Quoted from the first post:
The script uses Apache's ForceType directive. Most of Apache servers have it installed by default.
Check with your host to make sure the module is installed.
If you use another server then Apache, the script will NOT work.

does anyone have any ideas why this will not work on apache2 ??

I know apache is reading and processing the .htaccess file because i've put in options like indexes with fancyindexing and that works.

I keep getting an error that indicates the url was not found on the server and the apache error says "/usr/local/mysite.com/upload/archive/" does not exist?

I've just spent two hours and it won;t work. It works on my 1.3.27 apache server just fine.

just as a test I added archive to the mime types associated with php in my httpd.conf file and removed the 301 redirect from the .htaccess and that work. I can also change the redirect and point to my apache1.3.27 server and that server displays the archive page ...but the apache2 server will not serve the page

out of ideas....

do you have any?

TECK

It's working fine on my localhost with the latest Apache version.
Make sure you configure your conf file properly.

well. I check my 1.3.27 conf file line for line to my 2.0 cnf file and there are no differences that would could be attributable to the problem. Would you om or email me a copy of your conf file?

well...after 4 hours of testing I can confidently say that this hack does not work properly under Apache2 running on Linux.

and that's a shame because this is a great hack.

I compiled apache 1.3 and put it on the same server as apache2.0 and made the httpd.conf file exactly the same (with a few minor exceptions required by apache2.0 and when I fire up apache1.3 on the server this hack works. when I fire up apache2 it does not.

oh well...

it's a shame google and msn spidered thousands of my pages and they all now lead to broken links.

If you got it working on apache2 running under RH Linux, I'd like to hear from you and what you did to get it to work.

I've installed the archive addon version of this hack for the vbhome (lite) (I'm running VB Home Lite 4.2), I used the archive download from TECKs forums, and I have followed the installation file that was in the zip file to the letter...

I've also done the install 3 times, yet I'm constantly having the same problem. I have not edited any of the templates because I've read here that you dont need to, and if you do it will mess up the whole thing.

But I'm having problems.

Here is the URL to the archive:

http://theborg.cjb.net/archive/

My site runs from the root, with the forums in /forum etc

but the archive background is white when it should be the same colours as the rest of the site, it has a gross white 'bar' along the top right hand side of the screen, and its missing the navigational buttons, of and the links to the archived forums say this when clicked on:
'No forum specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster'

Does anyone have any ideas?

I've attached a small screenshot section of the page so you can look at that, if you dont want to click on the link above.

Thanks

Andy

TECK, excellent hack. Installed with ease.

Quick question: Just curious, will an automatic redirect from my host, from the root index page (www.mydomain.com/index.html) to (www.mydomain.com/forum) cause problems?

According to your read me, I need to add the link (www.mydomain.com/forum/archive) on the main root index page. Due to the redicrect, if I add this link to either the header/footer of the forum index, will everything be peachy?

I assume I still need to add the robots.txt file to the root index page, or should I also include it in www.mydomain.com/forum due to the auto-redirect?

Just checking, and thanks for work on this!

Apache's ForceType is running on my server.

Apache/1.3.26
PHP/4.3.0

All I get is the following:

http://dr1.com/forums/archive

I also uploaded an archive.txt file and re-named it to archive.php
For some reason it only shows a few of my forums. http://dr1.com/forums/archive.php

I know it must be something stupid, just don't know what?

Dont worry, got it to work :)
Needed the point in front of the htaccess and some of my forums needed to be sub-forums. Thanks for a great hack!!!!!!

Earlier in this thread, TECK mentioned that this exact same scenario is completely normal and not to panic. Apparently if I remember correctly, he said that the preliminary searches show up on google initially, and then when they are processed for a "deep search" and included in their database you may see the listings temporarily removed.

That's the gist of what I read earlier in this thread.

In other words, chill, don't panic. All will be normal soon.

Hey TECK, no problem. :)

Did anyone get a chance to see my question regarding using a host's auto redirect from the root index page to /forum path? (it's about 3 posts up).

