Do you have any screenshots of the admin?
Am I just not looking in the right place or is the karma hack just not visible to unregistered users?

U must register on the link below and then apply for the karma hack, after that the order must be approved by the administrator and then (i guess) you receive an email with a link where you can download the karma hack.

What I don't understand is why you need to know where I live, what my phone number is, when I was born, etc just for a VB hack. I mean, if you want to make people join your site, fine, but that is way too much data you are collecting for no reason. Plus, your privacy policy clearly states that you will be sharing my information with your affiliates, which in essence means that someone else will have all my personal info. Yes, I read the whole policy, and it does say that it will not be shared with third parties without my permission, but your affiliates are excluded from this. I am sure that this is a great hack, but since I can't even see it use on your board unless I register, I think I will pass until a better way to download it has been established.
Of course, that is just my opinion, and I could be wrong.

He is not violating the license. What if someone bought Overgrow's Karma hack, and they had an illegal vb..?
Same thing is it not. What about people who make that photo image....built off VB....They sell it to anyone who has the money...so I mean its not like he is charging for the hack.
But yes only license users can download offer the best security, but its his hack, for which he is donating to us
that is also a good point of alot of info...

The shopping system on CertifyDev is a from osCommerce.com and I did some hacking on it so you guys can download it and this is what I get. If you don't trust us, fine let it be.
Lesane - I will sent you the zip file later, I tested and it seems to be working file. I don't know why it's not working on your end.
GraphicW - Yes it on the main page only (currently) but I will make it work on anypage you want the karma to display on the next version 1.1 (E.T.A February 19 2002).

I thank you very much for this hack, but I have never been more busy then going through all that registration just to get a zip file, nice for you to get more registered users this way, and pageviews for your stats. The file is really small, so I wonder why you can't attach it to the board here. Nice of you to have a complete payment system/ shopping cart thing going on, but it has nothing to do with vBulletin. Just having to go through all this trouble .. then I just wont download it, sorry.

Ok, I am having a small problem and I am hoping that you can help me out Certify. Ok, I have installed you hack on vBulletin 2.2.2, everything seems to be ok and running smoothly but the problem I am having is that the points are not showing up.
I have set the points in the section where I need to and all, afterwards I went to my username on the board and went to the bottom and selected "Add Points" from the drop down box. It shows I should have 6 points at this time (in the edit user section of the admin cp), but on the posts I have made, it does not show the points at all.
Is this a bug/error or do I have to reach the amount of posts set in the edit section before I can add points?
Please get back to me, I would like for this to work, it is a great hack, just this small problem :)
Thank you for the great hack and get to me as soon as you can,

Ok, well the reason I could not see it was because I did not add it to the right template (welcome text).
Is there anyway that you could make it to where we can add it to the postbit template Certify? That would be much better than having it viewed on the home page templates (in my opinion anyway).
Thanks,

Well at this time he does not have it up as he upgraded from 1.1.6 to 2.2.1 - BIG upgrade :).
Anyway, his went according to how much karma you had. Let's say you have 20 Karma points, you would have 1 green dot under your name in all your posts (the display of the green dots looks like the stars hack).
Such as this
Username
Administrator
* * * * * <-----Karma Dots
Avatar Here
Posts: 100
Location: USA
ect...
Something to that effect.

If you are trying to install it on "localhost" such as on your home computer, it probably will not work. I think one person got it to work but I have installed and compiled Apache, PHP, MySQL, Perl, ect on my computer and it will not install on my home computer.
I had to install it on my actual server on the internet, so you may be one of the ones that have to do that also.
If you are not trying to install it on "localhost" on your computer, then I am not sure what could be the problem right off, everyone else seems to have it working (I think) :)
MarkB
02-09-2002, 09:25 PM
To install it on your local machine, replace action=$script with action=install_point.php in the install file.
For some reason, when submitting the form, it tries to use /php/php.exe instead of install_point.php.
Sorry if this isn't clear enough, I just woke up :D

One thing you may want to look at is the ability for users to give Karma and comments based on posts as the Overgrow hack does. This would make the feature fun for the users and they would have the ability to apply negative/positive Karma with comments.

I agree with that fully :)
Not to seem overcritical but what exactly does this hack have to do with Karma at all? This is a very nice point system but I'm not really understanding where it is a Karma system.
When I think Karma I think Postive awards for Positive things, Negative awards for negative things? This is just points per post and reply etc.. There is no interaction with the rest of the community above this.
I was actually quite excited when I saw this, however it's not at all what I was expecting, perhaps I am missing something (I hope so) But where (other than the title) is karma involved here?
I would like to point out its not that I dont like the hack, I'm actually quite taken with it. Just think the name is very misleading.
Guichi
02-11-2002, 10:55 AM
luckily for us
1. the hack is free unlike overgrows
2. the author seems to be very opened-minded about adding features that members want
i think this this a great start towards an exellent freeware karma hack. Thanks certify for a great hack, im going to install it either today or tommorow.
also, how about an auto-ban feature like the old UBB ones, this you can set the amount of negative karma so that the person is automatically banned for ex: -5 karma points.

