yes, i already have it on my website...
LangTuDaTinh , u managed to let users submit their own quizzes for admin approval ?
Could you share how you did it if so ?
Would sure be appreciated :)
Is it possible to stop the quiz at a definite time but still have the ability to view the results?
Thx,

It's a little touch sensitive. If you accidentally press twice you forfeit the test. Can't it be made so the answers aren't counted until the test is complete, or one can restart the test until such time as they finish it and thus see the answers?

Not wanting to go through all 52 pages of this post, I went and fixed the admin CP slightly. If this is a double fix / post I apologize.
Anyways, What I did is make it so that the templates are listed under not your custom templates, but under the default templates under it's own collaspable category there. It also makes it so that ALL of your styles see the templates, and not just your default style so you don't have to worry about doing the manual additions.
Anyways, Ready?
Here we go:
1) Find the following bit of code in your admin/template.php:
$only['showgroup'] = 'Show Groups';
Directly below that add the following code:
//Quiz
$only['quiz'] = 'Quiz';
//End Quiz
2) Save and upload file.
3) using phpmyadmin or another similar manager for your mysql database run the following query (this simply changes the template id to '-1' so that it becomes part of the default templates.)
UPDATE `template` SET `templatesetid` = '-1' WHERE `title` LIKE '%quiz%';
(this should update ~46 templates.)
That's it, just reload your Admin CP and then view the templates. (The email and error templates for vBQuiz are under the 'email' and 'error' template categories ;))
This was done on 2.3.0, but should work for any 2.X version.

Help!
I need support!
All of a sudden, ONLY THE TOP SCORES views stopped working, both the high and the all time scores...
ONLY those links are not working.
All it loads is an empty HTML page:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
<HTML><HEAD>
<META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"></HEAD>
<BODY></BODY></HTML>
I doublechecked the tables, which seem fine.
I replaced the translated quiz.php with the original quiz.php
I checked carefully the templates but they all look fine (I just translated them and saw them WORKING for at least one month!)
Now I get nothing only on the popup contents!
Any explanation?
Can any1 help me finding out the source of the problem?
Thanks!

Have you checked your require('./global.php'); statement, and made sure that with that specific line that your file is located in the $ROOT/forum/ directory? If the file is in another directory, you'll need to do some finageling.
anytime you get a blank page, then you are either not calling $ROOT/forum/global.php properly, or your eval'd templates are screwing up. Typically it is due to $ROOT/forum/global.php not being called right.

Is there a way to hide the scores from all but admins?
I want to use this in a corporate environment, but we will
have legal problems if people's scores are generally available.
One way around it would be to allow multiple test results, but have the latest REPLACE the old score. This way, if they do poorly and don't retake the quiz, it's their own problem. If they do finally get a mastery level score, that is all that will be captured.

NOTHING will move to 3.0 without any hitches. The code is being more or less rewritten. Damn near every hack here will have to be rewritten as well...especially larger hacks such as this one.

Does this quiz allow pictures in the questions? I use a PHP based script to do this but I would like a VB based one. I use it for Vehicle ID questions which require a picture and then possible answers etc.
I would be willing to pay someone to modify this to make it work like mine,

trackpads, yes you can use standard HTML in the question (and maybe even the answers) so you will get standard HTML output. I have been using images in some of my questions at MCSE World. You can check it if you like at www.mcseworld.com/forums/quiz.php, but you'd need to register to see them.
Bottom line, yes you can use pictures. :)

The installtion makes changes to some database tables, so you'll have to manually delete those (in addition, of course, to deleting the uploaded files and changes). If you're running MySQL and have phpmyadmin, just go to the settinggroup table.
Be sure to back up your files/database first.

Dazz]Hmm.. I'm running 2.3.4 in a test environment (localhost). The hack installed perfect it seems. However, when I try to take the quiz it's taking me to http://localhost/quiz.php?quizid=1&taking=1. If I try to go to http://localhost/forums/quiz.php?quizid=1&taking=1 it just returns back to the "Take this Quiz" menu. The quiz.php is physically located in http://localhost/forums/quiz.php. So, somehow the script is trying to access a wrong page and getting a 404 of course.
My test forums work fine and all paths are set correctly in vb config files.
Is there a place in the quiz.php that's making this look at a different directory?

Hi guys.
I'm still looking at updating this for vB 3 sometime soon. At least for the user side. It could be a month or two, though, as I can't yet justify putting so much free time into such a project. I do plan to rewrite it, though.
sabret00the
04-27-2004, 04:55 PM
does that mean Insanctus won't be allowed to release his port of the code?
TWTCommish
04-27-2004, 05:02 PM
Not necessarily. But I do think he's underestimating just what the port involves. He says it's just a matter of search-and-replace, but when I re-wrote vB Glossary to work with vB 3, it was more than that. Certain functions need to be renamed...others are flat-out gone. Navbars are constructed differently. Etc.
If he wants to release his own version, he can. If and when I do it, I'll do it by devoting the time to it that it deserves, to ensure that it meets the high standards of the first one.