It's beyond the realm of this particular hack's info, but if anyone knows if changes need to be made for search engines when you redirect the root index page, to the /forum page, I'd like to know that info, thanks.

I figure I'll just create a dummy index file (with the archive link) on the root index page (which should be never seen due to the host's auto-redirect), and add robots.txt to /forum path, and the archive link to my main forums page and I should have my bases covered. But just wanted to be sure.

Thanks again TECK for the excellent hack.

Trust me, you will be very happy soon. They do this all the time, they drop it for few days, but the links show up rightaway after...
Look at vBulletin.org archive results:

If you guys have more info related to this issue, please post it here so we all find out about it.

I will post it also in the first post so other users will read it to.

The vbLite version of this is simple and works VERY well. No issues at all, I think install took 30 seconds.

Killer!

EDIT only one issue (see below post)

what's the best way to turn off certain private forums from being viewed altogether regardless of usergroup permissions ?

I REALLY need to know this one. I searched this thread and Teks board and cant find an answer. Can anyone help? I am using the vbLite version, and simply want to make it so that a few of my password protected forums are not showing up in the archive.

As it is now, they are listed and can be viewed by guests or members.

If you can help, it would really save me here. Thanks!

A little note, this was tested on normal URL's:
http://www.yoursite.com/forum

If you use an URL like:
http://forum.yoursite.com/
you will have to hack yourself the files, since I don't provide support for the script.
If you want a working version no matter how it is the forum URL, then use vbHome (lite) (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36756) and it's Archive Add-On.

It worked fine on my vb 2.2.9 forums without editing the scripts, and my forum is in the format http://forums.mysite.com/

[B]Here it is another interesting mod I made to my forums, to link back to archives.
This will help because the crawlers will see the friendly URL's easier.
Basically the mod links every forum/thread to the archive.
To test it, mouse over each forum or thread icon, while viewing my forums (http://www.teckwizards.com/forum/).
Also, check the link I added under the thread title, while viewing the actual (not archived) thread.

TEMPLATE: forumhome_forumbit_level2_post

Also, in the user agent checking, where do you put this code:

Is there a reason why the archives don't contain a LOGO and the regular forum links like "home, control panel, register, etc" as a navigation? Does that disrupt the spider/search engine when it's caching pages?

How can i deleate a folder with a httaccess in it because cuteftp doesnot show httaccess files ?

well you have to go in to your cp or just upload the new one old will get replaced
if you want to delete all data then just upload empty htacess file to where you want to delete the htacess file
hack works like a bot charm see it working here

I went through directions but something confused me. ------

1. I changed htaccess.txt to .htaccess , but the file went away?
2. I didn't have the directory /admin/forum folder) to perform the code change in template.php ?

thanks

Imjust installed the vBarchive hack https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47667&perpage=15&highlight=archive&display=&pagenumber=1

And it workd great:
http://www.authorzone.com/forums/archive/

BUT I need help with it.

My website runs on php/mysql and is HEAVILY intergrated with vB 2.2.8

I need to be able to make the archive hack index the rest of the site's content.

All the content on http://www.authorzone.com
submitted by users is stored in the same db as vB except for the images.

How can I get the vBarchive to index the rest of the content?

Thank you much!

My host just installed phpsuexec (whatever that is) on 6/30/2003. I just noticed my archive is no longer functioning. (tigerforums.com/archive)

Would installing phpsuexec have anything to do with my archive not functioning? I'm assuming thats what caused it. Is there anything that can be done to fix it?

Thanks.

Hi,
I got the problem that a 404-error comes up when goint to the /archive file.
I asked my Provider to check the force directive of Apache and they mentioned I have to change my .htaccess file as follows and now it works.

