Whoa, whoa - let's not use words like "sell" in here!

I don't earn a lot, and if people decide to donate money to me I'm grateful - so grateful in fact that I send them my hacks! ;)

I wasn't planning on releasing it to the public anyway - but a few people got in touch and asked me if they could pay me for it... I wasn't aboutto turn them down!

I think this must be the session timeout issue coming up again. Change "Cookie timeout" in your vB options to 1800 instead of 900, see if it makes a difference

oh i saw this

// If the user doesn't belong to certain usergroups, show the no permission page
if (($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == "1") or ($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == "3") or ($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == "4")) {
show_nopermission();
}

so I guess maybe because of this my user get no permission problem

Supercool this is! I am a total newbie on hacks, but this Tetris thing is way cool!

I've just tried it out on: http://www.fetter-esel.com/vB/tetris.php?action=play&s= on I was wondering if we could set the amount of posters that will get into the TOP list. I mean, you now have to gain soooooooooooo much points to get anywhere near the top 10. Ofcourse, I KNOW this is the whole point of having a TOP 10 in the first place, but I think a lot of my members on my board would find it very very nice to be able to get just their NAME and comment on this Tetris-list. So I was wondering.... could you make an option so that we can set how long the TOP list will be? 10, 30, 40, whatever? When you make a TOP 20 list, you can alsways HIGHLIGHT those TOP 10 members or something, I just think that MORE people will play along if it wasn't to hard to get your name on this list. Just an idea.....

John
08-21-2002, 11:34 AM
Easy Grover - all you have to do is open tetris.php and replace

LIMIT 10

with

LIMIT [number in top list]

(It occurs twice)

Ninth Dimension
08-21-2002, 11:36 AM
FIND: $leaderboard_q = $DB_site->query("SELECT * FROM arcade WHERE game='tetris' ORDER BY score DESC LIMIT 10");
REPLACE WITH: $leaderboard_q = $DB_site->query("SELECT * FROM arcade WHERE game='tetris' ORDER BY score DESC LIMIT <number>");

This will need to be done twice, and <number> needs to be replaced with whatever number you want on the highscore.

This however produces produces more queries based on the number you are showing in the leader board (one extra for each person). There was another suggestion in this thread about how to reduce this, but I don't know if it works with the latest verson or not.

Hope this helps?

I could be wrong, but from the code I can see that for each score in the leader board it does another query to get the users username, this line:$user_result = $DB_site->query("SELECT username FROM user WHERE userid='$s_userid'");This will result in a query for each person listed on the leaderboard

I know! IE is obviously a far superior browser, can't people just accept it?

I know someone who refuses to visit a site if it doesn't work with Netscape 4.xx. And nothing works with Netscape 4.xx...

Okay, I have one modification question...this is the code to keep unregistered (guests) out:

if ($bbuserinfo[username] == "Unregistered") {
show_nopermission();
}

Is there a like-kind code I can keep all but a select few usergroups out? I am thinking of allowing only Supporting Members (usergroup=11 on my board) this perk, as well as other games.

And with the new version, all you have to do is replace:

if (($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == "1") or ($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == "3") or ($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == "4")) {
show_nopermission();
}

with

if (($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] != "11") && ($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] != "6") && ($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] != "5") && ($bbuserinfo[usergroupid] != "7")) {
show_nopermission();

portion

The two files that have changed are tetris.php and tetris.swf
The only template that's changed is "tetris"
There have been two new SQL queries since 2.0

In the tetris template, "&sec_no=$sec_no" was added to the end of the parameter string. It passes a security number over to the Flash file.

tetris.swf has had a few improvements, including the level 10 fix.

tetris.php has undergone a LOT of changes.
1. New security system. Random variables are generated and passed along the system, should this line be broken or the variable be changed, things won't work.
2. No permission bug fixed, with a date system. It deletes records with a score of 0 that are over 60 minutes old.
3. Loads of tiny security fixes

I can't list the code for al of these, because over half of it has changed. When you say you've made changes to the HTML, are you talking about templates? Few changes have been made to the templates, tetris.php is the important file.

