I'm going to completely scrap my current forum setup (vbb 2.20) and install vbb2.28 fresh.
What is the best way to backup just my thread data and userinfo, and then put the data back in when everything is setup?
I use MySQLAdmin (or something like that) to manage the database on my server if that helps.
Thanks!!!

normally phpmyadmin won't work correctly for backups because of timeouts...
you have to use telnet or something like ;)
but if you haven't made DB-changes you can just upload all vb228 files and run the upgradefiles...
no need of complete delete

Just upgrade by replacing the files, then running the upgrade scripts. The database does not need to be touched.

Thx!
I did the upgrades and everything worked out!
I still should backup my DB tho... just in case right. I tried to do the SQL dump in the CP but it was like 4mb and then it tried to open in Notepad and crashed!!! heh heh

I'd strongly suggest making regular backups, if you use the option after the SQL dump then it will create a backup on the server for you, then you can download it with yot FTP client :)

I use the vBulletin Control Panel to backup...
Is that ok?
I mean - Can I still upload it afterwards?

Yep, I allways make the backup via the ACP, never had any problems with it myself ;)