I had to replace:
<files archive>
ForceType application/x-httpd-php
</files>

<files forumdisplay>
ForceType application/x-httpd-php
</files>

<files showthread>
ForceType application/x-httpd-php
</files>

with:
<files archive>
ForceType x-mapp-php4
</files>

<files forumdisplay>
ForceType x-mapp-php4
</files>

<files showthread>
ForceType x-mapp-php4
</files>

It's just a hint for other persons which has the same problem as me.

Now it work fine ;) Thank you for this great hack !

I've installed this hack, but I have some problems and questions about fine tuning it after I get the problems fixed.

Problems:
1. My icons aren'tshowing up. I followed the instructions and tried both ways of putting just { imagesfolder } (without the spaces) and it didn't work either way. The dead image url appears as this:

http://www.theforumz.com/forumz/showthread/images/icons/icon24.gif

and the one on the full thread appears as:

http://www.theforumz.com/forumz/images/icons/icon24.gif

What do I need to change the image path too? It kinda looks like I need to change it to ../{ imagesfolder } (without the spaces). Is that correct?

2. How do I get the correct colors for my threads? (http://www.theforumz.com/forumz/showthread/t-56716.html)

As you can see, each posts background color is incorrect. How do I change the blue in each posts background to the darker gray I'm using on my website?

Fine Tune:

1. Where can I find the code for the "Click HERE for Original Thread" line? I want to make the entire line clickable and a bright red font.

2. How do I go about adding my banner code to the top and bottom of the archived threads? I want to use this archive version also as a 56k friendly version, but I need my banners to be displayed. (Where do I go about inserting my code?)

3. Some of the smaller fonts appear too small (http://www.theforumz.com/forumz/forumdisplay/f-3.html) How do I go about getting them bigger? I've had this problem before in multiple hacks before.

Can somebody please help me with these questions? I really want to get this hack working.

Thanks a bunch for any help you can provide me with.

Great work on a wonderful hack. I have added it at my forums (nearly 500,000 posts, over 9000 members).

http://www.alleria.com/forums/archive

However, after 24 hours have passed, when I search google using site:alleria.com archive - I still get only three results from older pages that had used the word "archive". Any thoughts on why this might be?

Ok, the hack works wonders.

BUT, I have a problem and need HEEEEEEEEEELP? :(

My site is ALL dependent on php and the vB database.

BUT, the archive hack does not index the rest of my site.

For example, all of these urls act the same as the vB forum with respect to content/threads:
http://authorzone.com/view_authors.php?s=
http://authorzone.com/view_books.php?s=
http://authorzone.com/view_stories.php?s=
http://authorzone.com/view_articles.php?s=
http://www.authorzone.com/view_poetry.php?s=
http://www.authorzone.com/view_news.php?s=
http://www.authorzone.com/view_events.php?s=
http://www.authorzone.com/view_reviews.php?s=
http://www.authorzone.com/view_pressreleases.php?s=

I need all of these archived as well.

Help please?

Max - that's quite a hack. It'd be very difficult to code without having full access to your database structures. The vbArchive hack is only suited to the vB database structure.

So you're out of luck.

Will somebody please help me with my archive? It's having troubles. I have 2 problems and 2 fixes I need.

Problem 1. (Example: http://www.theforumz.com/forumz/showthread/t-58064.html) The background of each post is appearing as the wrong color. Is there a way I can change it in the archive file?

Problem 2. (Example: http://www.theforumz.com/forumz/showthread/t-58064.html (same url as the one above)) Icons/smilies aren't showing. How do I get them to work?

Fix 1. (Example: http://www.theforumz.com/forumz/forumdisplay/f-3.html) On the forum pages where it shows the date, time and how many replies, the text is super small. I've had this problem before in other hacks and it's some setting I have that causes the smallfont to not work properly. Can somebody help me locate where it's getting the smallfont so that I can change it to font size=1?

Fix2. I don't want my members using the archives and not being submitted to banner views (They keep the site running). Can somebody help me on how I can add a header and footer to all pages within the archive? Whether they are seperate files like header.htm and footer.htm or if I have to manually insert the banner code into one of the archive files, that would be better than nothing.

