Has anyone got the vbMoods hack working with this yet? If so how?
Those who had a problem with smilies not rendering (other vbcode tags are ok for me except img and smilies, but I don't have imags on the board) did you fix it. How??
Someone mentioned back on page 7 they knew how to limit entries per day, but they didn't appear to follow up with the 'how to'. Anyone?
Has the upgrade been abandoned??
Thanx!

Sigh, it's getting like a ghost town in here. :(
Okay, I got the mood widget on the 'journal_newentrybit' template, and a 'currently playing' text box also. Looks very nice too. Of course it doesn't work, but you knew I was gonna say that didn't you? :P
I'm not unveiling this for my members until I've got at least a rudimentary 'moods', and 'now playing' going. Looks too basic without, especially as I'm touting this an an alternative to LJ.
I've searched this thread and the vbmoods one till I've gone cross-eyed, but I can't get these functions to work. So ok, time for more primitive stuff: I'll forget about vbmoods and just use text input for the 'mood' as I'm doing for 'currently playing'. Only problem is the bloody text won't go into the posting box for either one!!
* PhoenixBB weeps with frustration
I know it can be done, and I saw gamingforce has it on his journals, but god knows I can't figure it out. Surely if you use 'form' and 'input' it should post the wretched text into the box??
Someone spill the beans before I turn into Basil Fawlty and thrash the computer within an inch of it's life! Please? <ingratiating grin>

Hmm I have a small problem, whenever users use ascii faces like >.> ^.^ ..things of that nature they get changed once posted to things like &.& and so forth. Is there a remedy to this? I fixed this using a temporary method.. However, it's probably not advised.. *shrugs*. Follow the instructions in the attached .txt file. However, I don't think this will automatically update all of the ASCII faces to work, people will have to edit them or something for it to update.

Mood & Now Playing Add-On
This hasnt been released, has it?
With this add-on, users can put down a mood for himself/herself, and put what they are currently listening to. I had this for quite a long time on my board (http://www.bmiforums.com) and I finally decided to release it. Just to be safe, backup before performing this add-on. The instructions are a little lengthy, but it gets the job done. :)

Great hack - a nice addition. I've installed it and it appears to work fine with the exception of when you view a users journal, which produces an error at the top of the screen:
'Query could not be executed'
I'm able to create journal entries and they display no problems (public and private). So I'm not sure what's actually missing.
Anybody?

Ok I have decided to take on the task of adding on some options, I am adding on the ability for new comments and entries to appear in New Posts, since this is something I have been wanting for a quite sometime. Give me about a week to pull this together.
I need a break, I just added a hivemail de-limiter so you need a minimum of posts to have access and I need to finish three websites, then I'm on it.
Cheers all - This is great hack and needs to evolve.

Hi, Ramm!
Ninth Dimension is correct. This journal doesn't have selective private entries.
Unless if you're well-versed in the fundamentals of PHP, furthermore, I also advise against installing it since it seems that installations have lately been more complex than when Ryangel first released it.

Ryangel has said he will update it, which I'm sure he will once he has the time.. Anime-loo also said he was going to be coding his own version of a journal system, but he's now decided that it will be coded and released for vB3 only (the last I head from him on the subject anyway).
There are a quite a few issues and addons dealt with since the original instructions were posted. It would seem my HTML characters fix doesn't work for entries, and only comments at the moment which I will try and look into when I get some spare time..

If your bbtags aren't working correctly with the journal, there was a problem with the install..
I think someone had a similar problem earler in this thread.
I just installed this and embedded BB Code images worked the first time I tried, but subsequently they do not. I tried editing the original post with img tags, and adding more posts, but they appear simply as url-type links.
Currently, bbcodes like BOLD, ITALICS, COLOR, SIZE, URL links, and smileys and such do work. I wonder how the vBulletin code would know whether or not to display embedded images?

(I know this is trivial ;))
Well, I have an idea for you. You might change the counts so they are only incremented when someone other than the journalist or a guest visits his page.
I added the parts in yellow to journal.php. Don't forget the closing bracket!:
// Increase view count by 1
// only if the reader is not the journalist and not a guest!
if (($bbuserinfo[userid] != $userid) AND ($bbuserinfo[userid]!=0)) {
$view_up = $DB_site->query("UPDATE journal SET views=views+1 where journalid = $journalid");
if(!$view_up)
echo "Query $viewup could not be executed";
}
The reason for not having guests increment the count is that a person could simply log out and hammer their journal to increase the post count. Unless guests were already disabled from reading, as recommended elsewhere in this thread.
Of course, to circumvent this protection, they will simply need to log in as someone else and then hammer the journal. But we needn't tell them that!