Ninth Dimension
08-21-2002, 03:44 PM
You have a problem with your above code, by doing that you will lock yourself and mods out of the game, unless they are usergroup 11, which we all know they won't be :)

John
08-21-2002, 03:49 PM
Ignore Ziggy's code above, it's wrong - it doesn't pass any variables along to the Flash file.

If you install that it won't work

Hey dan,
You mean in the Flash file or the header/footer table cells?
You can change the wmode params from "transparent" to "opaque" also, this should let you darken it w/hex so yourtext shows better. Theres alot of combinations you could use there? Just something to play with if you're not happy w/the default colors?

I just popped in for a sec, I'm busy on integrating multiple vBportals into a single VB arrgghhh :D

Just received this PM from DestyNova:

PM removed

Ok, let's just say that I'm am seriously annoyed now. I will now address any issues which some of you may have.

Re: vB Tetris

1. vB Tetris is not the flash tetris game. It is the hack which allows a scoreboard to be kept of high scores in a GPL game.
2. As a GPL game I can legally distribute it.
3. That's exactly what I'm doing.

Re: The Arcade Hack

1. This, like vB Tetris is a HACK. It's packaged as a hack. All of the games in it are GPL, it is legal for me to distribute them.
2. People who have sent me donatations are not paying for any games. I'm giving them the arcade hack, I AM NOT SELLING FLASH GAMES. Once again, this is legal. If it makes people happy I'll send it as two files - one with the hack in, and one with the games in.
3. I no longer intend to ever release this hack to the public, due to the issues raised here.

DestyNova
08-21-2002, 05:21 PM
Since you ahead post it so I guess I should add some bit information. After I email these makers to make sure about GPL, since I m not really fully knowledge with GPL rules anyway I got odd email from one of makers said that they got several complaints about their games "sell" at vb.org. So it force me to email to John about sell issues. But John now clear up about it with me and I email them already that it is not their games that which "sell" but only hack.

Also reason for this email, I dont want to have them sue John for this reason since I dont know who email them several of "complaints" emails, that maker refuse to name whos. I respect John and his works, I want to have him continue his amazing hacks at here so I have to speed up and clear up with these makers.

Schorsch

It is true that selling of hacks is viewed as a bit of a no-no, but you have got to remember that John has put a lot of time and hard work into developing the arcade hack, and it's only fair that he gets rewarded for it.

If the author is happy to give away some code for free, for whatever reason (promotion, kindness, whatever) then cool. if not, all you can do is respect their wishes?

After all, when you goto work each day, do you do it for free?

Is vB free?

From what I can see no one is selling anything, this has all got blown out of proportion.

I like John's hack, and John has been very good in supporting his hack. I am sure his time is valuable just like everyone elses.

I don't think he is looking for "pay me or else" perhaps the way it should have been said was "if you like my hack please send me a donation for beer money" :)

I hope John continues with his work and the Arcade is released to the public.

Nooooooooo, keep that way, I have NO complaints about "donate" to support your time and your hacks. Yes it will be nice to recieve free but I aint mind to make some donate if necessary to help you somewhat since you spend alots of time on it, yes I did ask you if I can get it for free but I m not quality to get it so I plan to make some donate cuz of your incredible times on this hack. So pls dont stop and keep it going no matter what complaints that makers recieved!! I m sure that some of us will happy to make some donate or more happier if you keep makin new hacks or updates for this site!!!!

I didn't say that, your standard version is great. I just said I hope that it's not getting practice to sell hacks, because then I would go back to phpBB2.
vBulletin was already expensive enough, and I simply don't have the money to buy the hacks too.

And I say absolute nothing about a volunteer donation for somebody who made a great work and build an incredible hack (like you John), probably I will do this too

vB Tetris Add-on - Front Page Mini Leaderboard
HTML knowledge required

~ Requested by Madhouse

This little add on lets you display a mini leaderboard on the front page. The templates need to be customised with colours and the table needs to be formatted to fit with your layout. Therefore I ask that only users with HTML knowledge attempt this add-on.

Screenshot of it in use in next post. (The number of results shown can be changed by altering the number after "LIMIT" in the code. Default is 3)

The whole hacks must be free mentality annoys me. If you want your board customized and don't want to pay for it a)Learn how to code and b) Figure the stuff out and do it yourself. Do NOT expect somebody else to spend THEIR time making your board better.

