Anyone know where I can get a tutorial so I can make my own templates/styles?

There are not really any tutorials, it is more or less editing the templates by modifying the HTML and adding your own graphics. Other from that, it is mainly color changes and hack additions ;).

what about a readme or something to say what each template is for and so on?

In the vBulletin Members Area, hit the Resources button. It has a template tutorial there
