View Full Version : An alternative to banning: Miserable Users
This hack is an alternative to banning a user. As the name suggests a user who
gets hit with this hack will become truly miserable while trying to access
your board.
So here is what really happens to a miserable user:
- There is a random 60-120 second delay each time they click on a link.
- 90% of times they have no search engine acccess.
- 75% of the times they get the server too busy error.
If they don't get the server too busy error:
- 50% of the times they may get a blank page
- 30% of the times they may get forwarded to the forum main page
- 20% of the time they may be able to see the page they asked for.
after doing all the math in actuality they have only a 5% chance of seeing the
page they clicked on. What kills them is the time they have to wait before
anything happens.
I actually once tracked a miserable user and watched him suffer for 2 whole
hours before he was able to make a simple post.
This hack is considered one of the most sadistic hacks on my board. :D
The hack allows you to make your user miserable via the admin CP. It also
allows you to search for all miserable users through the admin CP as well.
Also in showthread.php, it appends a red status that is only visibly to admins
and mods stating that a user is miserable.
Tables affected by this hack: user
Files affected by this hack: global.php, showthread.php, admin/user.php

I'm going to install this, because we have a few users who connect from a large number of different IP's so we can't ban them. It would be even better if we could set a level of how miserable we want the user. Like 1 for just the occasional error and short delays, or 10 for full-on misery.

Help... I tried to install this twice and I don't see anywhere in the Admin CP to implement it. I am running 2.2.8.
No errors.

Create a new ,php file in your forums directory and copy the following lines in there. Save the file, execute it one time and delete. ;)
<?php

require("./global.php");

Boofo

Shouldn't that be?

I thought numeric fields are not required to be quoted but you can still quote them if you want.
Boofo
03-16-2003, 06:09 PM
I don't think they are required but there are a lot of users who get db errors without them sometimes. So, it is usually better to just use them and avoid all of the "Why did I get this db error?" messages. ;)

No. The hack adds a new field to the user table to indicate whether a user is miserable or not. The default value for miserable is 0. When a user is made miserable a value of 1 is assigned to the miserable field. ;)

Is there a fix for this hack to work with the arcade hack. It seems that the $postbits .=getpostbit($post); is where the problem is in the showthread.php. A 'non miserable user' was reporting problems with the forum in a way that i would aspect if this member was a M-user. I've looked for other possibillities but after removing the hack the member had no problems. I wonder now how many other members of our forum had this problem but did'nt mention it.....
You probably had a typo while installing the hack. I have personally installed this on 3 different sites and have had to port the hack from 2.2.4 all the way to 2.2.9 and I never had any problems.
You can send me an Email or a PM if you need help with this. :)

That warning is because of the echo " "; statement in global.php. You can choose to remove that statement from global.php. The only reason why I did it is because I did not want for my web browser to time out when I force a long sleep. The echo statement prevents the timeout. ;)

I love this hack, but I also use the ban by warning hack. Currently when a user reaches a preset number of warning points, they're moved to the banned by warnings group. What I need is to be able set a usergroup as miserable or not, rather than an individual user.
Users aren't allowed to see the warnings list, so they don't know how many points equals a ban. How would I set it up so that if a user is in the banned group they are miserable, but if not they aren't. I may sometimes unban a user (by moving them out of the banned usergroup) at which time I'd need for them to not be miserable any longer (only while in the banned usergroup).
Anyone know how to put an option in the usergroup section of the admin cp where I could set a certain group as miserable or not, as oposed to an individual user? I'd like to have the option listed when a usergroup is created/edited, much like the group permissions are.
Thanks for any help..
Add this before the if($bbuserinfo[miserable] == 1) code in global.php
if($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == $banned_usergroupid) {
$bbuserinfo[miserable] = 1;
}
Where $banned_usergroupid is the usergroup number for your banned users.
It will make all the users who belong to that usergroup miserable as soon as they log into your site. ;)

Thanks for the quick response! This is what my global.php looks like now:
if($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == 8) {
$bbuserinfo[miserable] = 1;
}
if($bbuserinfo[miserable] == 1) {
$glitch = rand(60,120);
for($x = 0;$x < $glitch;$x++) {
echo " ";
sleep(1);
}
$floodchecktime *=10;
$glitch = rand(0,100);
if(glitch < 90) {
$enablesearches = 0;
}
$glitch = rand(0,100);
if($glitch < 75) {
eval("standarderror(\"".gettemplate('error_toobusy')."\");");
exit;
}
else {
$glitch = rand(0,100);
if ($glitch < 80) {
if ($glitch < 50) {
exit;
}
echo "<META HTTP-EQUIV=\"refresh\" CONTENT=\"5; URL=index.php\"> ";
}
}
$showforumusers = 0;
$displayloggedin = 0;
}
Just one more question though. If I later move a user out of the banned usergroup, will they automatically be not miserable or do need to add some sort of elseif statement to the usergroup part I just added that would setit to 0 rather than 1?
Very cool. ;)
You won't have to do anything since the misery flag gets set if the user belongs to the banned group. moving them back to the registered user group will not set that flag anymore.