I no longer release hacks because idiots who aren't even qualified to run a website much less modify a complicated software package have taken most of the fun out of. I deeply love working with other developers to come up with new features, but it's not our job to listen to your whining and temper tantrums.

If mommy and daddy won't raise your allowance so that you can afford to pay developers to create modifications for you, then get a job or an education.

ok, new perception:

when I play a tetris match, and interrupt in the middle of the game (e.g. close the window, choose another link, etc...), it anyway generates an entry in the highscore list in fact with no comment and zero score.

DestaNova,

Don't talk nonsense:

After read several pages of your thread (whew) I have one concern about "sell" or "donate" to get our hands on your new games (seem that it is only way to get yours due to "selective.") I decided to email few of flash game makers about make some money out of their .fla games and give few of these makers my work email to talk over about it. I got two emails from them and they re not happy about it and want it to be free under GPL, also will email me more information later. I ll find out more information tmw cuz my worktime is over so I dont have the access to work email system from my PC.

So I plan to post about it at your thread and decide to against that and PM it over to you to let you know about it.
Who was concerned, who emailed who? This is too funny! Nice backpeddling though. ;)

Oh yea, you said:

As for "cause all sorts of ++++" again, cant you read??? I stated clear that one of makers RECIEVED many complaints from perhaps you and others about "sell" after I email maker about concerning on GPL issues

Yea, received from you, you joker. :)

I record gets created BEFORE the flash loads, it's part of the new security John added, when you finish the game it will modify that particular entry. The script performs a clean up of such emty records when new ones are added.
Once you have more then 10 'real' records those empty records won't be a factor anymore on your leader board anyway. But if it really bugs you add 'AND score > 0' in both leaderboard queries.

Yeah, that's right - I didn't think it's be much of an issue seeing as most boards have a lot more than 10 high scores anyway - I've already added the 'AND score > 0' SQL as Castel suggested above in the next version.

Basically, a licence is a page with loads of info about the user including pictures and bits of text that make journals more interesting :)

Just a few things to make clear first (you probably already know this, just to make sure:

1. This hack has nothing to do with the Store Hack.
2. This hack has nothing to do with the Flash Player hack
3. To use the crown hack addon, you must have this hack installed (The tetris addon hack)
4. If the problem is with this hack, post it here. If the problem is with the crown hack, post it in it's own thread.

After what stage does your error occur? After you install this hack, or the crown one? If so, can you successfully install this hack?

Nothing is altered in the installation, you can't have reversed it fully.

My bet if that you screwed something unrelated up when you were installing.

Ninth Dimension
08-22-2002, 03:24 PM
crossova - first off I just want to say you NEED this hack for the tetris king hack to work (goto the first post to download it).

Now with that said, I think you have made an error when installing the king hack or the "other" tetris hack because if you had installed it correctly (without this hack) then you would be getting a diffrent error.

My advice is to re-download vb, upload the functions.php file again (unedited) and see what happens?

if that works, installed THIS hack, then try to install the king hack again.

Good luck.

i'd just like to say that from the look of it, out of the 46 pages this thread has generated, only about 5-10 of them are hack related, the rest is just bumph and un-related problems.

don't you just love un-moderated forums??? :)

what can I do?

Nothing - the passing of variables to and from Flash never works properly in Opera, let alone Linux!

Just some questions about security:

I rewrote most of the tetris.php file, but without using the security check and whatnot. Right now I have my code just checking the referrer, so (in theory) the only way that somebody could cheat is if they spoofed the referrer, like by doing a manual HTTP request from a web server through telnet or something.

Are there other known ways of cheating that need to be addressed?

I have the permission code set up so that an admin can just choose which groups they want to have access to the games via the admin panel.

The only good addition I could think of is a daily or weekly leaderboard that pulls info from the last x hours. That'd be cool ;)

Is anybody aware of any other Flash games out there that return a high score?

And on that note, is the .FLA file for the most recent version of vbTetris available? I no longer see it in the archive in the first post in this thread.

Thanks.

No, the games have to be changed to work with this hack.

