Are you learning how to make hacks? The best way to learn how to make hacks is to learn PHP.

to be more specific:
to learn how to make own hacks you should install a lot of released hacks and try to get behind the system how they work...

learning by doing is the best way.
just start on little hacks and made small little jumps to greater ones for your own board :)
