How's about a hack where if somebody types in a link and it gets parsed automatically into BB code (and then into HTML), that links that point to the same domain as the forums don't open in a new window?
You don't need a hack for this. Just create a new URL tag in your admin CP and specify no target for it. It will open it in the current window. The default target for the URL tag is: target="_blank"
Leave out the target directive. ;)

Yes, but I want external links to still open in the new windows, but local link to open in the same one.
Example: clicking a link at http://www.turtletips.com/forums/ that points to http://www.turtletips.com/somepage.php would open in the same window. At the same location, clicking a link to http://www.vbulletin.org/ would open in a new window.
