View Full Version : Better IP Trace Hack... Easy install

This hack is a better version of a hack created by drkFusion. This one does not add any queries and uses a third party site to do the tracing for you. Everything is done through the whosonline. Im not a huge php coder so if anyone would like to add onto this my feelings will not be hurt.
As per request... it has been added to a txt file to be dled. Enjoy :nervous: I have also added the hack that was later added in this thread adding this hack to posts.

Edit: For some god awful reason you cannot download the txt file by clicking it, but you can right click and click save target as... not sure why. Maybe just me.

I assume this function can be used by anyone with permission to view IP's?

And this can be done for anyone anywhere in the world?

I just installed it on my forums Hellsatan and was able to trace people over in England so I would assume so.

Modify your usergroup settings and turn it off for everyone except usergroup 6. :)

I eidted this a bit to make it also work within threads when you click the "IP: Logged" link.
Open the template threads_displayip
Replace the entire contents of that template with:The IP Address is: $postinfo[ipaddress]. The host name is: $postinfo[hostaddress]. If you would like more information on this IP Address click <a href="http://www.networldmap.com/TryIt.htm?GetLocation&Template=demo.htm&ipaddress=$postinfo[ipaddress]" target="_blank">here</a>. Or, click <a href="showthread.php?s=$session[sessionhash]&threadid=$threadid">here</a> to return to the thread.

Awesome hack, defiantly will help with analyzing re-registered banned members, etc.
I recommend adding this [locate] option in the AdminCp -> member listing page, as it would be quite useful.

Just add the IP-address after http://www.networldmap.com/TryIt.htm?GetLocation&Template=demo.htm&ipaddress= , then it would be a plain template hack. I don't understand why you want to make changes to online.php .
DrkFusion

Seems not to be able to find addresses around in Ontario, Canada :(
The new/custom version I made of my hack had listingss, so it was easier.
Suggestion:
If you get a "not able to find at this moment" message (not exactly like that) submit the ip to there site, it will then add the city to there database so then after maybe 24-48 hours you can locate it.
*i think*
Looks , nive job, very simple to install.

True, but his method will show the host derived from the IP.
For this IP tracer service, it appears everywhere out of the U.S. gives an unspecific map location of where the user might be. The only occurences when I recieved a "not able to find at this moment" message was when tracing a Google-bot. Also, sometimes when the user is on a Proxy, usually if they have AOl, it will block out some of the fields.
Overall good hack, the zoomed in map is great. ;)

"not able to find at this moment" was the message I made up to substitute for the actual message as I was lazy to go check again :p
But exactly what I was sayng it seems all ips that you try to locate that are out of the U.S do not work.
Ahwell good for me :p 80% of the boards I go to USians run it, I am canadian :pirate:

If you would like to add this hack to the "IP Addresses" page in the Admin CP, do the following:
FIND in admin/user.php: echo "<li>$ip[ipaddress] (".gethostbyaddr($ip[ipaddress]).") ".makelinkcode("find more users for this ip","user.php?s=$session[sessionhash]&action=doips&ipaddress=$ip[ipaddress]")."</li>\n";
REPLACE WITH: echo "<li>$ip[ipaddress] (".gethostbyaddr($ip[ipaddress]).") ".makelinkcode("find more users for this ip","user.php?s=$session[sessionhash]&action=doips&ipaddress=$ip[ipaddress]")."</li>\n";
echo " - <a href=http://www.networldmap.com/TryIt.htm?GetLocation&Template=demo.htm&ipaddress=$ip[ipaddress] target=_blank class=lc>[locate]</a>";

I think I'm doing pretty good considering I know absolutly no PHP. BTW, the file is user.php in the adminCP and I have edited my previous post. :chinese:

