Disable Smilies from the User Control Panel
What does this hack do?
It allows users to choose whether or not they would like to view smilies in posts on your board. This is especially useful if certain people do not like your smilies, and/or wish to browse your board without smilies. This hack will convert the smilies back to the code that created the smilie.
How do I install this?
Simply read the instructions in the attached file!

Yes me! <hops up and down in excitement>
You may love smilies monstergamer (me too!) but a lot of people can't stand 'em and it ruins their reading experience if the little blighters are all over the place. If they could turn them off like avatars and sigs they would be ecstatic. Trust me on this. ;)
God I always feel I have to apologise to some people when I install more smilies. But no more. They are gonna love me for this. Woo and hoo!

I bow before your magnificence!
Worked like a charm on vb2.26 in both IE6 and NS6. :D
Has an unexpected side effect though: Guests now see the code only and not the smilies. Same thing happens with Invision board so it's obviously some quirk. It's not a problem.
My members are gonna be so happy with this, because they can use smilies now without the baleful glare of those who hate 'em making them feel guilty. This is so cool, thank you! <beams>

Upgrading from version 1.0 to 1.1
If you have this already installed, you can simply do the following modification:
Find the following in admin/functions.php:
if ($bbuserinfo['showsmilies'])
Replace it with:
if ($bbuserinfo['showsmilies'] or ($bbuserinfo['userid']==0))
All done!

That didn't work Gary. It put the smilies back for guest but it still showed them when I logged in and deselected them. Hmmm.

Would you be able to provide the details so admins can choose to make certain STYLE(S) to have smilies disabled? While the others are like normal? I say this because the board I admin has styles imitating past forums that we were on before we moved to vBulletin, and one of them didn't have smilies at all, and it looks ugly to see them there. Can you help with that? Thanks.
