Hi all, i'm working on an interactive story script at the moment, It;s quite complex, but most of the hard work is done.
The problem i've got now is that some even harder work has just come up.................
I would like to integrate it with vB, but as of yet i've had no luck doing it, basically I would like it to check if a user is logged into vB, and if not then send them to a login page.
In addition to this, I'll also want to show users avatars on the story posts, etc..
I would be more than happy to share my code with anyone that can help me with this problem, or maybe to the whole of the vB community.
Thank you

I'm not so much getting any errors, it's more of a case of I don't know where to start, from looking at some other hacks i've noticed that global.php deals with things like users login in, etc.. but that is about all I know at the moment :)

interactive story eh?
i'm creating an rpg system for my boards... i'm done with the fighting engine, but would love to have a quest editor, if that's what you're doing. exactly what do you need to know? using "require ('./global.php')" will easily connect your script to the forums and the database without you having to manually connecting to it every time. if you have msn, you can contact me at avalon@allsquare.net or you could just email me there.

Hi, i've added you to my MSN contact list, i'm looking foward to working with you :)
I'm not too sure if this would be any good as a quest editor, but i'm sure that you might be able to use the system in some way.
Basically, i'm looking to use the vB user database for my script, so that is a user is logged into vB, they will be able to post new chapters to the story, otherwise they will be asked to sign-up.
Do you know how to do this?
BTW, i've been to your site, I love it, I'm a big FF fan myself :)

So this would allow users to engage in a long story with users as the characters?
Things like /me looks across the vast wilderness and sees Iltin mooning a crocodile in the sun?
(yes, that was a request for a /me inclusion ;))
I would love this if it was done as it would be like an RPG, without all the battling (which is exactly what I want!) !

Sure, a little I guess. What's the difference between the / me hack and the interactive story? :)
Sorry guys, I'm new to PHP, VB and all this stuff so forgive this poor old ASP guy :)

You know what, it's funny, i've just been thinking about re-starting this project, I don't know if i'll do it as a hack for vB, or as a stand alone script, but if anyone out there fancies helping out, gimme a shout :)

If you were doing it in ASP.... ;) Just kidding. I've actually come to appreciate PHP for what it does in a new way since I took over RingQuest :)
I guess I'm just trying to satisfy some of my users' needs is all :)

sorry to go OT, but what software are you using to run RingQuest (other than vB)?

MySQL, some version of Linux (don't ask me), vB, PhotoPost, vBPortal, phpmyadmin...
Am I missing anything?

ah, it was the vBPortal bit i was after, and as a PHP newbie (despite being an ASP pro) what do you think about vBP?

I don't like it. Not to be harsh (you might be part of the team for all I know), but the code seems clunky, it isn't intuitive to use or admin. Jelsoft's stuff is top notch so I can't wait for the rumoured VB CMS to come out :)

Oh no, i'm not part of the team or anything - it's just that I've used vBP myself in the past and did not like it much at all - in fact i can't say that I'm a fan of any NUKE based project (except for PostNuke maybe - that has promise).
anyway, OT over - thank you for listening :)

Now that we've had "small talk", question: What is the difference between an interactive story and the / me command?
Ninth Dimension
05-24-2002, 01:04 PM
well, first off you will have to explain to me what the / me command is???
hey, do you have ICQ or MSN?
MSN: daniel_hollands@msn.com
ICQ: 27509219

I have both, at home. If you want to talk tomorrow we can. I won't be on all day (yeah, the wife would love that), but sunrisegraphix@hotmail.com is my MSN :)
The / me hack allows you to do IRC-like "actions". Go ahead and try it, / me (without spaces) looks @ wall or something.

* danielhollands is confused
yeah, i've used this b4 for things like Worms World Party, but to be 100% honest with you, i've got no idea quite how this is even relevant to my interactive story :(
Anyway, we can have a chat tomorrow or something, i've added you to my MSN list (which i use more often tha ICQ) and i can explain what my IS script does (so far)
