View Full Version : Quick Thread Box

Ok, this is like Fireflys quick reply box, but its for making quick threads. This is at the bottonm of your forumdisplay.

This has the basics to it. There are only the name of the new thread and the new thread message area. And if people wish for more options.. maybe thats what the normal way is for ;)

Enjoy.

Awesome hack, I won't be using it (for obvious spam reasons) but it's great for a lot of boards. I know some vB owners that will love this, excellent work!

Bloody Brilliant!!!

Using in my forums - anything to make it easier for the less web-literate forum users to start a new thread. Most don't need all the advanced features of the "New Thread" page - this, combined with the quick post feature, have almost doubled my daily post count within 24 hours of being installed.

You Rock Neo!! :D

Hi,

I've come across what appears to be a bug :

Does this hack check for forums acting as categories? I'm using on my site at http://www.servicepals.com/forums/index.php to great effect, and I've noticed a definate increase in new threads due to the simplicity of the hack. But I've started seeing some strangeness where people are posting in categories, where the "new thread" box is disabled, but they can post because of the quick thread box.

Is there any way to change the hack to check whether the forum is a proper forum or just a category?

Many thanks,

Ross

Yup - that does the trick. Thanks Neo!!

Hope this functionality is included in v3 - it really does make the site a lot more intuitive. I know vBulletin started as a system for IT-literate people, but it's these kind of features which makes it great for the average user.

^neo i had the same problem.. lol.. no users on my board noticed it... but it was great for un-seeable freeposting... but i fixed it now:)

Hi.
I made this so people can add attachments on Firefly's quick reply box. I do not take credit for the quick reply box. I have taken the quick reply box txt. file and modifiyed it. It works perfect. I have fixed the templates and php files, so there is no need to worry. I have it here so you can use it. I figured it would help alot of people. Also im releasing it for Neo's new thread box if anyone would like it.
Have fun

Not sure...

I got an upgrade to Neo's Quick Thread thing...

I'll attach it to my reply on the next one...

It adds PostIcons...You will of course have to edit it to your own...

So what do you think of the add-on?

I was wondering...

Every time you post a New Thread using this, it doesnt add your Signature...

How could you make it enable Signatures?

signatures, parsing urls, similies are handled by form values passed to newthread.php

the defaults on my forum are for signatures and to automatically parse urls.

to pass these silently as defaults use input type hidden

<input type="hidden" name="parseurl" value="yes" checked>
<input type="hidden" name="signature" value="yes" checked> and include them somewhere on your submit form (probably just below check message length)

or you can give them an option or two (see attached pic):

find:
<smallfont><a href="javascript:checklength(document.vbform);">[check message length]</a></smallfont></td>
</tr>
</table>
</td>
</tr>

and below put:

<tr>
<td bgcolor="{ firstaltcolor}" valign="top"><normalfont><b>Options:</b></normalfont></td>
<td bgcolor="{ firstaltcolor}" valign="top"><smallfont>
<input type="checkbox" name="parseurl" value="yes" checked> <b>Automatically parse URLs:</b> automatically adds [ url] and [ /url] around internet addresses.
<br><input type="checkbox" name="signature" value="yes" checked> <b>Show Signature:</b> include your profile signature. Only registered users may have signatures.
</smallfont></td>
</tr>

remember to remove the spaces after { and [

if you want to give them more options copy and paste the inputs out of the newthread template and hide the ones you dont want shown (you may need to hardcode some variables like $signaturechecked (either CHECKED or UNCHECKED)

Add this line:

$clickysmilies = getclickysmilies();

to showthread.php right after this:

$textareacols = gettextareawidth();

then use $clickysmilies in the "newthreadbox" template to add the box with the smilies in it, but you will also need to add these two lines:

<script language="Javascript" src="vbcode.js"></script>
<script language="Javascript" src="vbcode_language.js"></script>

to the template either before or after :

<tr>
<td bgcolor="{firstaltcolor}" valign="top" nowrap><normalfont><b>Message:</b></normalfont>
<p><smallfont>
See Forum Rules (below) for<br>
more information about what<br>
codes you are allowed to use<br>
in your posts.
</smallfont></p></td>
<td bgcolor="{firstaltcolor}">
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<tr valign="top">
<td><textarea name="message" rows="7" cols="$textareacols" wrap="virtual" tabindex="2">$message</textarea><br>
<smallfont><a href="javascript:checklength(document.vbform);">[check message length]</a></smallfont></td>
</tr>
</table>
</td>
</tr>

Hope that helps...

Help!

Why do I get this:

Parse error: parse error, expecting `T_STRING' or `T_VARIABLE' or `T_NUM_STRING' in /var/www/vhosts/hostnexus.com/httpdocs/forum/forumdisplay.php(64) : eval()'d code on line 1

Ideas? I'm a hacking dunce. :D

(Note: You have the option to put this anywhere with your forumdisplay templates,to better style your site)
##### now in the forumdisplay template find #####

$forumdisplay[ threadslist ]

do i find this over forumdisplay.php? cos i searched for the code.. i found these..
if ($totalthreads>0 || $stickyids != '') {
// there are threads
eval("\$forumdisplay[threadslist] = \"".gettemplate('forumdisplay_threadslist')."\";");
} else {
// just announcements
eval("\$forumdisplay[threadslist] = \"".gettemplate('forumdisplay_announcementsonly')."\";");
}

} else {
// there are no threads or announcements to show
eval("\$forumdisplay[threadslist] = \"".gettemplate('forumdisplay_nothreads')."\";");
}

im new to installing hacks.. please help..

hmm....while most version changes in vB are subtle (somewhat)

version 2.2.8 has a problem with this hack (and i installed it exactly)

in where it hides subforums...and yes, i checked the forums active controls and such...but the hack seems to hide subforums...if u could help with this, it would be great, cause i like this hack, and to have it not work is dissapointing..

I've got a problem with this hack - it appears to kill email notification for my 2.2.9 board.

Once I reverted to the old forumdisplay, email notification worked again. I noticed an addition to Firefly's Quick Reply hack that provide an if/then. I have that hack installed and it works fine, and inluded that extra codechunk.

Is there a fix out there, or a problem anyone else is having with email notification with this hack?

Add this line:

$clickysmilies = getclickysmilies();

to forumdisplay.php right after this:

$textareacols = gettextareawidth();

Open newthreadbox template and add these to lines to the very begining:

<script language="Javascript" src="vbcode.js"></script>
<script language="Javascript" src="vbcode_language.js"></script>

then use $clickysmilies in the "newthreadbox" template to add the box with the smilies in it.

To add it where I added mine find:

<normalfont><b>Message:</b></normalfont>

Add it right beside it so the smilies box displays under Message:

$clickysmilies

I know hellsatan did this already but he asked to edit the wrong file. This works perfectly fine on vB2.3.0.
