Recently, we have been doing alot of work on the site, and have had to close the forums several times to do so. We try and do this when we have the least members online, and of course post announcments as often as we can, and give as much notice as we can, but we still wind up "bumping" members, sometimes in the middle of posting (doncha hate that?). So, I was wondering if anyone could come up with a hack, if it doesn't exist already, that would place an option in the Admin Control Panel so an admin could generate a "We will be closing in XX minutes" pop up message, like a PM pop up almost, to all members online? Is this even possible?

Maybe...in your header, you can get this CGI script that adds a timer...have this timer count down to warn your members, put this in your forum header so it will be in EVERY page...

Then when the timer goes to 0, they know that they can't post ;)

just insert your message inside header template via Admin CP. Everyone will be able to see it then ;)

You dont need to count down, you can use a text "Board will be closed at 4.20 PM".

And another suggestion not relating to your question: You can mirror your site to your localhost and work on your new projects there. So you wouldnt need to close your board so often. Nakkid has a tutorial in Hints/Tips section for this, check it out.
