As many of you seen, theres some places that uses images to verify stuff like creating a new account and so on, like at pay pal.

I like the idea, a way to prevent automated sign up's, so I decided to write a script and intergrate it with vBulletin and add image verification to account sign ups.

So far you can choose the amount of digits you want it to show and the output of the final image, such as a png or a jpeg. It uses a table on mysql to store the data, when some one goes to register it creates a table to store the hash, the ip, the value thats shown on the image and the time. All the user see's in the hash for example:

also I have it so after 30 minutes the data gets removed in case they decide ot to sign up or idle, if they idle and return after 30 minutes and refresh the page, the data for the sign up changes.

There will be two image types you can choose from:
1. Each letter(capital and lowercase) and number are seperate images and the script that generates the main image adds them together as one image, this is currently done and is shown in the attachment below.

2. Supply just a background image and then the text will be written over the center of it.

Also im adding support to "distort" the image like adding lines and so on over the top of it.

Im gonna rellease it as soon as i get better images for it, right now the ones shown in the attachment above is for testing, so if any one who wants to help make some simple graphics please pm me.

Currently it uses the GD library to create the images but im also adding a way to use the image verification without it for those who dont have it or dont wanna use it.

Are people registering as members of vB forums using automatic methods?

So far no one has tried on my forums but those with knolegde with php or sother scripting languages could create a script to create multiple accounts and then have it check the email and search it for the link and then activate the account, i create a test php script like that to test this and it prevents it.

On another note, the hack is almost complete, i finished the installer script. The script automaticly creates the templates, the setting group, the setting and the table needed to store the data.
Im also gonna include a text file with what to do incase you dont wanna use the installer, but I made it esier for you with the installer, it adds the setting group and makes it displayid one after the last, so if the last one is 30, the new setting group will be 31, also when you reinstall ir deletes all the old settings, templates, tables and so o and replaces them with new ones.

Ill post a screen shot of the current admin options.

I'm gonna be releasing the multiple attachment hack after this hack, I put it on hold for the moment because a friend of mine requested this.

Suggestion: For the options you do not want the users to be able to edit, set the display order to 0. vBulletin does this with the version number. ;)

I wanna keep them editable, incase your forum is using another language other then english characters or add extra characters to them, those options allow you to edit which folder the char image will be located in.

Also, an idea, should I add "dictionary" support, what i mean by that is instead of making a random character image, you can choose to have it create images with random word from a list you give it.

Ok heres a beta release of the installer, This isnt the release of the hack.

The installer if almost done, it install the settings, setting group, and the verify table and also gives you the template edits, it doesnt contain the file edits, when i officialy release the hack, it will contain the needed file edits.

I'm releasing it now for testing purposes. Do Not Install it on a working, public board, install it on a test forum and tell me how it works.

After trying it out on a test forum, tell me if there should be any changes, edits, errors, comments or any thing like that.

Also im 99% sure that there will be future changes to the code and how the installer looks, so as I said, only run it on a test forum.

To use it, upload it to your test forum's admin folder and then pint your browser to it and follow the onscreen links.

Also in the final release there will be a text install file for those who dont want to use the installer.

vB 2.3.0 already includes this feature now, although it is not as advanced.
