Well, with over 200 downloads and 32 problem free install's, I though it time to take this out of the beta hacks forum (note, there are no changes to the file in the beta forum, so no need to re-download if you already have the hack installed).

I put this together originally as a walkthrough for an admin friend, and thought someone might find it useful. Althouth technically, my contribution is a couple of simple template edits, it does contain hacks posted previously.

Like I said, it's a combination of 2 previously relesed hacks (both credited fully). One by Firefly (avatar hack (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32560)) and one by MrLister (since your last visit (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31957)). It combines both of these hacks into a welcome panel at the top of the BB, just like the one here and on a few other sites. I'm pretty much a newbie to vB hacking, and struggled to put this together myself (couldn't find any instructions/hacks etc), but I think I've done an OK job. Maybe this will save a few headaches to others like myself ;)

Anyway, here's a pic to illustrate the hack/edit (or whatever it is :D)

http://www.britishblades.com/pics/welcomepanel1.gif

You can see a working verion of this hack here:

The Genome Collective (http://www.thegenomecollective.com/forum/index.php?referrerid=8)

Thanks to Firefly and MrLister for providing the PHP hacks in this err, whatever :)

(BTW, if this is in the wrong forum, please (mods) feel free to move it)

Happy Christmas everyone.

here it is:

edit: updated version number to 2.2.6 because it works :) There are no changes to the files - it's not a new release. Thanks. /edit

In reply to your post in the last thread, I uploaded the images. Can you check and see what the url is it is trying to call the avatars from?

And thanks for this hack, it adds a feeling of (this site just kicked my ass) to my boards, and I like that.

After I got a good php editor, It installed easily.

(For those of you without one, try www.download.com, search for edit plus 2)

It's looking for the avatars at..

.....ww.graphic-forums.com/images/avatars/guestavatar.gif

You can modify the url in the first part of the hack, find....

src="images/avatars/guestavatar.gif"

and...

$avatarurl='images/avatars/noavatar.gif';

...and change them to reflect the path of guestavatar and noavatar respectively.

Graphic-Forums

I noticed it pointed to a avatars directory, mine has it setup as avatar, so I didnt feel like editing php so I just made a avatars directory and uploaded.

Man, whatever you're happy with, but that's gotta be the hard way - I would have just clipped the "s" off the end - really simple, it's only a path ;)

Anyway, it's working fine now, though you might want to change those avatars to a colour scheme that matches your site better. Should be a breeze to knock out a couple of gif's in Photoshop for you guys ;)

I should point out here, that the lions share of the credit for this hack should go to FireFly and MrLister - they are the ones responsible for the PHP code hacks. All I've done is bring them together and slap on a fancy template edit and some instructions. I feel a little guilty it being in this forum at all.

You're the first one with a problem. You can't have done the template edits - otherwise at the very least you would have a new welcomepanel box at the top of your forum.

Make sure you edit your forumhome template, as instructed - redo it that is almost certainly where the problem is.

Question if I may, on many of these sites I saw the examples of this hack on, I saw many features on the front pages like:

birthday, top posters, etc, etc.

Where do you all get that stuff from? What I mean is, almost 10 sites had the same exact calendar, top posters, birthday, and private message boxes on the site.

Where is that downloadable from?

I red something about here, but would undestand what's the actual state of the art, and what of the hacks should be better to install before the other one.

Besides, there are actually two AAF hacks and would know which one has the best compatibility with the Welcome Panel Hack.

I'm pretty sure that if you're upgrading, the upgrade *doesn't* overwrite your templates.....

from vb.com...

Note: Upgrading will not overwrite any of your custom templates. If you have customized any template that is listed as 'modified' below, we seriously recommend using the 'revert' option to return them to the default template, then re-applying your customizations.

None of the template changes for 2.2.2 concern this hack, so you don't need to worry about the templates. But I havent seen a list of modified files. Looks like index.php has had some treatment and will need that part of the hack re-applying.

I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who can't get the hack to work using the existing instructions.

Cheers.

cool, at least we have one confirmation it still works in 2.2.2 without any changes, that's a lot better than none ;)

About compatibility with the AAF hack. I'm not familiar with either of them, and don't know enough php to code a workaround. If anyone else can - or manages to get both of em working somehow, a comprehensive post saying how, would be apreciated. Otherwise, it might just be a case of "pick the one you want most".

Yep, actually very easy.

In the forumhome template, fine the welcompanel edit that you added as part of the hack, scroll through untill you see..

