Hello.

I'd like to ask if there is any hack that would create subforums... or do we have to wait for the V3 of the VB to have them? :)

thanx in advance

NTLDR

This is a standard feature of vB 2.x, no hacks are required for it.

Really?!!!
thats great!

I haven't seen any VB with subforums (like the ones here :

http://beta.vbulletin.com/vb3/forumdisplay.php?forumid=2 )

does anyone have a link of a 2.x forum that has subforums, and what is the max depth of forums I can create?

and something else I'd like to ask...
could someone direct me to the hack that I can use to make private forums?

thanx
p.s. u made my day :)

Private forums are also a built in feature of vB.

Have a look at my forums, the archive on on my site has subforums in and the full releases forum here also have a sub-forum, beta hacks.

As for maxiumum depth, I *don't think* there is a limit, I've gone at least 3 or 4 deep before.

Can someone please suggest a basic approach/philosophy on deciding the number of forums to create? (other then obviously, "keeping it simple...")

I would like to use subforums, but I'm worried that I already have to many forums. I'm not sure subforums will help with organizing my BB. Should subforums help a user know where to post a topic, or just confuse things more?

I've been perplexed with this question for some time. I'd like some help organizing my site. I'm currently using UBB6, but, as soon as I can afford it, I want to switch to vB. Kind of hoping vB3 will be available when I make the switch, but it seems there isn't a release date yet.

Regards,
Rand

Subforums, I would say are for splitting up a forum into finer detail, for example:

Operating Systems
- Windows XP
- Windows 98
- Linux
- Unix

Here as well as having a general OS forum, its been split up to organise threads based on the OS.

The number of forums you have partly depends on what topics the board is going to cover, and how many members/posts that you have.

Using sub-forums may make it more confusing for members or it may help by organising the discussion better.

Thanks NTLDR,

In my case, I think even an experienced vB designer might be challenged organizing my BB. I definatley think I have to many forums, but the subject of my forums is a bit obscure.

I've also wondered if the current vB2.* allows for creating a forum that is linked to an existing forum (basically having two names for the same forum)? I've thought this might help my BB.

In case anyone has the time/interest in helping me further with this... WoundTx.com (http://www.woundtx.com/forums/index.html). (Chronic wound care... sorry, won't find any pictures :) )

Please email me privately if this is going off-topic.

Thank you very much.
Rand

There is a hack that will allow you to create a forum which you can link to another forum, or any website, this will be a standard feature for vB3.

Is it possible to display the same topic in two or more Forums?

That is, have 2 Forums with links to the same topic. That might make it simplier to force people to post in the best topic, (copy/link some topics in several Forums.)

That is what would probably work best for me, though I really need someone's help to get this figured out.

Thanks for the feedback.

May I ask what the difference is between Templates and Hacks?

:)

You can copy a thread (topic) from one forum to annother so it appears in both, however when you reply to one the reply doesn't appear for the other one, if you see what I mean.

If that isn't what you want, you are able to move a thread and leave a redirect in the origional forum, this leaves a link to where it was moved to for users to follow and may be more like what you are looking for.

Templates: These contain the HTML that is used to display the page, for example the banner and buttons are in the header template.

Hacks: These are modification to the PHP source code found in the files that make up vB.

Hi NTLDR,

Thank you for your continued assistance.

Yes, I understand your explaination of copying a topic to another Forum. Do you think this is something that will be offered in vB3? That is the ability to post in a topic and have the new post appear in the same topic in two different Forums.

Is this hackable? Is it possible to place the topic "link" in two different Forums? That way you'd access the same topic from multiple Forums.

Also, is it easy to move a single post to another topic?

As it appears you have some insight to vB3, are you a beta tester? Are there many people tesing it currently. I've seen the vB3 alpha thread at vbulletin.com, but I haven't seen any discussion of time lines.

I'd like to get started with vB2.* and it sounds like it will be a simple upgrade when vB3 is available.

Again, thank you.
Rand
There is a hack that will allow you to create a forum which you can link to another forum, or any website, this will be a standard feature for vB3. Sorry, I just reread your earlier statement. Do you know if this feature will work appropriately by allowing new posts to display in both Forums? Why can't it be done now?...

As far as I am aware this won't be avalible in vB3, but should be hackable, you can place the link to the topic/thread in many forums, by "moving" it around, there is also a hack that allows you to create threads that are just hyperlinks to somewhere so that would be another option.

This is very easy and a built in feature of 2.x.

As it appears you have some insight to vB3, are you a beta tester? Are there many people tesing it currently. I've seen the vB3 alpha thread at vbulletin.com, but I haven't seen any discussion of time lines.

The only testing I have done is on the Alpha 1 (http://beta.vbulletin.com/vb3) site, the vB Team are not giving any dates for release but a public beta for members to test should be avalible I September, we all hope :)

I'd like to get started with vB2.* and it sounds like it will be a simple upgrade when vB3 is available.
This should be as simple as running an upgrade script and uploading the new files.

The forums as links are just links to somewhere else, another website, or a forum, they are just hyperlinks that direct you to another place and are not "real" forums. I think thats what you were reffering to.

Hi NTLDR,

Forgive me if I'm beating this point to a pulp... but,You can copy a thread (topic) from one forum to annother so it appears in both, however when you reply to one the reply doesn't appear for the other one, if you see what I mean....should be hackable, you can place the link to the topic/thread in many forums, by "moving" it around, there is also a hack that allows you to create threads that are just hyperlinks to somewhere so that would be another option. Were both these responses addressing the same question? If so, I like the second response better. It sounds as if vB is very customizeable, therefore creating links to the same topic in multiple forums sounds doable.

The reason this is important to me, is that currently I have about 75 Forums (UBB). Users have to many Forums/Topics to choose from. If I continued to think it important to have so many forums, I might be able to simplify a decision where to post if some of the same Topics were found in several of the Forums.

Not sure this makes sense, but this is basically the maddness I've been dealing with since I started my BB. Unfortunately, I think it's more a matter of content rather then a function of the BB.

Thanks again.
Rand

Yes they are both ways of achiving the same thing, I would recomend the Hack by Chen (aka FireFly (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=1)) where you or any Administrator can post a link that will look just like any other thread/topic which you can just enter the URL to the topic you want to display when you click on it.

I hope I have explained that in a way in which you can understand ;)
