No matter what I do I cannot get subforums to show up on the forum home :(
Any idea what the problem might be?

You need to add new forumhome_forumbit_levelXXX_YYY templates, where XXX is the depth, and YYY is "nopost" or "post". You can base those templates on the default forumhome_forumbit2_nopost/post templates.
