View Full Version : VB eIRC chat intergration hack 1.0
andrew67
04-13-2002, 10:00 PM
VERSION 2.0 - UPDATED FOR VB3.0.7
Now Even Easier To Install!!! - Enjoy :)
NOTE: VERSION 2 is for VBulleting 3.0.7, VERSION 1 is for 2.2.x
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE CORRECT VERSION...
1 x new template
1 x file upload
1 x template edit (Optional I guess, you could put the link to your chatroom anywhere you like....)
P.S. You will need to add the templete to each style your site uses and edit to suit...
---------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a very very easy hack to install and must be one of the easiest and best free ways to add chat to your forums. This hack uses Eirc java applets to connect to World IRC servers. There is no need to sign and compile Eirc yourself or even host it or a irc server, simply follow these instructions and you will have FREE, full, IRC chat on your forums in under 2 minutes... :D
For a demo, checkout the chat running here at vbullettin.org ( https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/chat.php? ) as it uses the same java applets and basicly is the same as this hack...
Once you have installed the hack pop into #austech and say hello... :)
Thanks & Enjoy...
Although Version 1.0 for VB2.2.x is still working and also still available, I DO NOT offer support for it...

I would love to, but as I said in previous post, to connect to other servers you will need to sign & compile Eirc yourslef or host the irc server on same machine as your webserver. I cannot sign & compile the applets then distribute as you wouldn't be able to change some of the settings once signed and compiled.

Your path seems likes it is wrong, make sure the line in index.php:
chdir('/home/virtual/site2/fst/var/www/html/forums/');
points to your main forum install directory.

04-15-2002, 04:51 AM
Just added this to the install file:
The explanations for the eirc template configuration options:
* mainbg
Most components background color. Defaults to system settings.
* mainfg
Most components foreground color. Defaults to system settings.
* textbg
Text area and field background color. Defaults to system settings.
* textfg
Text area and field foreground color. Defaults to system settings.
* selbg
Selected text background color. Defaults to system settings.
* selfg
Selected text foreground color. Defaults to system settings.
* channel
What channel should be automatically opened when a connection is established.
* titleExtra
This is concatenated to the channel or user's name to form the window's title.
* username
What "user name" -sometimes called userid or ident- will be passed to the server. Defaults to vbulletin users usersname.
* realname
What "real name" will be passed to the server.
* nickname
What "nick name" will be put in the nick field at start up. If the character '?' is used somewhere in the VALUE field, it will be changed to
a random number by the client on load. Defaults to vbulletin users usersname.
* login (requires "nickname")
If it's set to anything but "0", it will try to establish a connection to the server on start up.
* spawn_frame
Whether to launch the main window on a separated frame, thus reducing the space needed by the Applet on the webpage and allowing the window
to be resized dynamically.
* frame_width
Sets the width used by the spawned frame.
* frame_height
Sets the height used by the spawned frame.

What cause I try and help someone with a problem I cop a earfull??? Oh no, I had to tell someone to chmod a file... oh my, its the end of the world... There was/is nothing wrong with the hack itself, it works fine and yes I tested it, I simply forgot a couple steps in the install docs.. sheesh sorry.
I've been hanging around this forum since it opened and maybe it's people's like you and your attitude around here when posting, which is slowing down the release of hacks. I for one will think twice before releasing anything again here, I had hoped sinced so many where after this hack and its was downloaded 30+ times in the first 12 hours of release, that I may have had more than 1 user thank me, but I guess this place has changed alot since vbulletin.com days. After reading some other hack threads on here, My next hack I may just keep to my little circle of friends and not release at all....

andrew67, Xiphoid asked a perfectly valid question, on perfectly valid grounds, yet you insult him and go off shouting stuff like "this place has changed a lot" and what not.
I won't miss it when you will think twice before releasing another hack. I can't say your attitude is likeable at all, and you admitted to having forgotten a few steps in the install. Nice going. Remind me not to look at your hacks until all problems are solved and people got it working, with proper instructions.