Just out of curiosity I tried just using the html w/out the php and it does work without.
I even had others to see who were admins and they get the same results...
So basically I am asking what was the need for the additional lines to the PHP files?
Icheb
01-13-2003, 11:52 AM
There is no need. The site which locates the user only needs the IP, so you can forget the changes in the file.
madhouse
01-13-2003, 12:33 PM
I know there was no need I was wanting to know the purpose of why the changes to the PHP file... :)
ranger2kxlt
01-13-2003, 12:47 PM
If we did not add the php, the host address was sent to the site instead of the ipaddress. (thru the whosonline part anyway). Adding the php allowed for the host address to be displayed while allowing for the ipaddress to be passed.
madhouse
01-13-2003, 12:51 PM
Not true for me, I stil was able to see the ip info for who ever was online with no problems.
Boofo
01-13-2003, 03:52 PM
That's right, you are able to see the "IP" address on who's online, not the Host's address. :) With the php addition, you see the host's address (the IP address resolved) and the IP is passed. ;)

01-15-2003, 10:39 AM
Cool. I can do the same with just a template mod, using the URL you provided. Thanks. :)
Erwin
01-15-2003, 10:49 AM
To achieve a similar result without hacking, just do this:
Replace the template "threads_displayip" with this content:
The IP Address is: $postinfo[ipaddress]. The host name is: $postinfo[hostaddress]. Please click <a href="showthread.php?s=$session[sessionhash]&threadid=$threadid">here</a> to return to the thread.<br><br><b><a href="http://www.networldmap.com/TryIt.htm?GetLocation&Template=demo.htm&ipaddress=$postinfo[ipaddress]">Click here to get LOCATION of member.</a></b><br><br>
Replace the template "whosonlinebit_ip" with this:
<td bgcolor="$backcolor" align="left"><smallfont><a href="http://www.networldmap.com/TryIt.htm?GetLocation&Template=demo.htm&ipaddress=$userinfo[ipaddress]">$userinfo[ipaddress]</a></smallfont></td>
Now, when you click on the IP link in a post, or the IP address in Who's Online, you get the same info. :) No need hacking.
Boofo
01-15-2003, 11:17 AM
That's great, Erwin, but how can we get the host address to show in who's online with just a template hack? I think that was the reason for the php hack part of this. :)
Boofo
01-15-2003, 11:50 AM
Erwin, I changed one of your lines of code a little to add the username of the person who's post you select the view the IP address in and also to center it. Makes it a little nicer to have the name in front of you, too. :)
<center>The IP Address is: $postinfo[ipaddress]. The host name is: $postinfo[hostaddress].<br /><br />Please click <b><a href="showthread.php?s=$session[sessionhash]&threadid=$threadid">here</a></b> to return to the thread. <b><a href="http://www.networldmap.com/TryIt.htm?GetLocation&Template=demo.htm&ipaddress=$postinfo[ipaddress]" target="_blank">Click here to get <i>$postinfo[username]'s</i> location.</a></b><br /></center>

works great for addresses in the US but we have members from all over the world several from New Zealand and heaps from England and even onw from the UAE and well i'm from AUZ
but i found a error on that site.. one member i know is from just outside of chicargo(SP?) but his IP address came up as phillidelphia(SP?)
Erwin
01-16-2003, 04:16 AM
The IP address may reflect the member's ISP location rather than his own home location if he is surfing via a proxy server etc.

i was quite dissapointed when i tried to locate someone and it didn't work. networld map said:
We are currently unable to locate the address blah blah blah blah at this time. (replace blah with ip address :)
I suppose cause it's not a well known place or ip address.
Other than that instance it's a great piece of code.

I put this on a site with vbportal and it only works if you click the locate at the top.
and paste the ip in.
It didn't put locate under each ip...
great hack, thanks ranger

 This hack works great! The only thing that I am having problems with it is that when I first put the hack in with all the .php and template changes, I could see the host address then the locate right after and it worked great but in about 10 min later only the locate option was available and no more host address of the ip anymore. What went wrong? Do i have to change something? Thanks.
