I'd like to be able to virus check attachments / images etc. before they are uploaded. Is there a hack for this?

Nope, and its 100% not needed (unless you have a warez forum). Name of the game: be careful.

That is nice... but why is it 100% not needed?

IMO it's needed and it would be nice to have this one. However the problem is how can this hack be coded? In order to virus check a program that is in the internet, you need to

a) A virus check program that will be installed to your server (I dont know any)

b) A site that makes online virus check (and free) for the files that are in the internet (Again I dont know any).

Your best bet can be to find a commercial site (in step b) and integrate their algorithm to vb attachments.

The only way at present is to moderate the attachments and check them yourself before approving them.

Yeah....

If that could be automated in the Control Panel... If virus free according to the current virus program...then they go through.... if not... they need to be moderated....and an Email is sent to admin.

For a) something like trend serverprotect for linux could be used (you'd need to store attachments as files) but at $500 (USD) its not cheap. http://www.trendmicro.com/products/splinux/ . Mcafee offer a similar product called NetShield (http://corporate.mcafee.com/content/software_products/avd_fileserver_default.asp) for NetWare or NT, $400 (USD) or for the hacker out there " Symantec AntiVirus Command Line Scanner (http://enterprisesecurity.symantec.com/content/ProductJump.cfm?Product=65&PID=12259688&EID=0)" NT/Solaris/Linux/NetWare could be integrated $40.

For b) I'm not aware of any useful online virus scanner which could be used in conjunction with vB all online scanners I've seen are based on the premise of running the scanner as a local ActiveX control which is not useful for doing automated scans.