Matt

Nobody implemented a way to view a journal in it's entirety or added pagination.
The entries are still there in the database, but they have been cut off from being displayed.

It would be interesting to check the database and see if the posts are still there or if it is a display problem. Particularly "Pamela's Journal" which looks like it is supposed to have 59 entries but only 22 and one-half seem to be coming up.
I think the entries are in the Journal table. If you have php-my admin, you could look and see what's there.

Hi Shadow,
Looking at your journals, the problem seems consistent across all the users. After about 22 messages, it will only print the title. It's stopping right where it should be printing the Mood & Now Playing line.
Why don't you try archiving your journal.php and uploading the original one from this thread as a test. The one without the moods mod. The fact that it is dropping out when it should be printing a mood has me thinking that this may be part of the problem.

Matt

Greetings,
Can anyone think of a reason why inline images (created with IMG tags) are not being parsed correctly using this hack? I have seen two other posts here reporting the same problem, and I have been tearing my hair out over it.
1) Other BB code is fine: smiles, underline, bold, italic, font, color , 2) URLs are do not autolink but can be linked manually with URL /URL tags.
3) When I embedded IMG /IMG tags, with the required brackets, of course, it simply displays the unlinked URL surrounded by the IMG /IMG tags.
I have even tried hacking the post display procedure to make it ignore the forum's individual preferences on IMG display, but it doesn't work!!

You know, I was really thinking about this in the shower and I thought that this might be a start to solving the whole blog business.
Most people in the anime community really enjoy owning their own blog -- a journal style site that is customized entirely by them, but the majority of the time they don't want to bother with actually setting up the script that runs the blog's background -- that's where vBJournal comes in (excellent work on vBJournal Lite, btw.)
If an admin were to put two custom profile fields, hidden on profile view but editable by the user; one for 'Custom Journal Header' and one for 'Custom Journal Footer', and having journal.php call this custom header and custom footer that the user has defined, this would allow the journal system to work it's magic as a backbone for their site -but- not actually have your site keep their site's data and thus, saving on your bandwidth as a whole.
It's a tradeoff, but I think it'd work well if journal.php can skip around the default header/head inserts/style. It'd take a little work on FAQing for the user, but in general, I don't believe this would be too hard to implement.
Thanks for the great work guys. :)

how can i get the number of comments to show up on the journal-home (journal.php) (where it shows 10 latest entries)
memobug
10-02-2003, 01:15 PM
I just installed this and embedded BB Code images worked the first time I tried, but subsequently they do not. I tried editing the original post with img tags, and adding more posts, but they appear simply as url-type links.
I think I resolved the problem with the no embedded image display that a couple of people were reporting. The problem appears to be that the bbcode parsing improperly executed. It was called like this:
bbcodeparse($journal[entry]);
Ordinarily there would be additional parameters, $forumid and $allowsmilies, for something like this
$journal[description] = bbcodeparse($journal[entry],$forumid,$allowsmilies);
Then bbcodeparse would lookup the forum's image display flag and decide whether to display html, images and smilies. It would pass those instructions forward as additional argumetns to bbcodeparse2 like this:
bbcodeparse2($bbcode,$dohtml,$dobbimagecode,$dosmi lies,$dobbcode)
Of course the journal doesn't have a valid forum ID, so it was behaving a little strangely and not displaying images on my forum on my server. It worked for some.
The Bottom Line
But if you have this problem, you can make the bbcode call explicit, and tell it absolutely whether to display html, embedded images, smilies and bbcode in your journals:
1. Around line 680 (I have added stuff so the numberings off by +/ 10 lines:
// replace this:
$journal[description] = bbcodeparse($journal[entry]);
// with this:
$journal[description] = bbcodeparse2($journal[entry],0,1,1,1);
2. around line 360
// replace this:
$journal_comment[comment] = bbcodeparse($journal_comment[comment]);
// with this:
$journal_comment[comment] = bbcodeparse2($journal_comment[comment],0,1,1,1);
That should take care of embedded images. I suppose you could also make it ....1,1,1,1); to enable the display of html in your gallery.
Next step, figure out why URLs are not being hotlinked automatically!

Matt

Can I get any help with making a comment? When a user makes a comment and clicks on "Add comment" button, it can't find the page, and the comment information doesn't go to the database.
EDIT: Ok, I sorta fixed it, but the info STILL doesn't go to the database. It just goes to the main Journal page. This is the link I have in the journal_comments template.

EDIT II: Nevermind, fixed it, I just deleted the templates and reinstalled just the template section. Turned out to be one stupid thing that was missing. >_>;

reismark's Blog: 9 Entries | 131 Views | 5 Comments
spycatcher34's Blog: 6 Entries | 84 Views | 7 Comments
etc.
etc...

