View Full Version : "Mark Forum Read" hack?

I'm in the process of moving from an ezboard system to vbulletin, and my users have requested something that appears to be a hack.
On ezboard, when you "mark this forum read", it jumps back to the forum list. On vbulletin, it stays where it was at, the thread list for that forum.
Now, it seems to me, if you're making a forum as read, you don't really plan to stick around in it anyway.
Has anyone done a hack to make the "mark forum read" take you back to the forum list automatically? If so, I'd be extremely interested.
Thanks!
John

I didnt test this one but I believe it will work, give it a shot..
edit forumdisplay.php, find:
if ($url=="") {
$url="index.php?s=$session[sessionhash]";
}
Replace it as:
$url="index.php?s=$session[sessionhash]";
Also dont forget to change the relevant template(redirect_markreadforum) which says, "we are taking you where you were" ;)
Enjoy..

When I change this, and attempt to enter a forum, I get this error:
Parse error: parse error in forumdisplay.php on line 44

Are you using Opera browser? Dont copy/paste from here, type directly in NOTEPAD

I've modified the code in Notepad, and re-uploaded it via FTP. It still gives an error, so I had to revert to the original code.
I DO appreciate the help, though :)

Pal it's related to you.. I checked it out, it does not give me any errors and it does the trick and works too..
I'm attaching the instruction to a text file too. Maybe copy/paste from there can help you, but you can be sure nothing is wrong with the code..

Well, it must have been me, because I did it again, and now it works.
Thanks a ton! It's exactly what we wanted.

There are a lot of hidden treasures waiting to be discovered in Request forum for ones who can use their Search buttons. ;)

Is there any way to modify this code just a bit so it returns you to the parent subdirectory? You know....like if you have several subdirectories, you might want to return to the one it's in, then return to the home page. Did I say that right? LOL I hope you understand what I'm asking.
Thanks so much for this, though! It's been one of my peeves for quite some time! :classic:

I was going to ask the same thing, SloppyGoat. The hack that Logician was kind enough to provide works great unless you have sub-forums (something we'd like to have, but don't yet). In the case of marking a sub-forum read, I wondered if there was a way to make it just go back up one level, instead of back to the main forum listing.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say! You worded it better than I did. Hehehe. ;)

I see that this question has been asked a couple of times in different threads, but no one's ever answered it. I did a lot of searching (which I confess I didn't know enough about back when I originally asked this question, and for that I apologize).
Here are the threads I've found that talk about Mark Read Redirection in some form or another:

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39413

If anyone can answer this, it would be GREATLY appreciated. I simply don't know enough about vBulletin's inner workings to manage it, but know that my members would love me for it.