Can somebody please help me with these 4 simple things? I really want to use this hack, but with these problems I can't. :(

Yeah, My server went down because we were hosting some Quake 4 images. :D appearantly people wanted to see em. :)

I kinda wanted the smilies. I was hoping to use the archive like a 56k friendly version of my site. That's why I wanted to add a small header and footer too if it were at all possible. If it's possible at all to get smilies working that would be really cool. I just want it so that they don't show the red Xs. So if it's not possible to get them to work, then I would at the very least like to get it to just show the text and not the redXs.

Does any of that sound possible?

All I get when I go to my archive directory is a 404 Not Found :ermm:

See here: http://www.zerogain.com/forum/archive/

My server uses Apache and the mod_mime module (containing ForceType) is installed. Any ideas??

Don't know if it's relevant but my host has something in the FAQ that goes like this:

By default .php files are parsed as php4 on Oneandone Servers.

However there are still a lot of .php3 scripts out there, as standard these will not work. What you need to do is either create a new .htaccess file or edit an existing one.

Please create a .htaccess file in your main directory containing the following:

Create a .htaccess file in your main directory containing the following:

.htaccess

AddType x-mapp-php4 .php3

Upload this file into this file into the root of your domain

The changes take effect immediatly.

I've tried changing the ForceType directives to use x-mapp-php4 instead of x-httpd-php but that didn't make any difference. I also tried having an the vBarchive .htaccess file in my root - no joy :(

Are there any indexers that don't require ForceType?

Michael.

However, when I go to click on #3 addon, it comes up with this error :

George, you have 2 choices. Either add your forum info onto the robots.txt file (easiest way):
Disallow: /forum/forumdisplay/f-32.html
Or change this onto your forumdisplay.txt (or archive.txt) file:
if ( $forumperms['canview'] )
{To: if ( $forumperms['canview'] and !in_array( $forum['forumid'] , array( 15 , 23 , 48 ) ) )
{EDIT: what's the archive URL? so I add it in the first post...

This will not work for me.. (forumdisplay) method.. and I cannot find robots.txt

Now here's a weird FYI for you all.

I using VB 2.9 and have NOT installed this hack yet, but was planning to. I am running on a Windows 2000 Server with IIS. And today I was searching for something else on Google and a match was returned from my site...

and Google sent me to the dynamic URL!!!

So, I dunno if this is because of the MS Server or something that Google has changed, but basically I no longer need to do this because my whole site has already been indexed by Google.

Cool! :D

The fix for online.php file, to display nice links, is below.
There are 2 methods, the easy or the hard way. :)

