ok.. you know i like to snoop arround people's forums.. just to see how they do things and compare their graphic talent. i saw once c-prompt's forums and i got impressed about his photoshop skills... however i saw this today:

http://marvin.qwk.net/~cassvill/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=114

the owner of this forum pretends to be creator of this package.
there is only one way to prove it, the photoshop files. any artist will keep those files. so here it is my question:

c-prompt, who lies, you or him? leyt me know, i'm curious.
please do not take wrong this thread. i'm only curious. i dont acuse you of ripping.

Well, the board was online at April 6, YESTERDAY. So how the hell can c-prompt have those images on his site for along time ;)

that's my question to. the guy pretends to make them all. i'm not saying c-prompt is at fault. i say that the other guy stated he made all those graphs.

Ok. Let me explain. The Bonejangler is a member of C's forums and has created an awesome site www.banishedfaith.com and I doubt he would rip C's graphics but if he did he did and I am sure C spoke with him about it. So many people take C's stuff its not even funny.

Geez, I need to visit here more often. lol

Ok, originally his first version of this style was a copy of the old version of yaxay. The simple version. I said at vb.com that I didnt mind that one as it was very basic. Then however, I made all the new changes to yaxay with the funky category bars, and so on. Then I noticed he was offering a version 2 of this style. Which all he did was copy all the new things I added. At this point I was furious! I emailed him and he proceeded to tell me off saying I shouldnt have brought attention to him copying me cause now hes doing it just to make me mad.

He has no respect, and I have none for him. I requested him remove it and he didn't. He just now removed it because he see's posts like this.

I thank you guys for noticing. Its really annoying to be copied so blatantly. I have no problem with influencing people. But a direct copy is just sad. Especially to then offer it to download for free.

What really pisses me off is that he then proceeds to put down yaxays design saying anyone can do it, blah blah. But if its so lame and bad why did he need to copy it? Get a life and some originality.

btw from a legal view, i know its illegal to steal images and say they are my own, but if i would edit 1 pixel of the image then would it technicly become my own work?

i always save the .psd files to prove i'm the owner of the file. usually a little logo that i make can contain up 50layers. that's the trick to easy corect everything in photoshop. more layers, better-faster file. at least that is what i think. let me know your oppinion.

nakkid.

So what you are basically saying is that if I make an image in MS Paint, or something similar, and someone else makes the exact same image using Photoshop and a bunch of layers, not only would they not be ripping me, but I would infact be ripping them since I do not have the PSD file to 'prove' that I made the original?

... i'm used to work with photoshop. most of the graphic designers use photoshop to make website graphics. from my experience with other people, all of them save those files as "creator's proof". in my humble oppinion, i think is hard to make something profesionnal using microsoft paint. i might be wrong. :)

anyway, the idea i try to pull out is this: as long as you have a proof that you made that graph file, not copy-paste it, nobody can do something to you legally. let me know what do you think and please correct me if i'm wrong.

Just to clarify, you have to alter an image 80% to make it original.

So if took one of cprompts buttons, I would have to make a significant amt of changes to it (80%) to then call it my own.

So if he has three blue lines in his button, i would have to change the color, add more lines, shorten one, twirl the next, add a gradient, maybe a bevel and change its shape, and it wont be considered a rip.

As far as I remember, you cannot do anything from a legal standpoint unless you have an actual copyright. I sincerely doubt that anybody here wouls copyright an image, or even a whole vB style. The person might lose credibility, but you cannot sue them.

And as for MSPaint, the best example I can give is this (http://www.neo-entertainment.net/cgi-bin/index.pl?v4,updates,main,updates). Most of the layout there was made in MSPaint (I assume the banner wasn't), and the previous versions of the layout were too.

hehe this site is by far a rip :) http://stock.xxtax.gov.cn/bbs/index.php

Anyway, getting back to copyrighted images and that say you were to create a table heading image similar to C-promts, maybe different colours, similar shape, would that still be classed as a rip? as i have seen before someone complain of someone using gray buttons and calling them a rip. I am very interested in this a i am learning photoshop and i often take other peoples designs and see if i can create them with my skills. I don't then publish them but i like to see what i can do. Most of the time i don't come no where near close to them.

and i agree i think most people do you photoshop now adays because of the way you can get graphics looking

Any art work is automatically copyrighted upon its creation. An 'offical' copyright is mearly a note saying yes this person created this work on such and such date. Its not needed though.

An "official" copyright is what gives you the write to sue people if they steal it from you. Without an official copyright, the one you have to pay for, you will have a hard time explaining the court why it is wrong to steal your image.

I really don't understand why you would want to officially copyright a small image though. I doubt anybody would go further than repeatedly telling the ripper to take the image off or boycott them.

That board is funny because they didn't even bother changing certain key elements to cover up their tracks. If they were to change vbulletin.org to whatever their board is called, they could claim that it was inspired. I've already had things like that happen to me before. It angered me, but I could do nothing about it. Eventually the guy just took it off and I forgave him.
