I'd recommend buying the SAMS Teach yourself PHP in 24 hours book. I think its on amazon.com somewhere but i bought my copy from a book store...
So far i'm at the image manipulation in PHP chapter because i stopped reading it before my exams but its a fantastic book. Only thing i didn't like so far was the chapter on Object-Orientated programming but there's still plenty of time. It's simple yet goes into a lot of detail.
Also you have to keep coding and coding whilst your reading the book as there's nothing better than hands on practice :).
Excellent buy!

Whether you like OOP or not, you'd better get used to it because every major language uses it now, and I bet PHP5 will...
edit:
PHP version 5, expected to appear in beta form by March, 2003, and released in the summer of 2003, could change all that. Significant performance improvements and a much more complete object-oriented programming environment will allow PHP to provide a powerful Web front end for enterprise-class .NET and J2EE-based applications.
Good for me who actually uses some of that stuff now, bad for most vB hackers who couldn't care less. :)
