View Full Version : HackTracker: Track and catalog installations of your hacks!
What this does:
Since many people do not bother to click Install at vBulletin.org, I decided to make this hack. It allows you to track and catalog installation of your hacks and addons, manually or automatically with the callback script, so that you can view your handywork in action. :) This is only designed to collect the hack ID number, the board title, and a link to the board. Any other use is not encouraged; you could get yourself into trouble.

This is a REALLY good idea, but I am not sure if vB owners will like people monitoring their hack installation. I know I wouldn't mind, I'm just saying some may ;)

lol, i know what you mean, but imho nobody should have a problem with their url/board title being recorded unless they are a pirate.
nevertheless, an option to disable the callback function could be put in the install script if the hack author wanted to make it optional

Good idea. I do encourage members to click install if you do install a hack, because hacks do get updated and the hack author may want to notify hack installers of bugs etc. Also, it encourages hack authors to keep releasing more hacks. :)
Any hack that I install that I find uses this will be immediated disabled. Let's be honest here, there is NO REASON that a hack author needs this UNLESS he/she is selling the hack.
For the authors that use this in their hacks, please state that you are doing so when releasing so that I know not to install it.
Cheers,
~Regs.

wat u on about ^?
Regs, it is a common courtesy to allow the collection of your url/board title. this is only for a hack author to see what boards his hack is installed on, since many people (perhaps like you?) are too inconsiderate to click "install", and even if they do, they often don't have their URL available for public viewing.
i noticed you haven't released any hacks yourself; therefore you cannot possibly know how frustrating it is when people won't let you see it.
please don't be so ignorant.

This looks like a nice hack Nick, I think I will install and use this.
@Regs Nick said a few posts back that its easy to disable, also there is plenty of reason to know where you hack is being used and people are already taking measures to help cut down on there hack being distributed by warez sites. I for one will be adding this to any new hacks I write.
NTLDR, thanks. if you could check the htcall.php file, i'd appreciate it, though...for some reason it stopped working for me.

Got it working nick :D I've attached the changed htcall.php file here. The main problem I think was using $DB_site->query and not query_first for the select queries, I made a few other minor changes as well and its working great as far as I can tell :D
The only improvement I can see is being able to see the hackid on the main screen, other than that its great, thanks for sharing :)
no, thank YOU for working on that :D i'm going to change it in the zip.
gah! i need to remember to use $DB_site->query_first(); - i always make that mistake
New Version: 1.0.1b
Please upgrade as soon as possible.
Changes:
-Fixed htcall.php: Callback wasn't working properly. (Thanks NTLDR!)
Regs, it is a common courtesy to allow the collection of your url/board title.Since when? I don't want my URL posted by any hack author anywhere unless I know for sure that his/her hack does not provide any security problems.
this is only for a hack author to see what boards his hack is installed on, since many people (perhaps like you?) are too inconsiderate to click "install", and even if they do, they often don't have their URL available for public viewing.I do click on the install button for hacks I install. That, my friend, is the facility for hack authors to see how many are using their hack. How do you know "many people are too inconsiderate to click 'install'"? Seriously, how do you know? Maybe your hacks are not popular? Perhaps a hack serves a small niche? Whatever the case may be, what real difference does it make?
i noticed you haven't released any hacks yourself; therefore you cannot possibly know how frustrating it is when people won't let you see it.What is this burning desire that you just have to see where a hack is installed? I'm not a hack writer, no, but if I did, I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over not knowing how many or where my hack was installed.
please don't be so ignorant. Please explain where I am being ignorant?
Don't get me wrong, I think many hackers here are very good at what they come up with and I really appreciate the work that some of them put into their hacks. But I don't know any of them from a hole in the wall. If for some reason, they decide to start doing some malicious stuff through your code, I have absolutely no recourse, do I?
The argument about WAREZ is farcical at best... Jelsoft has a need to track this and deal with it, not somebody who makes derivatives of their product for free.
Anyways, I've said my piece here and I'll leave it at that. Call me ignorant, insinuate that I'm inconsiderate, whatever... I need to go play with the grown-ups

The fact that many threads have people asking in them for support as they have installed the hack, yet they clearly haven't clicked install, secondly the fact that you see the hack on a user website and they haven't clicked install.
As with any other hack, if you don't like it or agree to the authors conditions for use then don't use it, as simple as that.

As a VB User , i would like to say this , i have downloaded a lot of hacks in the past few days , I dont install them all . Only the ones that im comfortable with altering files.
I would say i have installed about 10% of all the hacks i have downloaded. Some of the hacks are big hacks & i remember the names of the hacks , but the small hacks .. tbh i forget their names & dont click install.
I wouldnt mind in the least installing a hack with a traceback system. In fact if traceback was in "All" hacks , then maybe it would discorage some of the pirates who rip off programmers.
