Before I crack - how can I relayout my forum page?

My forum pages right now are one table, ( http://www.scatpack.com/forums what Id like to do is adapt it to look similar to what http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/ looks which is a tall vertical "skyscrapper" column on the left side.

How do I go about doing this? I don't want to screw everything up in the process. Is this a hack or a prebuilt template?
