View Full Version : Vote to Ban

The idea came from AOL Instant Messengers warn system. The hack would add a button called “warn” or something similar, which would be added to the posbit or profile template.

Any member can click the button, and invoke a form similar to the “report post to a moderator feature”. The form would allow the member to enter a reason, and once submitted, would private message and/or email the member a warning with the reason.

Each member has the ability to warn a particular member once, similar to voting on a poll one time. Once a member reaches x-amount of warnings, they are automatically banned or suspended pending ban authorization from the administrator.

Awesome idea, I would love a hack like this.

There IS a hack like this called Warning - you can set the number of warnings eg. 4 - then the member is automatically banned.

Just do a search in Full Releases. I have had this installed for a while now (only recently removed it).

The closest thing I found was this (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32856&highlight=warn) and it's not the same as my request. Other threads about a warning system are also requests, but not hack releases.

That is it.

Look at this part of his code:

$ban = 1; // 0 = Never ban nomatter what; 1 = Ban after $numwarn has been passed
$numwarn = 3; // Number of warnings till user gets banned
$bannedgrp = 13; // Group id for banned users

You can set the number of warnings before the person gets banned. You need to modify the code a bit since it's messy (I modified it and integrated it into my suspension/ banning system).

How hard would it be to make it so a regular user can warn by clicking on a link within the postbit? That hack has it in the admincp for use by the admin only.

It would also need a check added to allow a user to warn another particular user one time only. Otherwise, the system would be abused like hell.

still Avenger it would be abuse like hell either way ;p cause if all the members gang up on a member goodbye... so im not really a fan of it right this moment sorry ;\

That would be the whole intention of the "vote" part. If people gang up on a particular user... chances are, that user isn't liked very much. What you said is the exact reason for the hack. On the other hand, the admin would be stupid to set the amount of votes ("warns") needed to ban a user. Instead of 3, the number would be more like 100 or something, depending on the size of the board.

The Karma hack has this built in - look for it - users who give bad karma to another user will get that user banned if enough bad karma is given. :) I think vB3 has this as standard too.