SaintDog
02-11-2002, 02:32 PM
I would have to agree with Bane, although it is a nice hack, the name is a little misleading since almost everyone (even if they have not used it personally on their board) is acustom to Overgrow's hack, such as the look & feel of it.
Certify does seem open minded about the hack, so I would hope he will try to replicate the hack that Overgrow has produced, or have something close :).
pgowder: At this time, no, other users can not view other users karma. I as well as some others have mentioned it should be included in the postbit template, which would allow others to view it, but at this time, only you can view it.

Don't forget the images, I think, imo, images such as those that Overgrow was using better represents the karma, more than points do.
If you can, images based on the amount of karma you have would be nice (admin should be able to edit this in the admin cp such as that in the stars hack).

Excellent hack!
If karma exists in real life, you sure did gain a lot of it by creating (and developing) this hack.
Don't pay too much attention the the "misleading name" posts - I'm quite sure you will make this hack much better than overgrows ever was.
Kudos to you, sir!

Oh, and methinks that it would be a very good idea to be able to turn off this system in certain forums. For instance, I don't want people to give karma in the "Religious and Political discussion" forums.

For those of you who blame him for asking too many details, indirect spam blah blah... note that certify uses oscommerce out-of-the-box script, not his intention to ask too much details like that. Playing around with oscommerce script and you will know what I meant. Besides, eventhough it's annoying, but just put fake address and that's it.

Wow. Overgrow wins!
Anyway, in that case, I have a (somewhat offtopic) suggestion for the future implementation of karma in vb3:
Option to replace thread rating with average karma
This is a very simple, but very useful, modification. Essentially, instead of using thread ratings, the script calculates the average karma per post in the thread, and displays that instead of rating.
A bit more smooth than using both karma and thread ratings at the same time.

vB3 wont be released for a while, so thank certify to provide the functionality now.
One question- is it possible to "reset" the karm count to zero for all the users? We're thinking of having competitions every month and whoever has the highest karma points wins. So we need to reset the karma points to zero at the end of every month.
And how does the admin view the karma points of the users? The option in the control panel says "Add/Modify/View Points" but when you click you can add/modify...how do you view?
Thanks

Just use the search user option to view the users's karma points.
At the moment there is no option to reset karma. Probably we will add that in the future.

Is there a way to list all the users sorted from highest to lowest through their Karma points?
Checking every user to see how many points they have could become very tiresome if you have 1000+ users.
Thanks

If you installed hacks after you installed the Karma hack you may have over-written some of the karma hacks coding (which would render it not working). As far as it not being in the Admin CP, you may not have added the code for the link in admin/index.php.
Just on a side note to other users it is vB not vBB ;)

I think this hack should be has two functions:
1. User's point should be showed in post.
2. User's point should be control user to view post.
Exp.
When a user post a new thread or replay a thread,he can select a least point to view the post.

Eh? What would be the point of that? Only users with karma > 300 can read this thread? Seem like a cool, but useless function.
I would rather reverse it, like the slashdot karma system, i.e. display only "threads with postitive karma" or "display only threads with at leas 200" karma in the thread sorting. This would, of course, require that karma is tied to posts, not user, like with slashdot and the overgrow hack.
I think only >=50 points enough.

I have it installed on a testing board and everything went smoothly on the install as well as the appearence, you did a good job, I have but a few suggestions that may make it look a little better though:
Note: These are only my personal suggestions.
1. The Pop Up Window
- If you could, I would make it follow the colors of the board, or in the least, the admin control panel colors, may make it look better than white.
- When typing in a comment for a user, I can hardly see the text I am typing in, you may want to make the text a little larger.
- I know this is fixable from plain sight, but the pop-up is overly large, a smaller box would look better imo.
2. The Postbit
- If you want to make it like overgrows hack, the images need to add on as the karma grows. Such as once a user hits 20 KP, there are 3 karma dots (admin should be able to set this). Right now I am only seeing 1 dots no matter what.
- When you click on the dot it is plural when there is 1 KP, maybe make it to where is say "user has 1 karma point" "user has 2 karma points" (just grammer ;)).
Just a few comments/suggestions to better the hack (from my personal view). I think you have done a great job so far with the hack and look to see future version of the hack when they are released.
Keep up the great work Certify!

