View Full Version : No Buddy List, No PM

How much work would it be to remove all references to the buddy lists and private messages? Just posting, on the board, no PM. The buddy lists spook me a little. Seems like a great way for advertisers to follow you around. So, to excise these two features and all references to them would be... in terms of work/time?
Thanks... :)

to remove both things completly, i think it'll take a very long time, but removing just the thing seen could be done in i think 1 hour (depends on how much styles to edit)
at first you should delete related files and parts in files (private*.php and member.php some parts)
then go through your templates and search for PM and buddy...

Thanks for that Xenon. I think I understand what you mean. Just delete the most obvious occurences of them and then work away as they pop up? You mentioned the private.php & memeber .php files. If you or anyone else can suggest the other files where I should start cutting, that would be great!
Thanks all... :)

as long as you don't change the database-structur, it should be enough to work on these two files, editing the templates would do all you want then..
every other file you can do perhaps cosmetic (;)) operations, but not really needed

You can disable PM feature of your board via Admin CP/Settings if that's what you want.
As for BuddyList there is no easy solution but frankly I didnt get how this can be abused? Putting someone in your buddy list does not give you any advantage except noticing his board presence more easily. Well this wouldnt be a big deal for anyone to access this info because they can track this via who's online too. So IMO it's unnecessary to try to disable it. But if you are determined, follow Xenon's path and remove template codes so people couldnt see any traces of it in your board..

Xenon & Logician,
In the member.php, I keep searching for buddy... but it doesn't come up. What does the template code for the buddy button look like?
Thanks... :)

IMO you dont need to edit php files, just edit the template "usercp" and remove HTML tags of buddy table and nobody would access it anymore. If you want to remove "Add to buddy list" links you need to modify other relevant templates too. You can search keyword "buddy" inside Templates/Search to track relavant templates..
