My site currently uses vbportal for the home page. However, we've decided we dont like the design or the 60 queries it uses.

I would like to create a home page with a banner system, list of online users and current topics.

I would also like to include separate pages with articles and such.

Any suggestions on what hacks I can use to create this, using the vbulletin database and permissions, but not vbportal?

I know there are scripts for home pages and using vb permissions on non-vb pages and for links, etc. But I'm not sure which ones are the best.

Opinions?

He basically wants modules like vbportal satan :)

Vbhome and vbindex don't currently offer that

You could make it yourself, but you gonna learn quite a lot of PHP first, start with spoono.com 's PHP tutorials, they helped me get started.

I've been reading my php book for 30 mins every day since xmas day and i still haven't learnt enough to work with a mysql database so as it's always best to learn it takes a lot of work to code your own portals.

So yes... go with www.virtuanews.co.uk - it's a paid portal though

I will talk to teck about his retail version and get some information from him for the retail version. Also check out a script called SiteCore, someone released it at yaxay, it is a completly different system, but it allows you to manage your site with templates, and stuff, it looks neat, but I don't really know what it full does, but maybe using that along with vBhome would make a nice team :)