Andrew... allow me to be the voice of reason: Many of us were happy to see an EIRC integration hack come onto the scene and many of us don't see it as necessarily being a life and death issue if the hack doesn't work perfectly right out of the box.
However, the proper order of things is to place a new hack in Beta before you announce it as a full release. Even if the hack works flawlessly on your site, it is wise to put it into beta for a few days just to work out any kinks that may arise.
In this case, you obviously had to go back and re-address some issues with the documentation. Not a big deal, but there are always going to be people who want to bust your balls about this sort of thing. Having put this into beta would have given you that opportunity to work the kinks out with the users understanding that there might be problems in the release.
Putting a hack into beta before you release it to the public is just a smart practice to adhere to and, if done, gives you a basis to tell people to STFU whenever the whining begins. ;)
So don't let a few complaints spoil this for you. Keep releasing your work knowing that there are people who appreciate it, but follow through with a beta cycle first.
Floris

I do appriciate users publishing hacks, and I even like this one.
I was not even 'attacking' andrew, but mearly asking him why he didn't put it in beta if it isn't finished, and even his first. His reply was uncalled for and his behaviour is childish.
My intention is not to spoil anybody's fun and/or to jump on people who made their first hack. And it is not a life/death situation when someone makes an error. That is why you can reply to threads.

Ok, Sorry I didnt even notice the beta hack forum until now... I now understand this, and I apoligise for my tanty, its been a long weekend and after a few of the PM's I recieved and stuff I just let fly, I apoligise. I guess there is no point moving this to beta hacks now as it seems to be all ok now.. I will release my next hack in beta hacks forum.

Thank you for your apology and I am happy to hear you are not removing the hack. Just because you had a little argument with one of the 10k members of this forum.
I also see no need to remove it, since the flaws have been fixed by you already during the last day.
I normally do not even reply to PM's of most users. If the PM is about the hack, they can post it in the thread. *doh* :)

Y'know, if this is all not such a big deal ("a mistake") why are you overreacting so much?
The thing is, you reacted wildly to Xiphoid when he was being perfectly polite to you. So don't go talking to people as if you know all about gratitude and all that jazz.
There's plenty of people who really appreciate you making this hack for them, but as with everything in life, there will always be some people commenting on you/your work. That's why the beta forum exists, in this case.

is there a way to make this hack work like an instant messenger with a link next to users online. Pop up messaging would be a nice feature without having to use the PM style reply option. A simple .. hey you there.. type message is a pain in the PM feature.
Chazman
A lot of people have asked if there is a way to use this with IRC servers other than the one included. Well there is...
Just get another IRC compatible Java client. I pasted the code from another client into the template I created, left everything else the same and it works perfectly!
This is the one I'm using.
http://www.valinor.sorcery.net/clients/snirc.html
Thanks for the hack which got me going on this!
wooolF[RM]
04-15-2002, 05:45 PM
well... thanx for the tip... but I have checked and snirc doesn't have the same possibilities as eIRC does... and design sucks big time... :/
That was just one example, I don't see any reason you couldn't use any java based IRC client. We provide SNIRC on our board to try and force people who complain about the lack of features to use a "real" IRC client like mIRC.

andrew76, does this applet use a lot of server resources? I was alway led to believe chat applets are pretty server resource intensive and most hosting companies don't allow you to even install them for the very reason I assume.
I have a dedicated server but my site is very busy so i still have to watch what's going on behind the scenes :) Also I assume this doesn't use any db resources once it's loaded? This hack could possibly help to release some stress from my off-topic forum which most users seems to use as a chat substitute.

Nope, shouldn't use much, if any of your sever resources, as the java applets are loaded from the world irc webserver and users are connected through their server. Before you ask, yes I asked permission to use their applets in this hack.. See http://www.worldirc.org/chatself.php for more info on world irc.. :)

Sorry, but I am the wrong person to ask, I am also a Java n00b and I have had no joy in compiling the Java yet, myself.. :) I am still trying and when and if I get iit done, I will add the instructions and update the hack... The hack works fine if you leave it on the default server settings and world IRC is actually quite a good server and the IRCop's are quite friendly and helpfull.. Aswell as their server taking the load and not yours, another bonus... Less bandwidth and resources you will lose.. You considered staying with them??
For now though if you really dont want to use world IRC, have a go yourself and checkout the following sites for more info on compiling and signing the Eirc applets.

Do you think world IRC would mind? Do I need to ask someone permission? Is there a procudure to keep a room open, or does it just get created when one person enters it?

Nope, no need to ask permission. I have already and they also publicly display the url and code for eirc (see: http://www.worldirc.org/chatself.php ) and after hanging out and speaking to alot of the IRCops they are hoping and quite looking forward to more traffic on their servers... The decent thing to do however is once your room is up is too maybe recommend your users use mIRC instead, that way the server isnt too overloaded by the thousands of java users... Thats what I do anyway...
BTW In the week or so I have been on world IRC there hasn't been a single netsplit and I had over 40 users last night using java.. Their servers seem very fast and very reliable...

