New Profile/Postbit Feature w/o using Profile Field

Well i think i might have it right, but i don't want to end up messing up my board for trying something, so can someone explain the steps for making a new profile field without using the ones from the admin cp, like the ones where u add the php code and queries to run a stuff like that

looked, it's all a bit jumbled, and i'm not sure which part is to do with the adding the field, i can understand the query u need to add, but what else i need to add in the files

You can add a new row to the user table, I think that is whre icq and aim are stored.

Then to show it on the profile, I think you put

$user[fieldname]

where you want it to show, though you have to make the html and all.
