How would it be possible to set it up to where I have a list of categories only with descriptions when the person first gets to my forums index.php and then when they click a category it takes them to the actual forum list like you see on most forums...? :ermm:

Try this:

That wasn't exactly what I had in mind... I know that if you clicked the category you would be taken to forums, but what I mean is on the actual forum display itself it only shows categories... but then when you click the category you want, it takes you to what most peoples forums look like now.
For example, say they click on the vBulletin category, then they would be taken to forums that look exactly like yours with categories and everything.

Change the Depth in vBulleitn Options to 1.

But how does that do what I was saying? That doesn't sound that it will show a list of links on the main index.php and when someone clicks the cateogry it takes them to another page in the index.php or whatever with a list of categories and forums under those categories.
it changes the way the front page looks normally depth is set to 2 witch shows catagorys and forums, at depth 1 it will show only catgorys. at depth 3 it will show sub-forums of the main forums etc etc.

Did you try it?

Yea, I tested it but now it will require tons of hacking to get it to look the way I was thinking... I mean, the way that I was thinking to get mine looking was like the normal way that the categories and forums under the categories show up... Hard to explain exactly but I tried my best... what files would I need to edit to make the forum and sub forum when they click the category to look like normal forums' cateogory/forum relatiosip?
a good way of doing it would be setting the catergories to act as forum, or making one forum for each catagory you want and using the hack that shows sub-forums and doing it that way.

The thing is that I know about that sub forum hack, but that one that I saw on ECF wasn't the way I am looking for my forums to look. Let me try to explain once more...
When someone first views my index.php in the forums directory, they should be shown a list of categories... when they click the category, the way that I wanted the forums to show up once they have clicked that category is the way that forums/categories are currently set up now.
If you guys already knew that, let me know... :p
just do this, insted of making catagorys. make forums with no description (unless you want one) and give them sub-forums.
with a bit of template editing you can make it look just like you want it

Well, what exactly would I have to edit to turn those forums into "no posting" places? I don't even really want them to be links since the links would take them to a forum I don't want to use.

Install the "Collapsed forum on forumhome" hack. And if that's now what you want, I give up.

Ooooooo... I just thought of something... The 1 forum depth thing works, the only problem was that I didn't think to make the regular forum a category and then make a sub forum under that. So, that actually does work now.... thanks for your help people! I wouldn't of gotten this far although it seems like an easy fix.

Lol...
If you had perhaps constructed an image of how you wanted it to look, we could have helped more...
Anything else?