Sorry didn't notice that question when I posted my last reply.. To create a permanent room and a access list to enable auto ops you will need to first register your nick, then register your room once you've done that you start to add users to the access list.
For information on registering nicks with the name server look here:
http://www.worldirc.org/serv-nick.php
For information on registering channels with the channel server look here:
http://www.worldirc.org/serv-chan.php
If you require more help go to #help they are a friendly bunch who will explain your thinking about moving servers and everything and they will gladly help you get it all sorted.....

04-17-2002, 02:02 AM
Ok, I might give that a shot. So how is the room created and how does it stay up. And who has ops powers?
Reading the FAQ (http://www.worldirc.org/faq.php) now. :)
andrew67
04-17-2002, 02:49 AM
To make the room stay open you need to call the channel sever thingy called "X" into your room and it stays there 24/7 enforcing bans and giving ops ect. You decide who get ops or not and what else they can do in the room by giving different access levels.. I'm not too upto scratch on the commands on this server as Im used to Austnet (where I moved from) but if worse comes to worse, pop into my room #Austech and ask Tokebuzz (IRC GURU), Pariah (IRCop) or Insane (me) and one of us should be able to help out with any probs. or questions..

Cool, Either way works so I guess take your pick, only thing is with mine any changes to the settings are made in the template not the php file... I will try release a update this weekend with the bug fix for the logo and removal of the "engine" template..
Slynderdale
04-17-2002, 10:28 AM
you could change every thing in the template with mine too, and you can edit how the whole page looks and set up with that one template, you could have it look like your normal forum page with a chat or make something completly different for it, all mine takes it a small php and 1 template to tun the whole thing and set every thing up, i also have a X bot too so the irc chat is always open and you dont have to worry about some one getting admin power
andrew67
04-17-2002, 10:39 AM
Well it doesn't do that the way you posted it, all the config is in the php file. My update will also have 1 php and 1 template instead of 2, a who's chatting now type deal (if I can work out the bugs) and the instructions on how to compile Eirc. for use on your own web/irc server.
Also no offence, but so what if you have X-bot, why make it sound like it is part of you hack? Its a bot in your chat room... What does that have to do with the hack? Anyone can have X-bot, its simply the channel server as I explained in a previous post.

<?php

require('./global.php');
eval("dooutput(\"".gettemplate('forumchat')."\");");
?>
is what you put in the php file the rest is a template

ok i added a little update to my version, if an account has spaces in it, it will only use the first part of the name not the whole name so i made a little fix that removes the space. If your useing my version change:
<?php
error_reporting(7);
require('./global.php');
eval("dooutput(\"".gettemplate('forumchat')."\");");
?>
to:
<?php
error_reporting(7);
require('./global.php');
$chatusername=str_replace(" ","",$bbuserinfo[username]);
eval("dooutput(\"".gettemplate('forumchat')."\");");
?>
now in the forumchat template find:
$bbuserinfo[username]
and replace it with:
$chatusername
it apears twice so change both and there, when a user goes to the chat it removes any spaces from there name

Thanks for this hack, I found that if I was to install this in another directory say called /chat/index.php/3
I would have to upload my forum images into the chat directory, so I renamed the index.php to chat.php and uploaded it into the forum directory without having to upload any images and it works fine,

Hi,
A quick intro. I am brand newbie to vBulletin and paid for my license tonight. I have tried to install this but it won't work.
The page just comes up blank and if I change the path testing various possiblies it mostly give me the not found error. Any ideas? I am running vBulletin on a win2k machine, might this be the issue?
I would really appreciate any help you could give.

To solve the error in the login, in the chat template change the line
<param name="username" value="$bbuserinfo[username]">

<param name="username" value="javauser">
or put your site name or something there instead of "javauser"....

What exactly does this do? The reason I ask is it my chat works great for my admin name and for other's so far. But, I have a regular user account so I can view the board as a regular user. When I try to chat with my "Mike's Dad" as my user name, it first gives me a user name taken, then all subsequent nick changes result in the error message given above, bad user name. I am going to try what you said above, but what exactly is the problem? I'm just interested.

