View Full Version : World Map ?

Bad time to request this as this an extensive hack, and vB3 is coming...
But our members want a map of the world, showing locations of where members live, I guess based on whatever they provide in their (custom)profiles. I really haven't got a clue where to start with this kind of thing.
If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears. That includes other scripts that do something like this.
Thanks a bunch :)

this would be a fantastic hack... i would love this... it could involve the vbstats hack...
have a world map with parts of the map divided up... into the countries... and have a flag in each country and next to the flag would be the no.of members from each country... then if users clicked on the flag it cud show where they lived...
i doubt if it would be extensively hard to do...,,, im sure some1 cud do it ... (i hope the do lol)
good idea d00d
Wow... Good idea but I myself I am not to sure how this would work... maybe just something like can the flags hack installed and then off of that have areas on a map as small images

Hmm, my old flag hack :D
I still have version "zero dot something", still active on one forum as a matter of fact. But I wouldn't know how or what to do with the current version. Not to mention that all hail and glory goes to AJR who made the original thing into the real living hack it is now. It's his project now, I should think :)
But it's certainly something to consider...

That would be quite difficult actually. You'd have to have the mother of all image maps to make this work. You'd have to do an image map for each flag as it relates to the map. At least that's what I would imaging that it'd take.
Having just completed a series of image maps for the world (http://www.interpug.com/find/), I can't even begin to think how this could be done. LOL

hmm...make it using flash (verson 5 ^ (I think) can integrated into PHP) and throw some PHP codeing into it, and put some key marks on the map of it, then have it call about each memeber's locations which puts a dot on the map then the users can click on the dot and see all the members that live in that area.....wow, that's easyer said then done
Kind of like:
Making Vb have AI: Well first get some php and code it into the vb scripts with some database stuff and then get yourself a human mind and turn that into code... then once that is done put in on your site and BAM! AI :)

It's been a while since anyone commeted on this... but I threw together somethign very simple a while back (http://www.mkrealms.com/forum/membermap.php). this is only for the US, at it runs on a zipcode->Longitude/Latitude layout. I tried to do one for the wordl.. but unfortunately.. I was unable to find the information I needed to pinpoint (literally) my members on a map. Also, as the area gets larger.. the distortion is pretty bad. If anyone would like to tackle this project, I would love to help... but more information is definately needed.

I initially hacked this for personal use... but I'll see about cleaning up the code, and releasing it to the public sometime. The current version is for the United states only.. as it pulls the longitude and latitude from the user's Zip Code (Which is gathered with Registration or through the User CP). As I mentioned before.. a "world" version is currently not possible because I don't have the geocode data to support it (really wish I did though).

pattox2k1, I would be interested as to what you have. I have experience with flash, and think that may be an interesting approach to things. I remember a while back (2 yearsr)? FlashKit put out a flash map that would store the location a member clicked on map. While that may not be as accurate as what I've made..it does open it up to be a "world map". Could you email that to Typhon@MKRealms.com ? Thanks!

Bumping this.. because I would like a world map, too! I envision 'virtual pins' in it where the members live.

I would suggest doing this by continent, it might be a whole lot easier...

Yeah, 100 members from the Netherlands and you won't even see it's surrounding borders anymore. :D
