Hi guys, don't know where to post this, but currently Im running a YaBB forum and I would like to purchase VBB, but I would wish that I won't loose al my members and their posts and the threads, both forums run a database, so can I keep the old things when running VBB ?
Thanks for reading!

I'm afraid there is currently no importer for YaBB.

And how about manually ? And does VBB not understand YaBB code ?

You'll be happy to know an unofficial importer has just been released by beheader, in the releases forum. :)

Thanks FireFly. I found that post using the search tool. I'm also a YaBB user who sincerely wants to migrate to VBulletin too, and a new poster here.

The problem is: I don't have access to that board to read the post and to know if it's going to work for me, so its kind of a catch-22. I get a popup telling me to post here or...

If there is a converter, I should think you'd want to publicize that info rather than keep it a secret to people that already own vBB and presumably, don't require a converting.

Therefore, if it doesn't bridge any copyright restrictions, or make someone feel really bad or irritable, I would sincerely appreciate it if someone would take it upon him/herself to quote or summarize the posting here where the lepers can read it. We are waiting to be healed!

I have almost pulled the trigger on a vBulletin purchase twice already. The problem is I am looking at a user database of almost a thousand, and the prospect of dealing with a manual migration keeps me back.

Thanks in advance

Matt

You can read it now, memobug. :)

I sincerely agree with memobug, I tried the same things he said but it says I have to buy it first and then I get the licence and acces, but with my server you never know. Sometimes things don't work and I'd rather like to check the importer first. Well I don't have a database of 5000 users, but 500 and 4000 threads atm which are important, and people will not like it when they loose everything. So it would be a good choice to make it available for guys like us, if possible. I'm going to try it again.

Oh I'm sorry, it's already done. I think you made a good choice FireFly :). Thanks for all.

Matt,

If you are fairly computer savvy and can handle working manually in mysql the conversion process, while a bit thorny, works just fine.

And as a note, I have only about 200 users on my system, but they are all ACTIVE users. I woke up this morning to 52 "good job" posts in my mail box....

It's worth it if you are willing to work through it. You also will learn a lot while doing it.

Also note:

The conversion for me was a cathartic experience.... now we have usenet on the system, which I had sucessfully hacked into YaBB. However the hack that is provided here is much more complete, and I get the feeling I would get better support from the vbulletin team, since I was paying them, and they seem more professional....

When I asked about a usenet hack (or additional technical information about doing one), I was ignored by the YaBB team. Since that time I chucked the hack I made for YaBB, which was based on some nice GPL code, bought vbulletin, and hacked my own converter process.

Don't get me wrong- I love GPL software... but it's only as good as the people backing it. The YaBB team, is always in flux, and I've had a hard time getting their attention.

At this point, as the admin of the aswp system, it was my call to go to a commercial package. And apart from one minor irritation (I do not like how the read/unread system works) it's the best move we could of made...

Just my thoughts and good luck...

Beheader, thanks for your work, but we can't use it. You ran the CGI version YaBB 1 Gold, we run the YaBB SE php version so it doesn't work, I tried the converter but it does not work, though thanks for your work for the YaBB 1 Gold people!

You are welcome....

But if phpbb comes out with a YaBB SE converter... well, then you are in the running again....

Personally, I believe they will. Once that happens.... just plug my instructions in ...

I hope...

I love Vbulletin...

Well as I understand it there are a relatively small numbers of YaBB boards out there to convert relative to some of the other bb systems available.

Also, judging from the conversion process I went through, the YaBB data might be a little more thorny than other systems.

I agree a converter would be nice. Hope they do it... I drank WAY too much coffee working on this conversion...

Greetings folks,

I'm trying to make some sense out of the bbimport_phpbb2.php importer that I downloaded tonight from the vbulletin download.net.

After translating my database from YaBB to phpBB2, I ran the importer and wound up with a bunch of wacko italic, bold & image tags. They had all been adulterated from

whatever[ /img] and [ b]whatever[/ b]
^sorry I had to add the spaces to get it to display

to fun stuff like this

whatever[/img:DBCB1231233]

and interestingly, there was a section of code commented out of of the convertor in the function bbcode($text, $uid=0)
just, following the comment "BB CODE IS TOUGH":

/*$text = eregi_replace("[/b:[a-zA-Z0-9]]", "[/b]", $text);
$text = eregi_replace("[i:[a-zA-Z0-9]]", "", $text);
$text = eregi_replace("[/i:[a-zA-Z0-9]]", "", $text);
$text = eregi_replace("]", "[u]", $text);
$text = eregi_replace("[/u:[a-zA-Z0-9]]", "", $text);
*/

Which would, apparently to my novice PHP eyes, possibly have fixed that wacko bit.

Two questions, please

1) Does anyone know where that stuff is coming from, because it doesn't show in the phpBB code. It looks clean in phpBB and displays properly.

2) Does anyone know why that section of the code (that apparently would clean it up) has been commented OUT?

Regards,

Matt

Matt,

If you actually go in to edit a post under phpbb you will see all that legacy garbage....

When you save after your edit, phpbb stops translating the garbage correctly (dunno- but it's true)...

The only solution I found was to make the manual changes to the database...