Is there a way for me to turn off the option that admins can read private entries?
memobug

You'd need to hack the journal.php Look for /* View Journal Page */ and find:
//check if user is owner of journel or user is admin.
if(($bbuserinfo[userid] == $userid) || ($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == "6"))
and take out the
||($bbuserinfo[usergroupid]=="6"
If after doing that, the EDIT option still comes up next to the private entries, you'd hack the /* Edit Entry */ code in a similar way to prevent the admin from just clicking EDIT to read the post.
Of course, none of this is bulletproof; if you have database access you can read all you like.

Matt

Thank You. I didnt have to do the Edit one. Its works fine now.
And i want the people at my board to feel that they can type whatever they want the the Admins wouldnt see it by accident or something. I wouldnt be reading their private entries on purpose anywayz, so its doesnt matter if its still in the database.

I love the hack! It's perfect except for one thing.. The Who's Online screws up when people view their journals.
Is there a way to fix that?
Check out the attachment for a screen shot.

If you click it, it still takes you to where they are...but I haven't figured out how to fix that part. lol

You can use FireFly's Online Locations hack to make it say what you want. ie, "Using Journal System".

You know what would be something cool...is to somehow make it where a users journal was accessible from a subdomain. Like when a user registers for your boards it creates a subdomain like "whoever.boards.com" and the subdomain would point to their journal...then people could tell their friends "Hey...go look at my journal at 'whoever.boards.com'" and then you'd get tons of extra traffic and then you'd probably have the most popular boards ever created....all because of my idea :)

if your server supports htaccess files, you should be able to do something like this through a simple redirect. I have used it to spoof user and keyword subdirectories, so you could probably do subdomains if that was your thing.
You'll see what happens to the address bar when you click this link. htaccess turns the path /user/AutomatikStudio into a search on the term AutomatikStudio:

Unfortunately, this did not make my forum the most popular on the Internet, however the latest stats indicate we are running a close second. ;)

Ok total weirdness!
has anybody had a active journal user, lose thier postbit link that shows up? Even if they have a journal and its active? This user is the only one and i checked all his setting in phpMyAdmin and they are fine, but the postbit only on him disapearing is completely weird as hell
Anybody have an idea?

If you are not going to port this hack to vB3, wouldn't the "polite" thing be to release it for modification by someone else?
I know the hours spent to create this hack, and believe me, the community knows that it is fortunate to have creative, generous and skilled hackers like yourself. And I can find no justification for people "demanding" that you spend your time the way that they see fit. In my mind, no one is under any obligation on these forums to "port" their hack to vB3!
And I'm certainly not "demanding" that you respond to the emails requesting to modify your hack with the proper credit given.
However, while it is obviously "your baby" if you aint'a gonna rock it, why not let others have a turn? They say it takes a village to raise a child. And I'd love to see your great hack grow up with all the rest of the kids.

Ryangel's last post was like in November of 2003...so they may not be around...
I thought someone was working on this hack for vb3...? Maybe that was a different version I was looking at...
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=61503
the original hack was vbJournal 1.1b By Ryangel.

There was a discussion by Bradloo of porting this to vB3, but he decided not to release it.
There was a vB3 journal released by Wonko of Shinra (the thread you highlighted), but it was deleted by the admins because of permissions problems. He stated he emailed Ryangel for permission but evidently has received no response.
KuraFire planned to release a vB3 journal, but has since decided not to post more hacks on this board.
So, without some public acknowledgment from Ryangel that he grants permission for others to upgrade his journal to vB3, it looks like this wonderful mod will remain forever an obsolete vB2 mod.
What a pity, uh?

Fleabag,
Could you clarify how one gains permission to port this hack to vB3 if Ryangel does not respond to emails requesting permission?
I'm sure there is a standard procedure...I'm just not aware of exactly how that works.
Thanks

Not to be a pain or anything but Ryangel responded to a question by me way back https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=302863&postcount=87 saying it would be fine to modify the code provided it's documented so why can't this vB3 update be released

Just to repeat some questions posted here:
is there a way to display the latest entries in a non-vb page (similar to Pluh News hack)?
is there a hack that could provide a link to all user entries?
how can we display a link to a user journal in profile?
Thanks in advance

I'm sorry to ask this if its been solved...but did anyone find a solution for avatars? Custom avatars show up in journal stats, non-custom avatars aren't showing up. Is there a solution posted somewhere? Thanks in advance.

This is perfect for my site due to it's for Teenagers and they always got something to say about their Personal life, and instead of making a forum for Personal stuff people can just look at Journals. Great and easy insatll.
