little hack for vbulletin / vbindex

you can use this for daily comics, babe of the week, ...

Features
- Admin control panel
- Comics page
- vbindex thingy

I included an example script wich downloads some daily cartoons ... (Dont use it! its just an example)
this script only works on unix with wget installed and access to shell

It works this way:
- you post the url of an image on a thread (for example: weekly babe)
- use that threadID and the url of the image to add the comic in the adminCP
- Now users will be able to post comments to your image :)

example (http://www.species.be/speciesv2/comics.php)
vbindex example (http://www.species.be/speciesv2/vbindex.php)

update
- I changed the comicsbit a little
- fixed the vbindex error
FIX FOR THE 404 ERROR (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?postid=341450#post341450)

If anyone installed it and uses it for other things then daily comics, please send me some screenshots

There is a similar hack for vBPortal. :) I used to have that hack, but took it down because of copyright problems - basically a lot of comics are copyright-protected and licensed - you need to pay a syndication fee to be able to show them from your site. Unless the comic is public domain of course. It's a cool hack nonetheless - just make sure you are not breaking any laws. ;)

if you think its illigal you can delete it :)

if it is illigal ....
Is it still illigal if I put a copyright on the buttom from every comic and when they click the comic they go to the official website?
if not, just delete the hack :)

Yes, it is. (Sorry.)

When someone else owns the copyright, that means you have to get their permission before you can display it on your website. They own that comic (or whatever it is) and they have every right to say "no" if they want to ..... or to specify the exact terms they decide.

After you have their permission, then you would include a copyright notice with it (usually says something like "used with permission") and you would include a link back to the source, if that's what they say you have to do.

well it would still be a good hack for a forum which shows fan art, gfx, etc, or online comics

Yes, definitely. This is a great hack. We just need to be careful how we apply it and make sure we always arrange permission to display what we want to show.

I don't think most people who violate copyrights actually intend to steal something that doesn't belong to them ...... it's much too easy to make simple mistakes like this.

I'll be back to install the hack myself, once I figure out a purpose for it at our website.

Nice job..... thanks, zertox!

well, I could take the comics out of the hack and rename it to "daily pictures" or something

EDIT: I updated everything a little

Yes, that's still illegal. :) Don't get me wrong, you have done a great hack here... just be careful not to get caught by Universal Syndicate etc. who own the copyright to the comics.

Well the hack can be used for other purposes ..
I named it comics because I use it for that :)
but you could rename it to daily something or so
daily image, weekly babe, monthly website
or whatever :)

I'm going to sleep now :)

There is nothing illegal about the hack itself.

How do I find the URL of the comic? And what do I put for thread ID?

Also, I get a 404 when I click "manage comics". Is this just because I don't have any uploaded, or is something wrong?

And I don't understand what to do with getcomics.txt. =\

It's an awesome hack, though.

first you post a comic in a thread, and then u have threadid, use that threadid (just so they can give coments to the comics or whatever you use it for)

Did you upload the admin file?

And I don't understand what to do with getcomics.txt. =\

you need Secure shell for that
what I suggest is to just download the comics u like and upload them :)

So far I've been given permission for the following:

www.movie-comics.com
http://www.nuklearpower.com
http://www.nothingnice.com
http://www.reallifecomics.com

So I'd make a comics section and then a thread for each comic? Would the comments be reset everytime the comic is updated?

Yeah. I can access the "Add Comics" part fine, just not the "Modify Comics" one.

I was afraid you'd say something along those lines. ;)

When I go to Add Comic, I still don't understand what I'm supposed to put for the URL of the comic and the thread ID.

Can you explain those two a bit more, please?

zertox
12-11-2002, 05:22 AM
first you make a new thread and you post the daily comic there
[ img]http://www.yoursite.com/comics/yourcomic.gif[/img ]
now you have a new thread, this thread has an ID, thats your "threadid"

in the url you type the url of the image
for example: http://www.yoursite.com/comics/yourcomic.gif

Thanks. I understand now.

How do I find out if I have telnet/ssh access? ^_^

zertox

ask your hosting provider

koggit

Alright. I just installed it and have two problems.

The biggest one is the Modify Comics thing giving me a 404, so I can't remove the one I already messed up. The second is it not showing up on the vB Index, only on /vB/comics.php (and yeah, I did do the comicsvbindex.txt instructions).

I'm going to call my provider right now about the telnet/ssh access, but I'd appreciate it alot if you could IM me on AIM, screen name Koggit45. If you have AIM, that is.

*Edit* Just got off the phone with them and I have SSH access.

I got problem with admin file.

The requested URL /testboard/admin/comicsadmin.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I can't manage the comics, so I assume I wont be able to delete them threw there.

How do I get this to work.

I can add comics, just not delete.

Fix for the 404 error we get when you view the Comics Admin threw Admin CP. 2 edits in the instructions...

1. this code on line 12:

maketableheaderview("Manage Comics");

needs to be

maketableheader("Manage Comics");

then in the admin/index.php addition, the code needs to look like this:

2.

// comics by zertox - http://www.species.be/
makenavoption("Add comic","comicsadmin.php?action=AddNew","|");
makenavoption("Manage comics","comicsadmin.php?","<br>");
makenavselect("Comics Options","<hr>");
// /comics by zertox - http://www.species.be/
// *************************************************

this line:

makenavoption("Manage comics","comicsadmin.php","<br>");

needs a ? after comicsadmin.php

makenavoption("Manage comics","comicsadmin.php?","<br>");

zertox
