I have seen a persistent Mark as Read, but what about an automatic Mark as Read? The difference being, not only does it utilize database tracking instead of the default use of a cookie, but it doesnt require a user to physically click the Mark as Read button.
This is similar to what would occur if a member reads a new thread. If they read the thread, they are not required to mark it as read in order to make it reset; it just occurs.
With an automatic mark as read for forums, they would not be required to mark the forum as read; it just resets itself as read once all new posts within the forum have been read.

Good idea! I want this too!
And i have small suggestion.
If user don't read any forum or posts and exit from vB, unread posts not mark as read.
When user return to board it will see all unread posts & forums.
Please make this :)

In fact, it would even be ok to make the forum new post indicator reset if the user simply enters the forum, regardless if they read all new posts or not. You have to figure, if they enter the forum, they are going to read the new posts they want to read and leave the others. So this would negate the need to read all posts in order to reset the indicator.

Yes I agree!! I MUST needed feature!! However, I would say the "Mark as Read due to just entering" would be even more frustrating. as some forums have several active threads, and if I can't get to them, I defo don't want the whole forum being marked read. ONLY if viewed I say.

Consider what would be required to dynamically track the read status of every message posted on your forums for each user.

Well coming from a YaBB environment, one of the things that my users liked was the fact that read/unread messages were stored on the server, and thefor they could read from any computer- anywhere....
The other thing is that I's like to see the mark as read features work like this:
1. When you enter a forum from the main page, if the forum was marked as new, it is now marked as read.
2. When you enter a thread, if the thread was new, it is now marked as read.
This was very useful in a forum environment because when people have a varying level of computer savvy, the simpler you make it the better. The additional ability to store the read/unread information on the server makes the loss (or absence) of your cookie a minor issue.
This is just how I feel....
Were this feature (or hack) available, I kid you not.... my system would be "perfect" for our uses.
It's the only thing lacking in my eyes.

Nobody wants to do this? :(
In the Persistent Mark Forum Read (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=32091&page=7&pp=15), someone said it was easy to change this hack so it'd mark forums read automatically, can someone who knows PHP have a look?
Would be greatly appreciated; this is the only feature lacking in vB!

Same here. My users love VB, but they don't like the way threads are updated, or not updated I should say. I miss this as well.

I agree! I would install this hack in a SECOND if it were available.
Have there been any updates since February?
Bruce
EDIT: I'm going to look around a bit more and see if something else hasn't developed.