The instructions here are all whacked...
1. Upload to your forums directory:
- adis.php
2. Upload to your forums/admin directory:
- install_point.php(for those that have installed vbkarma version1, please upload install_point2.php)
- kpoints.php
3. Upload to your forums/images directory:
- karmabalance.gif
- karmaneg.gif
- karmapos.gif
- postkarma.gif
2. Run /admin/install_point.php(run upgrade_karma_1_0.php if you have installed the previous version)
3. Delete /admin/install_karma.php
Steps 1-2-3-2-3 ?? And the install_point files aren't in the zip, and the install_karma file can't be deleted because the instructions don't say to upload it in the first place ?
I'm confused ?? :D:D

yeah im wondering the same thing, Thanks much certify this is the hack ive been waiting for!
LOVE the hack! I have a problem and a couple of suggestions.
I have two different styles on my forum ( http://forum.gravitoncity.com ), and when I installed the hack I made sure I updated the templates for both styles. However, the hack only seems to work on the style that I've selected. There are no karma lights under usernames, no karma button under the posts, and no karma score under the username on the front page.
I wanted to re-run the install to make sure that I read all the instructions right, but I realised that I might wipe all the karma given already by creating the database tables again! *gulp* I'm not great with php or mysql, so I don't wanna screw it up hehe.
Can anyone help?
Suggestions:
More karma=more lights under the username. Let the admin set how many points = how many lights.
Apply the selected style to the karma rating box. It's just white at the moment. Also, I agree the text is too small and the box too big.
For some reason if i select positive karma and enter a comment, hitting enter resets the form rather than submitting it. It is habit for me to hit enter rather than click submit, so this is a bit annoying.
Have a list of preset comments that ppl can choose from if they cant be bothered writing a comment. The slashdot keywords (eg: Interesting, Toll, Funny, Flamebait, Informative, Redundant) might be a good start.
Show a karma rating for each post. We know the karma for the user, but not for their posts. Parhaps put it at the top next to where the post topic appears (if there is one).
I'd LOVE to be able to filter posts ala slashdot based on their karma.
Add a column to the memberlist page with their karma shown, and allow the list to be sorted by karma (as it can now be done with number of posts).
Allow a user to see all comments made to their posts, rather than having to go to each post. There could be a link in the user CP perhaps to a list of all comments, and the posts they're associated with. The karma for that post could also be listed there.
Ability for the admin to change the phrase in the popup box via the admin CP. I didn't like "Agree/Disagree" because that means something completely different from "good/bad" post. Someone might make a brilliantly written post that I don't agree with, but the wording would suggest that I should give them negative Karma. (I've hacked the adis file to change it on mine).
I like the previously mentioned idea of awarding karma for each referral. Would encourage more referrals.
Allow the admin to choose how much they give/take as extra on each post. Setting it in the CP is easy, but it means that all posts to be awarded must be awarded by the same ammount.
*phew* That's all I can think of for the moment. I hope I havn't been too demanding with these suggestions. I love the hack so far, and think that it can get even better. Use or ignore these as you see fit!
THANKS once again for the hack!

When you installed it, presumable you applied the modifications to the templates in your default style ? Then reapply the template parts of the hack to the same templates, but in your other styles... that's my guess.
As far as I recall, I was careful to apply any template mods to ALL of the templates used on my site. Besides, the functions that display the karma totals and the karma button are defined in the script, rather than the template right?
Also, I can't go back and apply the changes in the template anyway, because the instructions are in the install file, and if I run that again it'll stuff up the database, won't it?
Winky
03-03-2002, 07:29 PM
ok maybe I am stupid here but the install text says nothing and the install script says nothing when doing the install does the install do everything for you or is it just telling you what you need to modify? I tried both ways and nothing works for me.

Thank you for this hack.
Currently I have 3 main concerns.
1) I think a template should be used for the content of the pop-up box rather than holding all this within adis.php.
2) adis.php is checking for the user's title:
if ($usertitle == 'Administrator' || $usertitle == 'Moderator') This is dangerous because the user title can be changed in the user CP, it should be checking for the usergroup being either a moderator, super moderator or admin.
3) By refreshing pages (or using the back button) I have been able to vote more than once.
Niggles:
1) The button alt image in postbits has the spelling "karna" not "karma" :)
2) It waits for you to enter a comment then tells you that you should log in first!
3) You can submit a comment without selecting a positive or negative opinion.

Currently I have 3 main concerns.
1) I think a template should be used for the content of the pop-up box rather than holding all this within adis.php.
2) adis.php is checking for the user's title:
This is dangerous because the user title can be changed in the user CP, it should be checking for the usergroup being either a moderator, super moderator or admin.
I will ask my team to take a look.
Great to hear you're on top oc it certify! Can't wait to see the next version. Got a couple more points.
A user had the brilliant suggestion. Karma can can be reduced with time. The admin can set the rate (egL 1pt per month to 10 per day etc). This would encourage people to keep coming back, keep posting good posts, and give newcomers a chance to get as much karma as the old-time regulars. It would also mean that there may not be the same 5 people with the most karma.
I noticed a problem which I don't know if it is a bug or a limitation of the script. When typing a "?" in the comment field, the database rejects the entry. I'm not sure if this happens with other special characters. At the very least, the popup should have a list of invalid characters.
I still havn't figured out why the hack is only working on one of my styles! It's unfortunate because some of my users are unable to see the hack at all!! Can anyone help? (please read my previous posts for details).