Some characters can not be used in usernames. I don't know about the requirements for this particular chat, but if a name contains invalid characters then you will not get into chat.
Well that was something I overlooked, the apostraphe is invalid. Any suggestions on how to work the apostraphe? Can these be masked out or something? Thanks in advance, if all else fails I can edit members user names and make a note when registering not to use ' in the user name. Currently out of about 450, only 14 member names have the invalid charachter.
[edit] I figured out how to strip the apostraphe using the str_replace, but now I seem to get the apostraphe stripped and it only uses the first part of the user name, ie. Mike's Dad is Mikes. Here is my chat.php
<?php
error_reporting(7);
require('./global.php');
$chatusername=str_replace(" ","_",$bbuserinfo[username]);
$chatusername=str_replace("'","",$bbuserinfo[username]);
eval("dooutput(\"".gettemplate('forumchat')."\");");
?>
I am using the the Sylverdale forumchat template with the chatusername replacements. Yes I am learning on the fly. ;)
wot-Mike
05-10-2002, 08:54 PM
Well, look at your code:
the first "$chatusername=..." line, what does this do? It looks at $bbuserinfo[username] (Mike's Dad), replaces each space with an underscore, and then stores the edited value in $chatusername (Mike's_Dad)
The second line again looks at $bbuserinfo[username] (Mike's Dad), removes each apostrophe, and the stores the edited value in $chatusername (Mikes Dad), overwriting the already existing value of Mike's_Dad :(
Since the first value was overwritten, $chatusername now has a value of "Mikes Dad".
Your chat only accepts the first part, before the space, meaning "Mikes Dad" will be logged in as "Mikes".
Back to the drawing board ;)

Does this hack allow you to connect to different IRC servers? I tried the demo and it wouldn't let me. Was I doing something wrong?
I spent eternity trying to make this work, without succes.
It wasn't until I took the index.php from the chat dir, renamed it chat.php and put it in my forum root dir, that I made it work.
I hope someone else might benefit from doing the same - and that someone smarter than me can possibly tell me if there are any problems with that procedure.

If this is already released, could someone please direct me to the thread as I can't find it.
Now I installed this, and what I am hoping for is a way to send an invite to members that are browsing the boards and not in the chat. Also, if there is a way for the users in chat to be displayed on the forum index page, so they can see who is in before they even join?
That would be real sweet!
Thanks for your time, :)

No, it's just that XP no longer supports java as a download, and as you said it does not give any info on where to get it from.
The chat room used on this site uses java, so I posted a suggestion saying that the link I give you a moment ago should be added to the "you don't have java" message :)

Did anyone ever figure out how to compile and sign this? I'd really like a little help on this, or a quick rundown/link. I'd like to log on to another server. Anyone? :confused:
Download Java SDK v1.31.04 and the applet source from the eirc homepage at Sourceforge. Make sure you also download the libs and extract it to your eirc dir. Then run build.pl if on *Nix or build.bat if on Windows from shell. After the build is complete use jarsigner to sign the 2 files that are created in the build dir.

Ok, I got all the stuff, but I'm quite confused now. Do I need a private key to sign the jars? I thought keys were only used for SSL connections. Can I sign without a key? I've been reading up on this (http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/docs/tooldocs/win32/jarsigner.html) site, and it seems a bit more in depth than I'd originally gathered. Can you elaborate a bit on this procedure? :confused:
Use keygen utility to generate a cert to sign the applet. I'll write up a tutorial on how to do this and post it up later tommorrow.

That's exactly what I'm trying to do here(not that server though).....it has to be "signed and compiled".
Thanks AWS! :D I can't wait to get this set up on another server! I'm sure it can't be that difficult, if I only knew how. The only tutorials I've found seem to assume you already know something about this. :cross-eyed:
What you need:
Java SDK 1.3 (1.4 is current but the applet source won't compile on it. You might not need to compile the applet.)
Jarsigner
Keytool (these tools are part of Java SDK)
How to sign it:
Create a directory to work in. Mine is called j-sign.
Make sure java is in your path.
CD into the working directory.
Now we want to create a cert to sign the applet.
at prompt type this, change any of the bracketed vars to what you want:
keytool -genkey -keystore [ whatever.store ] -alias [ yourcertname ]
Answer the questions that it asks and when you give it a password write it down so you don't forget it.
This will create your cert, now we just have to make it ready for signing.
At prompt:
keytool -export -keystore [ whatever.store ] -alias [ yourcertname ] -file [ yourcertname.cer ]
Make sure the name you give for the file has .cer extension
OK. You got your cert. There should be a file in the j-sign directory called yourcertname.cer.
Now cd into the directory where you untarred or if on Windows unzipped the eirc source and libs. You shouldn't have to compile the source. There are 2 jar files already compiled that you can use. Copy the .jar files to your j-sign directory. CD back to that dir.
Now lets sign them:
jarsigner -keystore [ whatever.store ] EIRC.jar [ yourcertname ]
You will be prompted for the password for your store, the pw you gave when you created the cert, type it in and in a second or 2 the applet will be signed to connect to any IRC server.
Repeat the step above to sign EIRC-gfx.jar and move the signed files to your docroot and test it out.
Remove the brackets when you do this.
The applet will now work with any IRC server that you choose to connect to. Just change the vars of the applet html page.
To see a working version go here (http://visualbasicforum.com/chat.php).