METHOD 1 (easy)
FIND:
$loc=preg_replace("/\?s=[a-z0-9]{32}(&)?/","?",$loc);
REPLACE WITH:
$loc=preg_replace("/\?s=[a-z0-9]{32}(&)?/","?",$loc);
$loc = preg_replace( '~archive/~' , 'forumdisplay.php?forumid=' , $loc );
$loc = preg_replace( '~forumdisplay/f-~' , 'forumdisplay.php?forumid=' , $loc );
$loc = preg_replace( '~showthread/t-~' , 'showthread.php?threadid=' , $loc );
$loc = preg_replace( '~-p-[0-9]~' , '' , $loc );
$loc = preg_replace( '~.html~' , '' , $loc );
METHOD 2 (cool way)
FIND:
case 'spider':
$userinfo[where] = "Search Engine Spider";
break;
REPLACE WITH:
case 'spider':
$userinfo[where] = "Search Engine Spider";
break;
case 'archive':
$userinfo[where] = "$bbtitle <b>Archive</b> <a href='archive/'>Main Index</a>";
break;
case 'archiveforumdisplay':
if (!$forum[forumid][$userinfo[forumid]] or (!$forum[canview][$userinfo[forumid]] and $hideprivateforums)) {
$userinfo[where] = "Viewing <b>Archive</b> Forum";
} else {
$userinfo[where] = "Viewing <b>Archive</b> Forum <a href='forumdisplay/f-$userinfo[forumid].html'>".$forum[forumid][$userinfo[forumid]]."</a>";
}
break;
case 'archiveshowthread':
if (!$thread[title][$userinfo[threadid]] or !$forum[canview][$thread[forumid][$userinfo[threadid]]] or (!$forum[canviewothers][$thread[forumid][$userinfo[threadid]]] and $thread[postuserid][$userinfo[threadid]] != $bbuserinfo[userid])) {
$userinfo[where] = "Viewing <b>Archive</b> Thread";
} else {
$userinfo[where] = "Viewing <b>Archive</b> Thread <a href='showthread/t-$userinfo[threadid].html'>".$thread[title][$userinfo[threadid]]."</a>";
}
break;
FIND:
$loc=preg_replace("/\?s=[a-z0-9]{32}(&)?/","?",$loc);
REPLACE WITH:
$loc=preg_replace("/\?s=[a-z0-9]{32}(&)?/","?",$loc);
$loc = preg_replace( '~archive/~' , 'archive.php' , $loc );
$loc = preg_replace( '~forumdisplay/f-~' , 'archiveforumdisplay.php?forumid=' , $loc );
$loc = preg_replace( '~showthread/t-~' , 'archiveshowthread.php?threadid=' , $loc );
$loc = preg_replace( '~-p-[0-9]~' , '' , $loc );
$loc = preg_replace( '~.html~' , '' , $loc );
FIND:
case '/robots.txt':
$userinfo[activity] = 'spider';
break;
REPLACE WITH:
case '/robots.txt':
$userinfo[activity] = 'spider';
break;
case 'archive.php':
$userinfo[activity] = 'archive';
break;
case 'archiveforumdisplay.php':
$blowup = explode('=', $token1);
$forumid = intval($blowup[1]);
$forumids .= ",$forumid";
$userinfo[activity] = 'archiveforumdisplay';
$userinfo[forumid] = $forumid;

case 'archiveshowthread.php':

I'm on my 5th time trying to install this hack!

I've read the instructions about the {imagesfolder} replacement variable and I can't find it in the replacements.php file.

What am I doing wrong?

Do I have a 50% chance of using $bburl/{imagesfolder} or {imagesfolder}

Also, if the install doesn't work, do I have to erase everything and start over?

Floris
08-12-2003, 01:32 AM
This is simpler then you think :)

He did not mean to modify a file.
He meant:

Goto the admin control panel,
browse from the left menu down to the 'replacement' section
and click on 'modify' to find the {imagesfolder} replacement

Then, if you see it there and it says forum/images (or dir/imagesdir) then you dont have to modify the file
but if it says http://www.yourforumsite.com/forum/images/) (a full URL) then you have to modify the file.

in 99% you dont have to modify anything

Megadeuce
08-12-2003, 01:42 AM
When I expand the list under default, it just says

{imagesfolder} [change original]

I don't have to modify the file right?

Also if this doesn't work, what is my next step. Ive installed a few times and my urls still look the same.

If I mess up on one step, does it mess up the forum permanently or can I just pick up from step 2, 3 or 4?

I have been using this hack for about 5-6 months. All I can say is this baby is awesome. Kudos to Teck!

Now, a question / request.

How hard would it be to set the hack up so that no matter what link / thread / thread title someone clicks on within the search hack, they are taken to a pre-designated page?

I want to tweak this hack's potential for driving traffic to my home page only.

I look forward to your reply.

Thanks!

I was wondering if there was a way to redirect the user to the php pages from the html page? I think I am losing members because if there are no posts in the forum, then there is no way for them to click the link to see the original post. Currently, I'm going into each forum and putting a thread in with the link to the php page.

As TECK explains, it can take months.

Uploading your archive URL to various sites is the first step. Then, you'll have to keep an eye out in the online users for the search engine spiders to hit your site. Even then, it can still take months before you are actaully published on their search engines. It really depends on the search engine, etc.

I submitted my site in early July, and it is not on any major search engines yet.

