it will load the default in for you. but the cool thing is if you go to the style editor and edit other colors besides pagebgcolor and not touch pagebgcolor it wont change to the default
