View Full Version : Slow posting?

I'm just pointing something out here, and seeing if anyone else notices this:

It seems that the page loading times for most of the pages here at vB.org are relatively fast, but when I'm making a post, it seems to be extremely slow. It usually times out after 5 minutes or so of attempting to make the post, and so I have to hit the post button again.

Anyone else noticing the slowness when posting?

EDIT: Seems like this happens from time to time only, but strangely enough, it only occurs to me when making a post in certain threads only :paranoid:

It's a known issue here at vB.org - not sure why that is... probably server-related.

Alright, at least it's not just me.

Yes i noticed this in a few threads recently. The store hack to name one of them...

As for store hack the reason is the number of subscriptions that thread has. As soon as you click submit to send a reply, vb needs to send many mails to many people and it can be a bottleneck if number of subribers are too much or mail server is slow to respond. In extreme cases you (ie poster) may even experience timeout errors if the script can not finish the process in 30 seconds which is default timeout duration for PHP scripts.

I'm hoping that VB3 will break down this bottleneck with a wiser subscription mailing algorithm. I don't know how they handled it as we don't have the code yet but the concept of daily/weekly notifications gives me hint that notification mails are handled more wisely in VB3. I hope devs included the algorithm that will send even instant notifications in smaller pieces and in time when they are more than X in a crowded thread. Since vb.com also has highly participated threads (like new release announcement threads) I'm sure devs are aware of this issue anyway..

i hope we'll get vb3 soon, so i don't have to hack into that issue myself ;)

I get this sometimes, I just had one before. Best thing is to wait for it to finish because sometimes I end up stopping/starting and it just creates double or triple posts.

^^ Don't give me ideas;)

I used to think it was slow because of my connection speed, but now I don't get the problem:eek:

It's kinda freaky, usually happens to me in Forum Commenting. Can't just be one forum..

it happens on different forums, most of the time in hackthreads...

Been just Forum Commenting for me, hack threads rarely.