That would be a good option. Would need to be a way of also setting it so that mods couldn't set other mods and/or admins to miserable though.. Only admins or those with admin cpanel access would be able to make mods/admins miserable.
Oh boy, I knew this was going to get me in trouble. :D
I have this hack in place on my site. But it combines 6 other hacks which gives the moderators the power to impose misery, starvation, and a couple other hacks on users for time periods of 1, 3, or 7 days. And after the "served time" the users go back to normal.
I need to think about how to do a partial release of what I have in place... :(

Possibly my favorite hack of all time even though I never see the direct results of it.. I dunno where that hack of the month competition is, but this should be it.
I've made it a more permanent form of removal on my site.. When you get "miserable'd", all of your posts are replaced by
[account removed]
except for when the miserable person actually gets to view it. So it effectively deletes all of their posts at the same time.

It is not a usergroup. It is a clickable option in the edit user screen. It is a property of a user that can be turned on of off. ;)

After using for a long while this hack, it's obvious that only people that try to log in with his banned nick will get the too busy, but 99% of them notice that when logged out they can navigate without problems (and registering a new account solves the problem too), so I was wondering which kind of message do you people use so they really think server is bugged out....
Recognizing people is a very hard thing to do. :(
I have implemented an unpublished IP trapping mechanism that works like the VBulletin IP ban, except that anyone, registered or guest, coming in on an IP in that list will have a miserable session. This will not work with dial up users because they are coming in on an IP pool and I have in some cases 200+ people sharing the same dialup IP in my IP records.
But this works finr with users who have limited IP's. I have also added the IP addresses of some big name anonymizers to my miserable IP list.

In the instructions it says to find:
while ($post=$DB_site->fetch_array($posts) and $counter++<$perpage) {
if ($postdone[$post[postid]]) {
$counter--;
continue;
} else {
$postdone[$post[postid]]=1;
}
$postbits .= getpostbit($post);
}
Instead of that, I have:
while ($post=$DB_site->fetch_array($posts) and $counter++<$perpage) {
if ($postdone[$post[postid]]) {
$counter--;
continue;
} else {
$postdone[$post[postid]]=1;
}
$post[postcount] = ++$postcount;
$post[totalposts] = $totalposts;
$postbits .= getpostbit($post);
}
Probably ebcause of another installed hack. Is there any way I can add the info to what I have already?

Zzed, I just installed this hack and I have to tell you, it's awesome! You have just reduced my stress level about 10000%. My offline family thanks you for that! :ogre:
Even though it works, I must have done something wrong though. I can get around it by making the change to the user "miserable" field directly in the database, but maybe you can tell me what I did wrong.
When I use the user.php page to click them "on" to miserable, and then update, the change doesn't actually save in the database. I get no error message. The database field "miserable" is not changed.
Everything else works fine however, when I update the field manually. Any thoughts?

Zzed,
I just have to asy thanks again for this hack. This is simply the most usefull hack I have on my board. Just to give a little background on how I am using it currently.
A few months back we had a group that split off and before doiing so had created multiple logins, to make it easier to get back in and cause trouble. Well we got those taken care of before this hack by banning them. Well a ban just added fuel to their fire. They would then use that as a badge or something with the other forum. Well since this hack has been added, they try to say they are banned, but we can honesly say they are not banned and that people can check in the members list to see for themselves.
I also know that they are not going to be offically supporting vb3 hacks on here at this time, which I can understand since it is in beta still. I just hope this is one hack that can make it to vb3 :)
wolfman,
That is a great story. :) And thank you very much for your kind words. http://www.ls1.com/.zed/hail.gif

The annoyance level of this hack I would have to put almost on the same level as those cardboard inserts in magazines. My first thought was that I wanted to choke you when I tested this hack for myself :) this one really does give the power back to the admin and mods of a forum as with a ban its to clear what has been done, this they do not know :dead:

Had to make a change though I have vbproarcade and I don't have this in showthread.php
while ($post=$DB_site->fetch_array($posts) and $counter++<$perpage) {
if ($postdone[$post[postid]]) {
$counter--;
continue;
} else {
$postdone[$post[postid]]=1;
}
$postbits .= getpostbit($post);
}
so I did some pluging and playing and got this code to work
while ($post=$DB_site->fetch_array($posts) and $counter++<$perpage) {
if ($postdone[$post[postid]]) {
$counter--;
continue;
} else {
$postdone[$post[postid]]=1;
}
$onlinestat = "";
if(($post[miserable] == 1) || ($post[stunned] & 4)){
if(($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == 5) or ($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == 6) or ($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == 7)) {
$onlinestat = "$onlinestat<br><font color=\"red\"><b>Miserable User</b></font>";
}
}
$post[posts]="$post[posts]$onlinestat";
Just left out the end part
$postbits .= getpostbit($post);
}
Im not sure why it works this way but it does so Woot :D

