View Full Version : Restrict Forum Access Based On Age

I can see lots of wholes in this theory, but I'd like to see it in practice.
What I want to do is have a forum that I can specify a rating on, i.e R16 or R18 (and no it's not for porn :D ).
I want to put a couple of joke forums and I'd rather restrict access from those that might be considered underage for some jokes.
Seeing as 90% of people enter their age and birthday when they sign up I thought this would be a good hack.
Comments?? Possibility??

In theory, yes, this is possible, but as you said, there are a lot of holes in this idea. Your 90% number seems a little high to me to begin with, although maybe your members truly are like that, I don't know. But anybody could fake that info. Personally, if I wanted to age-limit a forum, I would create a new usergroup identical to the regular usergroup, and set up the forum/usergroup permissions so one group could get in, and the other couldn't. Then, if anyone wanted access to the age-limited forum, before moving that member to the access-enabled group I would require them to mail, email, or fax me a signed, enlarged photocopy of a driver's license, birth certificate, or other positive means of age verification. While this method is not fool proof, I believe it to be more so than just basing access on whatever a member chooses to list as his/her age, plus the added hassle to the member should weed out more of the dishonest types. :)

Im not sure but if you were to do this, this would help alot
Create a User Field where they specify their age in.
Make the Field where they cannot edit it again. Although your board might be up for a year but if so, after a certain period of time, Open it back up for users to update their age. LOL that idea prolly sounds crazy but could work, if you have atleast 95% control of your board.

Has anyone given this anymore thought? I think that this would be a very useful hack. ANYONE
Has anyone came up with anything for this idea ??? I need an age verification page to come up for any user that enters a specific forum that is listed over 18 when they do I need the form to pop up and the user to click on the over 18 button to view. This will protect the site from breaking laws with under 18 viewing explicit material... Anyone ?

well, you know how they have a minimum age of 13, try etting that to 18 this way anyone under 18 has to be moderated, then those people go to a different usergroup that are restricted to use some forums
i am not a CODER
but thats what id do

Yep better off doing it via usergroups that way in theory (assuming no adults talk to the children of the forum) the children won't know about the adult areas.. You would have to have no mention of it in the all access areas though. So registration is available to any age but if they say over 18 they get access. If they say under 18 they will have no idea that they are missing out.
Or the scanning of ID is good too but they can just grab their parents and it could take a while if you had a lot of members.

im looking for a hack that would work this way...
ive thougt about the usergroups bit, but for the content that is going to be in this section its not worth the hassle, its just somewhere for the older ones to go and not have to worry as much what they are saying.
Also does anyone know if there is any way to disable the word filter in specific forums only
?
