I feel the need to write bots. Ideas?

Already done: HelperBot (replies with seemingly relevant thread links)
Can't easily be done: GoogleSearchBot (replies with Google hits)

BTW you can see HelperBot at http://www.webdesignforums.net/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=719 .

Transformerbot - make your computer transform into a robot that fights evil Decepticons.

Voltronbot - make 5 cat robots join together to form one big robot.

R2D2bot - make a trashcan beep

Terminatorbot - make a bot that kills other bots while saying "Hastalavista... botty"

Ran out of ideas... well, start coding!!! ;)

Okay seriously...

Censorbot - a bot that detects censored words, and makes a post warning the poster after the offending post.

Congratulatorybot - a bot that makes a posts after the post of a member when the member has made 1000 posts (or something like that).

Flamingbot - a bot that detects flaming (by looking at certain keywords like "you idiot" or "you are stupid" and makes a post in that thread to ask people to calm down.

That's it for now... :)

Good ideas except 2 IMO because it encourages excessive posting.

Somebody would have to come up with a list of insults for #3 though because I only know so many ways to trash somebody :p

my idea in my eyes owns all others

pinky and the brain bot

you say something

brain says somethin
then pinky
or vice versa

example

you: I need to go on a vacation
brain: pinky are you thinking what I am thinking
pinky: I think so brain, but if you cooked sushi then wouldnt it be coochie

bad joke but get the idea

(note: after that joke, you probably woudlnt want me to write pinky or brains ai...)

The intent is a useful bot, not a chatterbot...

What about more ideas:

Dictionarybot - a member puts in a word, the bot gives out a definition

Spellingbot - similar to above

Thesaurusbot - similar to above

Triviabot - ask a question about anything, and the bot answers out of an encyclopedia database

SearchEngineBot - ask a question, and the bot searches Google and posts a URL or a list of URLs.

GOSSIPBOT - Knows all the members on your board and combines two in a gossip that will shake the whole community.

LOVEBOT - Knows all the members and knows the difference between the genders. Combines them random and displays a comprehensive statusrapport about their relationship on your board.

CALENDARBOT - Knows all the calendar additions and put the actual note in a "Don't forget" reply.

QUOTEBOT - Displays random quotes

JUKEBOT - Can play music if you type the name of a band. Goes with the flash swf streaming method (tested and it works)

How about a WelcomeBot, which will post a welcome message in a specified forum each time a new member registers, and then send a PM telling the member a link to their Welcome Thread.

And in the thread it would include some of the register info so other users can start replying to him and stuff.

And stuff. Erwin's idea of CongratulateBot is also quite good, could work when reaching a post count, birthday, etc.

1. Can't reliably be done (that I know of)
2. Ditto
3. Ditto
4. Can be done, might do if I have the time
5. Can't be done without Java support in PHP (which isn't there by default) or reliably the other way.

Well, there's always hope ;)

Ii probably would require too much queries anyway :(

Not necessarily, it should be very similar to, of all things, HelperBot and how he works.

I have made something similar to a combination of censorbot/flamingbot.

Threads that lock themselves (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37363) ;)

Hey Filburt, I have a script that combines the API capabilities of php with Google, in the script you can search a keyword, and it brings up 10 results from google. I think this can be easily incorporated into one of your bots :) If you want, I can find the script and put up a demo.

I also don't think Googlebot would be a good idea, mainly because it would teach people to just search on Google and ignore the forums altogether.

You mean teach people to post on the forum, and ignore actually going to the search engine itself?

Dean C

filburt - it always depends on the content of your forum ;)

How about a Quizbot?

It would be an add-on feature to an integrated IRC chatroom - the bot 'resides' in there, and poses questions which the chatroom participants then try to defeat each other in answering the fastest.

There could be a temporary leaderboard for the current round of trivia, and a permanent one (which could be reset on a regular basis if desired) to show overall rank.

This is an idea a friend of mine came up with but never actioned as his career keeps him too busy to devote time to such a project. :(

There already are such irc scripts - if you have the intigration then it's nothing vb-bot related too :)