Bottom line is, we have to be patient for this to work. :)

Hope this info helps.

Having problems with step 3 here...

STEP 3
Once you uploaded all files onto your server, you need to rename the following files:
- archive.txt to archive
- forumdisplay.txt to forumdisplay
- htaccess.txt to .htaccess
- showthread.txt to showthread

IMPORTANT
Do NOT rename the files locally then upload them! You must proceed with the files rename ONLY onto your server.

What do I rename those file extensions to? .php, .html, .htm or what? They have to have some sort of file extension and if I rename them to .php they will overwrite the existing vB ones. Also I can not name a file to .htaccess because it has to have some sort of a file extension as well. Can you help me with this step, Im a little confused.

Thanks
Chris

Thanks for the help man, but when you try to rename htaccess to .htaccess it wont allow you to because of the period in front of it it thinks that you are trying to rename the file with a .htaccess extension and no file name so it wont allow you to have the . infront of it. Any solution to this?

EVO VIII Chris
09-03-2003, 02:30 PM
you cant just rename the file to archive though otherwise when you go to www.yoursite.com/Forums/archive it wont bring up anything except for your archive file showing all the code and everything. I think I am very lost here. I have this whole thing figured out except for renaming these files. It you dont have any extension on the file it will be useless.

The script uses Apache's ForceType directive. Most of Apache servers have it installed by default

I know I am using apache 1.3.28 and I am not sure if it has this installed by default? If anyone has any time could they explain to me what force type does? I couldnt find anything about it even on Apaches site.

Ok nevermind I got the .htaccess to work with my FTP and it let me rename it to .htaccess Anyways check out my site now at www.vorspann.net/Forums/archive and take a look. It will simply show you the archive.php file in text. Does anyone know whats going on here. I think possibly I may have my Apache set up wrong. All my other pages work but this one doesnt and I am just guessing but when I look at the .htaccess file I notice that it redirects you when you go to the archive page by using the $archive variable. My guess would be it is not doing this becauser perhaps I have not set up Apache to read my .htaccess file in the directory it is in? Does that sound right to anyone? I am still not sure though because my Apache httpd.conf file says this...

AccessFileName .htaccess

# The following lines prevent .htaccess files from being viewed by

Just rename it "remotely" using an FTP client. Most FTP clients will let you right-click (or control-click on the Mac) to bring down an option for "rename".

You will NEED to have the period in front of the file name. This is crucial.

HA I got it! I had this line in Apache wrong...

# This controls which options the .htaccess files in directories can
# override. Can also be "All", or any combination of "Options", "FileInfo",
# "AuthConfig", and "Limit"
#
AllowOverride None

I had to change it to AllowOverride All. Is that safe to have it override all by the way? Now I just have to figure out where I change this...

Before you run the vbarchive.php script installer, you must make sure how the {imagesfolder} replacement variable is set.
If you have it set to the full URL, you will need to edit the script installer and replace any:
$bburl/{imagesfolder} with {imagesfolder}.

Does anyone know what all templats or folders that is in cause my main image is not showing up because of this

Interestingly enough, during my upgrade to v2.3.2, I lost many of the templates; I had to re-install them manually, and everything worked again. *shrug* Not sure if anyone else had this problem.

Is explained in the readme file... simply run again the installer, no need to install them manually. The modified templates will not be overwritten, so you don't lose any mods.

I've had five sessions of spider visits today for a total of 92 spiders. This hack is the best.

Why is it that I have this hack installed and the archive works great and all however it did not make my current posts and links in my forum to be search engine index-able. For example the links still look like this... http://www.vorspann.net/Forums/showthread.php?threadid=16

Dont try clicking on that right now as my DNS server is down and I am in the process of fixing it.

Thanks
Chris

My online.php is still full of 20 unknown locations:

Teck, simple answer as to what is causing it woyuld be helpful. Do you advise rehacking somewhere or reinstalling templates? It makes no sense as to why it is happening. :(