I have been speaking with someone who may be interested in developing the quiz with vB integration like the original hack, but may be looking to sell the final product for a small fee for all of his work. Would anyone be interested in this? If so, what type of cost do you think is reasonable?
I have a quiz on my site, but want to get one like this up ASAP. Although I would like the original developer to do it, please understand that I am hesitatnt to wait a couple of months and not be sure it will ever be released.

This is a really nice hack. I've added it but am trying to fine tune it. I've just spent about 3 hours reading through this thread and trying the different suggestions for getting the hack to do what I'd like.
I've figured out one thing that was not successfully answered in the thread and would like to share the information.
This is for how to add an image to a quiz question. The various fixes already suggested didn't work for me (ie. changing the View Images option in the control panel to "yes", using the img vbcodes to insert the image (just got a link when I did that), using html code (didn't work because my board doesn't accept html so I just got the code, no image) and then finally Chris's suggestion for making one forum on the board accept html and then using that forum number in the quiz.php code. That is actually the way I got it to work but the original information was incorrect. Post numbers 548, 549 and 551 outline the problem and suggested fix.
The suggestion was to change this code....
$quiz[description] = bbcodeparse($quiz[description]);
to this....
$quiz[description] = bbcodeparse($quiz[description], X);
(where X is the number of a forum on your board that accepts html...I set my managment forum (number 13) to accept html since only only admins have access to it)
anyway, the correct change should be to find this code in quiz.php....
$question[questiontext] = bbcodeparse($question[questiontext]);
and change it to this....
$question[questiontext] = bbcodeparse($question[questiontext], X);
Again, replacing X with the number of a forum on your board which accepts html. The reason this works and the other didn't....your image is in the text of the question, not the description of the quiz!
Anyway, this worked like a charm for me and I can now add images to quiz questions using html so I hope it helps others as well.
IMPORTANT EDIT: read on a few posts to see how to accomplish image insertion using VBCODE instead of html (even if your previous vbcode didn't work)!!!!!
Emmy2
05-14-2004, 04:57 AM
One other important note...
If you also want the image to show up on the results page (instead of the html code showing) you need to also do the same fix on the $result[questiontext] line.

LOL, you caught me off-guard! I'm still fiddling with my Quiz Center and have a lot of wonky display (haven't released it to my members yet) but give me a day or two and I'll set up a quiz and a test user account if anyone wants to have a look.
Emmy2

STOP THE PRESSES!!
There is another way to do this without using html!!!
I just kept thinking about the process....what the change in code was essentially doing was telling the system to parse the question text field just like it parses text in the forum specified (in my case forumid 13). So, because I enabled html in forum 13 it would parse any html I entered in the quiz question, and hence display my images.
BUT, I got to thinking......maybe the problem with using the vbcodes (in my case using vbcodes didn't work...I just got the image url as a link) was because it wasn't told what forum to mimic for parsing vbcodes. In other words.....if I have vbcode enabled in forum 13 and I tell it to mimic forum 13 (by replacing the X in the previous code) and then I USE vbcode in the quiz question will it work? The answer is YES!!!! I tried it! (so actually right now, I can use both html and vbcodes to insert images....unless I remove the html permissions for forum 13).
So for anyone who can't get images to show up in quiz questions using vbcode (ie. you get a link instead of an image) all you need to do is tell it to mimic one of your forums that has vbcode enabled (all of mine do, so any forum number will work) and then use VBCODE to insert your images!!!
I prefer this method as I'm always hesitant to enable html anywhere, even for other mods/admins.
Where's the happy dancing emoticon??? :p

ok, this is very very rough but I've put a quiz up on my site that uses images (the first image is posted using html, the second using vbcodes...so you can see both work with the modification). I've also created a test account for anyone who wants to log in to view the quiz.
I'm putting the information inside code tags so I only get vbulletin traffic....also, I will remove the test account after a bit so if you miss the trial period you'll have to register to the site.
The test account is....
username: vbulletin
password: vbtest
Address for a quiz using images....
http://bonanzaworld.net/forums/quiz.php?s=&quizid=6
I'm sure I could do a lot more with the code and tags (like centering the image etc.) but this is just a rough mock-up.

My brain is still working here.....
I wonder if it's possible to use images in the ANSWER fields. For example, the question is "Which of the pictures below is the winkey smiley?" and then the four choices are pictures ....

- :(
And respondents choose the right picture by clicking the radio button next to it. Seems doable, will check it out.