The Fla file is in the first zip.

Ah, I missed the .fla file the first time around. Thanks.

Here's hoping that somebody else out there is developing some more games for this to work with! The users love the whole idea of gaming, of course, but without the high score mechanism it's pretty pointless.

I would try my hand at making a game or two, except I have never done anything at all with Flash :)

John, it is looking awesome! So there is a control panel seting that sets up an "archive" so that after the week is out, the high score registers with the member's name and the score board resets?

And can we set it to every 3 days or something?
And can every game, have it's own "crown"? That would be cool. ;)

Pruning is cool, and having it only record the users highest score so one guy can't take over the whole leaderboard. But if a member betters their score, it would be better to just have it edit the member's current high score as the guy can still take over the board.

To do that, you just have to select both record and display highest scores only. :)

You must be running the new version of the tetris.swf file, with a 1000 lines at level 10. That was my gripe in a previous post after John update. I know he is trying to please as many people as possible, bless his soul, but at level 10 you get nearly 1000 points per quick drop and line. You'll eventually see score much higher then that especially since it doesn't speed up.

Maybe one day some1 will be bored enough to make a 1000 lines, that in itself will be 1mil + quick drops. Before my upgrade one of the the players got close to 200k and was about 30k ahead of the 2nd score.

NexDog

And here's something that could/should be included in the hack.

In online.php, find:

case 'spider':
$userinfo[where] = "Search Engine Spider";
break;

and right above it, add:

case 'tetris':
$userinfo[where] = "Playing <a href='tetris.php?action=play&s=$session[sessionhash]'>Tetris!</a>";
break;

then find:

case '/robots.txt':
$userinfo[activity] = 'spider';
break;

and right above it, add:

case 'tetris.php':
$userinfo[activity] = 'tetris';
break;

Now, when you view the "Who's Online" page, you'll get a nice display of who is playing Tetris.

Here's a screenshot:

I can't get my head round the whole "display highest scores only" thing (where the member's highest score appears in the leaderboard only.).

I've tried to get help in vBorg, but no-one will help. The people who I have spoken to seem to think it's too difficult. Shall I spend some more time on it, or scrap the idea?

If you enable "Record highest scores only" from the start, you essentially get the same thing.

I'll post the main issue here, so everyone can have a go.

Basically, I need a SQL query that will select the highest score each userid has, and output the records.

So:
1. There's only one record per userid value
2. And the score value that corresponds to the userid is the highest one.

Lanigironu
08-23-2002, 05:46 PM
I suppose you could do it the server intensive way by having it go through each member, check if they have a score, and if so get the the highest one. But that might cause problems with bigger boards.

John
08-23-2002, 05:47 PM
Already thought of that, it would be VERY server intensive

Lanigironu
08-23-2002, 06:06 PM
Then you could just go through the inputted scores, set the score it gets to a variable and just compare it every time it finds another score by that user. If the score it found is bigger than the one in the variable, it replaces it.

I can get you the code for this if you want, but I'll need your table structure.

This only needs a single query. Try this:

$leaderboard_q = $DB_site->query("SELECT game,userid,comment,max(score) as maxscore
FROM arcade
WHERE game='tetris'
GROUP BY userid
ORDER BY maxscore DESC
LIMIT $yourlimit");

That should give you what you need.

I am making a new scoreboard right now that does just this. I'll post a link when it's done.

There are two issues with the actual Flash game (Tetris) I'd like to bring up. One is a suggestion, the other is a possible bug.

1. Suggestion: On the introduction screen (after the Loading), there could be a way to bypass it and go straight to the game. I know it only lasts a few seconds, but when you're on a roll, trying to get the next high score, it's seconds of agony waiting for the game to hurry up and frickin' start. :)

2. Problem: I don't know the level number, but it's the one that starts with a single line going all the way across the screen, closer to the top, with a two-block-wide hole near the middle. If you get a zig-zag-shaped piece right away, and fill in the hole in that line, the line does not disappear right away. The line does not disappear until you drop the next piece. It doesn't matter where you drop the next piece, and obviously, you can't make a solid line with it, but as soon as you drop it, the line you made with the first piece then disappears. I hope you can understand what I'm saying.