Will be release in April 2002. ;) If you have any features to suggest or recommendation please post a NEW thread in my forum (http://www.certifyexpress.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&forumid=358) instead of vbulletin.org, so I can keep track of all the suggestions and as this thread is getting too long and I can't keep up with it.

I had installed Karma 1.2 already (clean install about a week ago, no other hacks are installed on the board), went to use the upgrade in version 1.3, then the above happened.
SaintDog
The upgrade from 1.0 to 1.3 went very well. Good work I like the hack. Anyway, if I click on karma and want to add a comment using the link It says You need to be registered.... although I'm registered. I removed the line which say include header/footer. But as that are only HTML files it shouldn't be a problem.

Don't run run upgrade_karma_1_0.php
This is what you have to do.
For those that are upgrading from version 1.2 to 1.3, upload adis.php and kpoints.php. Change the following lines in your postbit template.
(a)find this line of code:
winAtt = "scrollbars=1, width=900, height=500, left=5";
replace it with:
winAtt = "scrollbars=1, width=500, height=300, left=5";
(b)find this line of code:
<a href="javascript:popout('adis.php?flag=$post[flag]&postid=$post[postid]&userid=$bbuserinfo[userid]&username=$bbuserinfo[username]&usertitle=$bbuserinfo[usertitle]&post_userid=$post[userid]&post_username=$post[username]')"><img src="https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/vbimages/postkarma.gif" border="0" alt="Karna"></a>

Inferno,
Here is the help you need. First I will explain the cause of the problem:
The instructions give wrong information on how to place the Karma image link. The result is that the script is not sent sufficient information ($usertitle) causing a null result to be sent. The result is that to adis.php, you appear not to be registered.
Enough talk now, here is the fix:

The permissions for the extra Admin options are given to usergroup 6 (admins) and the moderator(s) of the forum - if a moderator is not the designated mod for the forum that the post is in, the extra Admin options won't be available. You can change this by changing the relevant Adis.php bits.

You give karma points for a member's specific post by clicking on the karma button. Click the karma button again, and you should see the users who have given karma for that post.

This is actually pretty strange, when I am logged in as an administrator I can't even click the "Add Karma" button on adis.php (nothing happens when the button is clicked). When I logged in as a member it simply was the "not logged in error". Again, this is with the following fix:
Find the in your postbit template:
<a href="newreply.php?s=$session[sessionhash]&action=newreply&postid=$post[postid]"><img src="https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/images/quote.gif" border="0" alt="Reply w/Quote"></a>
Under it, place this code:

You are meant to make your own. Just look at your "header" and "footer" templates, and copy the code into a "header.html" and "footer.html" file, and upload those to your forum directory. There are easier ways of doing this, but the author of this hack is assuming you would do it this way.

You may wish to visit his board as he mentioned in his first post. It mentions he will try to provide support here, but he is not the only developer within the project. As posted above, try his forums you may be able to obtain more support/help than you would here (at least at this time).

Are you still taking suggestions at your site?
I tried the link, but got invalid forum??
I'd like to modify the hack so that posts in some forums were worth more. I'm getting an increase in posts, but most in my Chat forum.
I'd like to create more discussion in the other subject areas.
Thanks

Thank you for this hack. I changed it to Horsepower instead of karma since I run a car board. I need to change a few more things as I go, but you can see a working copy at www.haiparts.com/vbulletin/

Hmmm running it now at http://club.cdfreaks.com 15.000+ daily visitors 16.000+ members, I wonder how the load will be when it's fully active, but for now it doesn't increase much...
Great hack, hope our users will also enjoy it !

OK I'm lost.
I'm geting the following error
Parse error: parse error in /homepages/7/d67780352/htdocs/forum/admin/functions.php on line 163
Line 163 is: elseif ($check_posneg == '-')
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: getuserinfo() in /homepages/7/d67780352/htdocs/forum/admin/sessions.php on line 324
Line 324 is: $bbuserinfo=getuserinfo($session['userid']);
If anybody could help me I would appreciate it very much.
BTW: I noticed that the files adis.php and kpoints.php are totally screwed up. They don't make any sense to me.

This hack is too complicated and too much timetaking when installing it as well as not working - although it was installed correctly.
It could be done much simplier.
However, good work, if it works, which it doesn't here.
Peace