Ok, I did everything step by step, but still can't seem to make it work on any other server. I even tried running it on my server, but all I get is "can't resolve...." whatever server name I try. I looked at the source on the example you posted, and it's running on the localhost, right? That's not working for me either. :(
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I really feel stupid for asking this, but how do you set up your own chat room and how do you pick a server to do it on? I've never even attempted anything like this before and I know nothing about IRC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
SloppyGoat

I'm not much on irc either, so don't feel stupid. Registering a channel on a server is relatively easy, but this applet thing is confusing the hell out of me.
Normally, it'd be something like this...on say dalnet:
/chanserv info [#channelname] - This will check to be sure the channel name you want to register is not already registered. For example: /chanserv info #newbies. If ChanServ returns information on the channelname, it is already registered and you need to choose another one.
/join #channelname - This will create the channel you want to register. For example: /join #whatever.
/chanserv register [#channelname] [password] [description] - This will register your channelname with the selected password and a description of what the channel is about. The description is not important, but must be included in the command. For example: /chanserv register #whatever password Chat Room Description.
But you have to do alot more (obviously) to get EIRC to run on another server. :ermm:

Thank you very much. Now, where do I run that and what do I run it with? (I told you I knew nothing whatsoever about this. :))
SloppyGoat
12-24-2002, 03:52 AM
That's what you'd type into mIRC or any other irc client. If you log into dalnet, those commands will work. They vary from server to server though. It's best to view the command list on the server's homepage....if you want to join a different one.

I don't know what the problem is. Maybe there is something wrong with the eirc applet.
Build the source. If you are on *Nix go to shell and cd into the eirc source directory. then run build.pl
./build.pl
If you are on windows open the build.bat file and at the top add the path to java there are also 3 other .bat files that you will need to that to. After you do that just double click build.bat.
This will create a dir called build. Go into it and grab the 2 applets it created and then sign them. If that doesn't do it then get back to me and I'll send you my applet which I know works.
Sorry I missed you when you stopped into our channel. I could have helped you if I was there.

I am running W2K. I used the jars that where already there. I figured they should be the right ones, since I dnlded the Windoze zip. Hell, I don't know. I'm lost now. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. :confused:
It seems that whatever server you connect to has to have the jars on their localhost. But I guess, if this is done right, I should be able to direct the applet to use my jar files and still use a different server value? Is that how this is supposed to work? Maybe I should try your files and see if that works, since you seem to know what you're doing. LOL :cross-eyed:
Are you running an irc server? I guess you have to be to have your own server value, eh? I don't really care to run my own irc, if I don't have to. Let me know if I have the concept all wrong. My brain is starting to hurt. :lick:
[edit]
Well, I actually dnlded your jar files (by entering the path to them in my browser), and I still get the same thing....so I don't think it's the files.

Dude, I don't mean to sound rude, but you need to go back a few pages and read. What you're asking is what we're discussing right now. So far, it's not working for me either, but I did the research before I started asking questions. ;) AWS is trying to help.

Yeah, if you're talking about worldirc, you have to go read their procedure for doing that. It's a bit of a damn hassle, IMO. You have to register it with their goofy commands, then get three people to approve it within so much time. I still haven't done it. It seems pretty stupid, just to register a crippled irc channel. :mad:

can this hack be placed at the foot of the main forum page? or would it slow it down? TIA

I tried it. Yes, it slows it down. It takes awhile for it to load from worldirc.org. Actually, it seems to be slower than it's been ever. We don't even use it much anymore.

ok, to make this thing work, i had to do what a few people mentioned but also 1-2 things that others didn't mention. i had to rename the index.php file in the "chat" folder and move that into the main forum directory. then delete the "chat" folder since you dont need it. then i got an error stating something wasn't found. you have to get rid of the chdir in the "chat.php". other than those errors, this is a sweet hack. can u get sounds for eIRC?

So what should I type after chdir? Please let me know. I download the latest zip file and I want to know if there is anything else I need to modify since there are so many threads and I could not finish reading all of them.