Change this: ALTER TABLE user ADD miserable smallint( 5 ) unsignedDEFAULT0 NOT NULL
To this: ALTER TABLE user ADD miserable smallint( 5 ) unsigned DEFAULT 0 NOT NULL
I added a space before and after DEFAULT. ;)

hey man since you wrote this hack, I wanted to know if you or someone could modify it so when they try to access your site, it loads a 2 frame page, the top frame saying "you are banned, while you are banned you are only able to see our sponsors websites, and you will not have access to our forums until your ban is up". And then it lets them pick from a drop down of sponsors which it would load in the bottom frame.. I think that would be a great addition to this hack :)

I'm not sure if anyone has suggested this yet, but...
it would be an even more useful hack if it would also (optionally) let you make certain IP-addresses be miserable, instead of users/usergroups.
Why? Suppose you have 2 members, who live in the same building. One of 'm is an ass, the other is fine. If you only block one user, they're likely to figure out that you made *some* sort of change to his/her account. If you block their ip address(es), they'll not know why and reckon it's an ISP/routing problem instead (because that's far more likely then). :)
Can be WAY more effective, that way ^_^

I have the IP based misery working in my forums. In fact I have applied it to most of the anonymizers and a few users. It is working like a charm. But I never did an Admin CP interface for it and I enter the information into an array of IP addresses in the php source.
I am not sure if this would interest anyone. I suppose I can make an Admin CP interface for it as well. :)

After playing around a bit, I installed this in VB3... it wasn't a full hack though. I just added the miserable code to global.php and then added the miserable column to the user table.
To make it work you have to run the query manually for each user that you want as miserable.
Here's my implementation:
Open miserable.txt and run the query
Apply the first modification to global.php ONLY and upload it
For each username you want miserable, run this query
update user SET miserable="1" WHERE username="xxx";
replace xxx with username
Not the cleanest hack in the world but we were desperate for it, :P
KuraFire
11-03-2003, 07:42 AM
djnoz, it can be done a lot easier than that on vB3 :)
For this to be applied on a vB3 board, you really should just make a new (secondary) usergroup called "Miserable Users", make it non-public and put people in that group (along with their normal group, ie. the Miserable usergroup has no additional permissions anywhere, it's just important to note the usergroupid). Then in global.php, put the Miserable code and make it dependant on the usergroupid of the Miserable usergroup, check for it in $bbuserinfo[usergroups] (iirc)

I simply changed the first line of the global.php addition to:

I used membergroupid because I kept the users main usergroup as 'registered', so the new miserable group is in his membergroupids record. If that makes sense!

Well most hosts which provide servers will have a MYSQL admin pannel. In there you you will have a section to run a queries against the DB. If you dont have that a good tool to have installed is Webmin. It will allow you to do other cool things along with what you need for the DB queries.

Miserable Users for vB3 - NO FILE EDITS NECESSARY!
This vB3-version works with a new usergroup of your choice. Make a new usergroup, call it Miserable People or whatever you want, and note what usergroup id it is.
Next, put this code in your phpinclude_start template in vB3. Make sure to edit the $miserableid variable (at the start) and change it to the usergroupid of your Miserable People usergroup.
// Miserable Hack for vB3
// Ported by KuraFire to vB3, original vB2 version by Zzed
// ################################################## #####
// Put the id of your Miserable Usergroup here:
$miserableid = 22;
if (strpos($bbuserinfo['membergroupids'], ','))
{
$ids = explode(',', $bbuserinfo['membergroupids']);
}
else
{
$ids = array($bbuserinfo['membergroupids']);
}
if(in_array($miserableid, $ids) OR $bbuserinfo['usergroupid'] == $miserableid)
{
$glitch = rand(60, 120);
for($x=0; $x<$glitch; $x++)
{
echo ' ';
sleep(1);
}
$vboptions['floodchecktime'] *= 10;
$glitch = rand(0, 100);
if($glitch < 90)
{
$vboptions['enablesearches'] = 0;
}
$glitch = rand(0, 100);
if ($glitch < 80)
{
if ($glitch < 50)
{
exit;
}
$templatecache['headinclude'] = '<META HTTP-EQUIV=\"refresh\" CONTENT=\"5; URL=/index.php\" />' . $templatecache['headinclude'];
}
}
unset($ids, $glitch, $miserableid);
Save your phpinclude_start template. Assign people you want to suffer to the new usergroup. You can just make it their Secondary usergroup (along with any others you want), you can also make it their Primary (not recommended).
Enjoy :)

This is especially good for users that can't be IP banned... and keep coming back under different names. If you do this... they won't realize what is happening and just get sick of your site... instead of trying to come back as other user names from other IPs.

Our programmer installed the 'miserable user' hack today in our vB 2.3.3 and forgot to tell me how to implement it before leaving on holidays for a few weeks.
Can anyone tell me how to make someone 'miserable' now that I have the tool?
Thanks.

Couldn't find a 'radio' button. Do I have to add a new group somewhere?
