What's up with the Multiple Attachments Hack!?

Ok, how come no one has done the multiple attachment hack? I have been lurking on this site for some time now and have seen this requested at least 50 times. :eek: Yes, I know about the one for sale... last time I checked it was going for $100 and was limited in its abilities. A bit unreasonable IMHO. :bandit:

Is it too difficult for you super hackers to do??? I don't get it. How about it? Any takers? This is one hack that would be really useful and I think would quickly become one of the all time favorites!

Specifically, I would like the following options incorporated:

1. Give the admin the ability to either allow or disallow attachments on a per forum basis (in the latest vB 2.2.4 it is my understanding that attachments are a global option, either you allow them in all forums or none).

2. If attachments are allowed in a particular forum, the admin should be able to set the number of attachments permitted in that forum.

3. If attachments are not allowed in a particular forum, no attachment box(es) should appear when posting. Likewise when editing a post in such a forum.

4. When editing a post in a forum that allows attachments, the user should be able to delete any or all of the attachments previously posted. Perhaps a check box would appear next to each attachment listed so that the user could select any or all of them and hit a dedicated "Delete Attachments" button that would leave the user in the posting window?

5. When editing a post in a forum that allows attachments, only the available number of attachment box(es) that the user has not used should appear so new attachments can be posted but, in any event, the poster will not be able to post additional attachments above the limit set for that forum. To be clear, if 3 attachments are allowed and a user only posts 1 initially, when the user returns to edit the post, 2 attachment boxes would appear. If the user then posts 2 more attachments he will have reached his limit of 3. When he returns to edit the post again, no attachment boxes would appear until he deletes 1 or more of the previously posted attachments.

6. The admin should have the option to store the attachments in the database or a user specified directory. Ideally, this would be set per forum also.

I would be willing to pay a reasonable fee for this hack.

I'm currently working on a multiple attachments hack. Right now it only lacks the ability to restrict the number of attackments on a per forum/usergroup basis, but i'll fix this soon.
Everything else works very well.

as soon as the hack is complete i'll think about publishing it here.

Not sure if anyone has pointed out the history of this hack or not and too lazy to read the whole thread. :)

As far as I remeber the general rumors from jellsoft that such a feature will be part of vB3 may have scared anyone else (other than the mentioned paid hack) from bothering to write such a hack, considering a upgrade script might be needed as/when vB3 appears.

That's nice, just not very meaningful or helpful though. Not trying to start anything here but what was the purpose of NerdNations post? All I was asking for with my reply was more information to an otherwise useless post. After all, why tell us that the hack apparently exists and then not tell us where to get it or if it is even available? Fine if the author doesn't want to release it, no one is forcing him to. Perhaps NerdNations doesn't have the answers to those questions. If that were the case, how easy would it have been just to say that in the first place or better yet why post at all? It added nothing to the discussion and didn't get us any closer to getting the hack done.

Maybe I am missing something here but I thought the point of posting here was to get help? To find a hacker ready, willing and able to write a multiple attachment hack. Correct me if I am wrong but afterall, this is the purpose of the "Requests" forum, correct? Not to find all the hackers that don't want to do a hack or all the potential reasons for not doing a hack.

It appears that neo is feeling a little sensitive since he volunteered to give it a go at some point and then withdrew, for whatever reason. Hey neo, it's Ok, really. No problem, no harm, no foul, no explanation necessary. It's certainly your prerogative not to do it. Move on buddy.

Next. Anyone else want to give it a go?

As has been stated before, with as many times as it has been requested it appears this would be a useful hack. However, since this apparently has only been done and released as a paid hack, this must be a very difficult hack, which is perhaps beyond the reach of many hackers here?

On the other hand, as dabean pointed out, I realize with the impending release of vB3 and the rumors that it is supposed to have multiple attachment support, this may make it not worth doing by some, and that is Ok. But what if we don't want to wait (several months?) for the vB3 release or perhaps don't want to upgrade when it comes out? What then?

And what is this all about? How did any of this contribute to the thread?

I've done alot of work with attachments especially how they work and the code would be relatively simple to get multiple attachments in the database, its getting showthread.php to behave itself and deal with multiple attachments properly and I also think the moderation panel will have a problem with moderating attachments, the attachmentid within post will have to have to have the id's seperated by commas or some other delimiter.

we do now how to do it, just your tone doesnt make it worth our while as we're not going to get any appreciation.

didnt someone say this was going to be included in vb 3.0? i would hate for someone to do all the work then have 3.0 come out a few months later with it all included

it's getting to the point where VBv3 is rumoured to have the multiple attachments, but might not have. But no one is going to bother making a multiple attachments hack, because it's supposedly coming out in VBv3....

so, i'm left with a little under 12,000 images to go, and the *possibility* of a 3rd-party hack, or a *possibility* of VBv3 having the feature.


I need a confirmed solution.

We would rather not show anyone the forum at the moment, because we do not wish to release it's details at this time. And IF my private forum details are left available in full view to Joe Public, I want to know why, seeing as the only organisation that does know that particular information is VB.