I really love this script and am having fun setting it up for my members to use.
Chris (or anyone if you can help) is it possible to display how many questions are in a quiz on the Recently Added Quizzes page (along with the title and description information), and on the quizid page (where it lists top scorers)? So instead of say, 9, it would say 9/10? I think I saw this on someone else's quiz page here. Right now the only place the number of questions shows up is on the Results page when it tells you you got 9 out of 10 (90%) correct. I tried a few things (just inserting the $question_count variable I found on the results page on those other pages but it didn't work....also tried $quiz[question_count] but that didn't work either....maybe cuz I'm just guessing here :p).
Is there a way to do this? Any help much appreciated!

I've got another question about vbquiz. I used the add-on below so my users can leave comments on quizzes....I have 2 questions though....one, the comments entered are displayed from oldest to newest....is there a way to have them display from newest to oldest? (essentially the opposite of what I have in the forums, but it would seem to work better for the quizzes to have the most recent comments at the top). Second, the comments just pile up infinitely...ie. they don't ever go onto a second page. Not that I'm expecting LOTS of comments on the quizzes but if over time I accumulated 40 or 50 comments that's a lot to display on one page. Anything that can be done for that?
Any help appreciated.

Yes. After a brief break to attend to some other things, I've begun working on this again in the last couple of days. Most of the work has revolved around creating the new quiz templates, which are mostly finished, but still need some work. The basic core of the script is done, and has been for a couple of weeks; you can create quizzes, users can take them, and see their results. Most of rhe work left falls under the following headings:
Fine-tuning (and reworking parts of) the admin script
Modifying and eventually finalizing the default quiz templates
Making the final decision as to which features to include with the original, standard release of the hack
Two things that have not yet begun are the integration into the phrase system (shouldn't take long), and the installation script.
My plan is to sell this initially, given the fact that it has required a larger amount of work than most hacks, and a great deal of original coding. It is possible that, sometime down the line, a scaled-down free version will be released.
I'll be working on it more this week, and weekend, and likely contacting those interested in purchasing it sometime next week. Meanwhile, if anyone else is interested, please post in this thread, or PM me, and I'll update you personally when the script is ready for use.

I'm not really sure what the question means, to be honest.
As for ETA...it depends on too many other things. If this were all I did with my time, it'd have been done a couple weeks ago. If my other responsibilities keep me busy, it could be another week and a half to two weeks. If not, maybe by the end of the week. I'm not sure yet. will there be quizzes where you can answer with a text box instead of an option?

will there be quizzes where you can answer with a text box instead of an option?No; way too complicated, for now. There'd be tons of issues to deal with...capitalization, spelling. Basically, to work realistically it'd have to give the admin the ability to list multiple answers which would be acceptable (IE: if the question was "Who was the 21st President of the United States?", it'd never do to have the answer be "Chester A. Arthur" -- you'd need to make Arthur, Chester Arthur, Chester A Arthur, and Chester A. Arthur all acceptable).
So, it's do-able, but that's more likely to be in a future release, along with a few other ambitious ideas.

No, because, as I mentioned, almost any text-based user input will have many possible variations, all of which could conceivably be "right." Also, the answer table and temporary answer tables would have to be modified, and the function which grades the quiz would need to be reworked, too. Sadly, it's just not as simple as it sounds. If it was, I probably would've done it already.

Cool. I noticed a timer for a question. Will the hack only allow setting time by question, or will there be a feature to set a time limit for the entire quiz?Not directly, but sort of. The hack will allow you to set a default limit with each quiz, and then a specific limit for each question. If you give the quiz a limit of 10, the user will have 10 seconds to answer each question...but if you enter a limit for a specific question, that time will override the quiz's limit.
Time limits for the entire quiz are a little trickier (I'm not the JavaScript maven I'd like to be), but among the possibilities for future versions.

Yeah, I see what you mean. That's beyond the scope of this particular hack. A pretty sizable portion of it would have to be re-written to work that way. As it stounds now many portions of the hack rely on set numbers and the like. If I were to create a hack like that, it'd probably be off on it's own.
Anyway, I've finished all the major issues I can think of with this hack, and have begun some light testing. Unless the testing uncovers some major problems (unlikely), it should be done by the end of the week.

