View Full Version : 2.3.0 to VB3, Is it worth upgrading?

Just wondering, from what I've heard upgrading to VB3 from 2.3.0 or a later 2.2.x version will not really be an option since the code is going to be a lot different.

Is this true? I'm sure some of you compulsive hackers realize how much time we have all put into our boards, and the thought of doing that all over again does not sound fun at all.

I just upgraded to 2.3.0 today using a side by side file comparison program, which took me maybe an hour tops and I was able to keep all of my modifications, but when I hear things like VB3 is going to be completely recoded from the 2.2.x/2.3.0 series, it makes me wonder if it's going to be worth it to upgrade, let alone if it is going to be possible. I mean if the files are 90-100% different, you can immagine the frustration..

Obviously there will be some feature enhancements, but I've personally added a TON to my board. Many of these things that I've done I am not sure if they will work on VB3.

It just makes me wonder if it's worth the time and effort.

What do you guys think about this?

well read through the vb3 discussions here and on vb.com
there are a lot of users which want to wait until all of the hacks they use are ported over.
some want to update immediately....

it depends really on yourself

I'm planning to wait until more vB3 hacks arrive ;)

Most vB2 will not work for vB3 so it depends on how much you depend on these hacks and how able you are to port them over to vB3.

i dunno personally ive got a plan for my copy of vb3..

tho i wont be updating a 2.2x board that is hacked to it..
due to it being probs near impossible and the length of time it may take for hacks etc

tho i have to say a few folk will probs not need to wrry as from the fearure list ive seen vb3 will be packed so many wil be able to run it without hacks to achieve what they maybe had before

Thanks guys. I have over 70 hacks installed now, some which are very extensive, so I don't think I will be upgrading unless some security issues arise. :) Or like some of you said, until I can port over a majority of the way my board works now, which is nothing close to the original code...

A lot of the hacks I have installed are small enough not to be too much trouble to port over, I hope.
Also I'm expecting some of the new functions of vB3 will take the place of some of the hacks I have installed!

I guess I'll only know when it's on my test site :D

:p I've just decided not to upgrade to vB3 -- there are a lot of extra features that I don't find particularly useful. However, I hear the amount of queries went down in vB3 quite a lot .. so I'm stuck.

I'm going to upgrade once I have modified the code and database structure for my addons to work with vB3 (I depend heavily on my addons). I'll have to tinker with the install file too, because I don't want to do all the isht manually once I've upgraded. I suppose I'll just run a test board elsewhere and modify it to my satisfaction, then proceed with switching it over to my main forums. I figure once everything's in place on the test board, it will take maybe an hour tops to do my thang.

Another thing that's important for hackers to consider is waiting for vB3 Gold because you'll probably need to do file hacks over and over and over and over and over (like the energizer bunny kinda), and of course the new vB3 style is coming with Gold.

Depending on how easily existing hacks can be updated to work with vB3, I would say once it becomes Gold...

Of course, if existing hacks cannot be updated, then I will not for a while;):p

Well vbulletin.org isn't upgrading all the hacks. Users will have to. Most likely the people who made each hack will upgrade their own hacks.

I will be recoding all hacks I have used before for my specific use for vB3, and yes in its beta stage I will be using it publically, keeping it updated with vB.com releases and patches though. I have also increased security, and moved my *secret* board to a new server which has no web administration panel for sytem admins, and cannot connect to the main system through http connections.

2.3.0 hasn't given me any problems yet... I'd say it's the most stable yet..

no point updating yet
altho Vb3 does replace a lot of the hacks it still hasn't been released in Gold yet
and it seems a lot of updates are slated for vb3.1
so is it really worth updating yet

hmm most of my small hacks are in Vb3 as standard now like Preview pms and quick reply

so only major hacks i will be adding again
Varios Bbcodes
Msn Tab Hack
Vb chatbox
proarcade
VB journal lite
VB Links Directory
Vb stats
VB Flash Player
vB HTML, TXT, JAVA Integrator 2.0 - Automatically display any HTML, TXT or JAVA file integrated into vB - by Erwin

also will see for an update to photopost as it is an integral part of the forum as many of the users when they have no space on websites upload to the gallery and link from there

considering hacks :
vB POP3 / IMAP Email Client 1.4 - Web-based access to POP email accounts
Top 10 Thread Stats v1.0
Who am I a buddy of?
User Comment System
Lesane Store (even tho i never had it b4 it seems very rewarding and interesting for those who use my forum regularly)
vB Assistant
Last X Posts In Profile
Signature Stats hack

Hmm seems pretty long now but those are the main hacks that will get my upgrade to Vb3 back to normal so no one notices the disruption

however from 70 to 18 hacks isnt bad i guess :p

I think this is worth upgrading from a techy/admin point of view, but from a users point of view I'm deffinately going to wait for the Gold release.

Too many bugs have slipped past the private beta testers :(

I am going to wait for the hacks to be converted over.

I wonder if the vb3 has as many data base error troubles as the vb2 has been.

Well...

I won't be updating anytime soon. The reason I went with vBulletin to begin with is because I knew they had some of the best hacks/modifications around. :) I've taken the past few months installing nearly 80 different hacks. I see no features in vB3 that would make it worth my time to recode or even remove some of my current modifications, so I won't be updating.

Vb3 will make updating easier later on cuz it has a lot of hacks as standard now

ps i love the multiple attachment feature
wish it had a warnings system tho

upgrading indeed will be easier as they divided up a lot files :)
(functions for example)

but as during beta therre are a lot of hacks missing in it and other total useless features.
the vb.org upgrade won't be that fast ;)
