at your monitor because your web site is so fast?
I have been optimizing my server, and things are so much faster than before. When I load up my forumhome page, I just grin like an idiot.
Ya gotta love server loads of 0 and pages that generate in a tenth of a second. Now, I just need to optimize my html and images.
Yes, I know I am babbling like an idiot.
I do that all the time ;)

What do you do all the time? "Babbling like an idiot" or "just grin like an idiot"? ;)
I just blink and my site is there.... its wonderful!

It's the same like what i feel afte i optimized vb.org's index.php :)

Sadly, I do not know how you feel. I have a cable connection, but since my sister is sucking up 99% of the bandwith, I am forced to surf with sub-56k speeds.

Yeah, same here. I optimized my server, with different scripts and configs, and I never go above a load of 1.0 even with 400 users online. :D

that won't help you much as the devs know exactly that vb2 isn't so wellcoded, thats why they optimized a lot in vb3 :p

@Boofo - Stefan's surname;)
@corsacrazy - Optimise your .php files, turn Gzip compression on, and remove unnecessary information from your database (i.e. post pruning etc);)

That actually would increase server load, but decrease bandwidth. :)

GZIP increases server load as it uses more of your CPU (server load calculates proportion of CPU being used, with 1.0 being 1 CPU used). The higher you set GZIP, the more the server load, so you should set it to 1, as any higher would increase the server load and provide only minimally more compression. It is used to save bandwidth, not server load.

I have it set to 1, so thats cool:)
Satan
With over 100 online for hours everyday now, I don't care about bandwidth, but server loads are rising, stupid GZIP ><
Anyway, we can still tell on Xenon for, for for for for, er, talkin about index.php :p

If 1.0 is 100% usage of one CPU, then how can normal servers spike into the hundreds? A bunch of stuff in a processing queue?

If 1.0 is 100% usage of one CPU, then how can normal servers spike into the hundreds? A bunch of stuff in a processing queue? Server load is not only percent of processor usage. The calculation is based on the number of processes running, the amount of memory used to run the processes, as well as the percent of processor usage.

From:
http://www.hostinghelp.com/web_hosting.cfm/server_load-q-5879.html
What is server load?
Server load can be thought of as a representation of how hard the server is working. Its calculation is based on the amount of processes the CPU has to deal with at any one point in time, the percentage of CPU power they take, and the amount of memory used to run the process. The optimal server load would be under 1.00. If the load is past 1.00 it means processes are being queued rather than being processed immediately. Busy servers are able to operate with server loads of 1 to 1.5 without noticeable delay but once server load passes 2.00 or reaches 3.00 a slowing of the server will be apparent.

Yea, but I do it because of illegal narcotics
Actually, with an average download of 4 megabits a second on this connection (only suppsoed to get three but who am I to complain) everything seems fast. 1 gig downloads take about 35 minutes give or take.
Now that is fast (yes I am in love with my connection, I know that people out their have T3s and such that blow away, but I love being over two and a half times faster down than a T1)

Sure, it's called getting a new hack after it's been released from beta, from vb.org after being up for far to long, and with far too little sleep... to install it properly :P