}

oh and will users be able to add quizzes? or will it still be mods only?
According to this post by Chris (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=525293&postcount=891):
And yes, the new, commercial version will have a form through which users can submit quizzes, and will be subject to approval from the admin.
Chris, I am soooo psyched for this! Quizzes have been very popular on my site, and I'm thrilled to see that vb3 will have its own version soon, especially by the original creator. I hope it's not too expensive, 'cause me = poor, but I'll be happy to support you for all the hard work you've been putting into it.
One thing I haven't noticed yet (it might be earlier in the thread, my apologies for not reading too far back): will you include the add-on where people can see the newest added quizzes and/or the top quiz winners on forumhome or a nonvb page? 'Cause that one rocks. :)

In that case, yeah, it can be done...but I imagine you'd need different templates not only for each result, but for each quiz, too. It's not quite as simple as that one statement, since the script supports more than one quiz.
i just realised the only reason i been waiting on this is for the store integration, is that as standard and if not, would you be willing to add it for an additional fee?I think I'd be available for that, yeah. I've got another person quasi-testing this. I'm confident that any bugs left are minor, and mostly cosmetic. I should be releasing this tomorrow; I'll start a new thread and post the link to it here, as well as PM those who asked to be notified of updates.
In regards to kira's questions about that plugin; yes, I think I can whip something up. I'd like to release the hack first, though, and then release the add-on in that thread (no charge, of course...that'd be gouging). But it shouldn't be any problem to release something relatively simple to display a recent quiz or the hardest quiz on the forum main page.

When I was running this with vB2, I had this integrated with my own points system. :)

I look forward to doing the same with the vB3 version. :)

No, as I stated before (I believe), I won't be including integration with other hacks in the standard release; wouldn't really be "standard" if I did. I'm open to certain modifications after the hack's release (today, hopefully), and available for hire if the modifications are particularly significant or complicated, but at this point I'd really just like to get the basic script polished and released.

A couple of major bugs:
1) A user submitting a quiz does not pass his or her description.
2) When editing a quiz, you erase the user's userid.
A couple of suggestions:
1) Ability to upload image by user.
2) Ability for user to set time limit.

Okay, to fix the edit quiz username being deleted problem,
In admin_quiz.php,
Find:
if ($quiz[image] && $image_name && !$replaceconfirm) {
$author = get_userid($author);
Replace with:
$author = get_userid($author);
if ($quiz[image] && $image_name && !$replaceconfirm) {

To add the standard editor templates to the cache, and saving many queries when a user submit a quiz, change the actiontemplate code to this in quiz.php:
// pre-cache templates used by specific actions
$actiontemplates = array(
'addquiz' => array(
'editor_clientscript',
'editor_jsoptions_font',
'editor_jsoptions_size',
'editor_smilie_wysiwyg',
'editor_smilie_standard',
'editor_smiliebox',
'editor_smiliebox_category',
'editor_smiliebox_row',
'editor_smiliebox_straggler',
'editor_smiliemenu_category',
'editor_smiliemenu_smilie',

Fixed the WYSIWYG description problem for user submit - before, all user submitted descriptions were blank.
In quiz.php.
Find:
require_once('./includes/functions_editor.php');
Replace with:
$vboptions['allowvbcodebuttons'] = '1';
require_once('./includes/functions_editor.php');
Then find:
require_once('./includes/functions_wysiwyg.php');
$quiz_description = convert_wysiwyg_html_to_bbcode($_POST['WYSIWYG_HTML']);
Replace with:
// require_once('./includes/functions_wysiwyg.php');

To allow members to submit time limit is easy to do too.
Only template mods needed, since the code is already in quiz.php
In quiz_add template,
Find:
$vbphrase[category]:<br />
<select name="quiz_catid">
$catbits
</select>
</td>
</tr>
Below add:
<tr>
<td width="100%" class="smallfont"><br />
Time limit per question in seconds:<br />
<input type="text" class="bginput" name="quiz_timelimit" size="5" maxlength="5" tabindex="1" />
</td>
</tr>
Then in quiz_add_questions template, find:
<input type="hidden" name="quiz_description" value="$quiz_description">
Below add:
<input type="hidden" name="quiz_timelimit" value="$quiz_timelimit">
Done!

1) is it me or, no matter how many seconds u put as per limit, if you don't answer due to time limit, quiz thinks you answered right?!?!
2) do you people get this "Could not find phrase 'quiz_already_taken'" when trying to redo a quiz already completed?
3) we're only 89 registered members. I don't know the 89, may be just 5 or 6 people, but i have my quiz set up so you can only do quizzes once. Now, a quiz reports it has been completed...105 times!!!
Even if the switch would not be working correctly, it would also mean ALL of the users did the quiz or most of them did it twice!!

Hi TWT. You would know best, that's for sure. I was ASSUMING that guests could play it. You have cleared that up. Sorry about that. I sure don't want to talk bad about a great hack. I just assumed that because there was no usergroup settings in AdminCP that this was the case.
However, I run my site on a series of semi-complex promotions. And I don't want every registered member to be able to play.
I want only three groups to be able to play:
- Administrators
- Moderators
- Registered Users (who have posted)
I guess this is the jist of what I am asking about.

Thank you