$pminfo

and replace it with

$pminfo
$loggedinusers

Basically, you're just moving the "online users" section, up under the PM section in the welcome panel.

Dont forget to remove the "$loggedinusers" line, from further down the forumhome template, otherwise it will show twice.

anyone having problems using cutom avatars after using this hack? I have that problem but am not sure which hack is causing it as it used to work fine. Now they only way I can use or assign one is to add it to the public avatar list

trilOByte

Wierd, using custom avatars here with no problems. I can't think why it would be this hack, as it doesn't screw with the default avatar stuff at all - it just creates a new var called $avatarimage, but lets all the original stuff well alone, so that should work the same as normal.

Wierd.

just checking, I'm not sure how long this has been a problem and am trying to track it down. Any idea what files would mess with that? It's even weirder because once I have gone through all that and assigned the user the avatar, it still doesn't show in the admin panel for that user, only in the postbit like normal.

trilOByte
02-04-2002, 11:17 PM
Hmm, have you any hacks that alter the user profile - or maybe avatar.php?

You could expand all groups and check the templates, see if any related to avatars have been edited, then try and identify the edit/hack from there.

No more clues than that - sorry.

If you want to add a referer id link into the welcome panel, so all your members have to do is right click and choose copy shortcut, to get their unique refere id, here's how.....

In the forumhome template, find the welcomepanel addition, look for...

$unregwelcomemessage
$welcometext

and immediately above that add this.....

Your personal referral code is: <a href="$bburl/index.php?referrerid=$bbuserinfo[userid]">this link</a>

Will look like this:

For those who have Custom Avatars as Files HACK installed, here is the solution to make it works with the Welcome Panel HACK:

Replace this code from Welcome Panel HACK in INDEX.PHP:

if ($bbuserinfo[userid]!=0) {
$avatarurl=getavatarurl($bbuserinfo[userid]);
if ($avatarurl=='') {
$avatarurl='images/avatars/noavatar.gif';
}
$avatarimage='<a href="member.php?s='.$session[sessionhash].'&action=editavatar"><img src="'.$avatarurl.'" border="0">';
} else {
$avatarimage='<a href="register.php?s='.$session[sessionhash].'&action=signup"><img src="images/avatars/guestavatar.gif" border="0"></a>';
}

With this code:

############################
if ($bbuserinfo[userid]!=0) {
$avatarurl=getavatarurl($bbuserinfo[userid]);
if ($avatarurl=='') {
$avatarurl='images/avatars/noavatar.gif';
} else {
if ($post[hascustomavatar] and $avatarenabled) {
if ($usefileavatar) $avatarurl="custom_avatars/avatar$bbuserinfo[userid]_$bbuserinfo[avatarrevision].gif";
else $avatarurl="avatar.php?userid=$bbuserinfo[userid]";
}
}
$avatarimage='<a href="member.php?s='.$session[sessionhash].'&action=editavatar"><img src="'.$avatarurl.'" border="0">';
} else {
$avatarimage='<a href="register.php?s='.$session[sessionhash].'&action=signup"><img src="images/avatars/guestavatar.gif" border="0"></a>';
}
############################

I've tested and is working great...

Welcome Panel ROCKS!

I got that script from vbPortal.com as someone released it. That's probably the last change I did before I noticed the problem, so I am going to revert it to see if it fixes it. The thing is, I tried using $myavatarvariable in the login block with only the welcome panel hack installed and it wouldn't show.

Has anyone else noticed this? If not, any suggestions?

I have still some problems with the Kier's AaF hack installed, but only when I use a standard - NOT custom - avatar.
Actually it's within a category (another hack.... :D ) but it isn't the problem. I can't see the image in the welcome panel.

I guess of course it depends on the function the Welcome Panel calls : getavatarurl() (you can see more here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?postid=222508#post222508), about), but same I would put here my experience about this hard join.

Thanks a lot.

i want to implement this hack, but a fair share of our users have a specific forum bookmarked and don't always come in through the welcome page. so, ideally, i'd like it to pop at the user's point of entry rather than embedding it in a page.

before i spend a lot of time spinning my wheels for nothing, i thought i'd ask you more experienced types if you knew of anything that might cause a problem or prevent me from doing it that way. whaddaya think?

appreciate the help,

I would like to place much of the welcome panel in my header so it appears on all pages. What codes do I need to change or add in order to do this?

trilOByte
02-27-2002, 06:45 AM
Hack the index.php file just the same, in fact do everything just the same except -

When it comes to editing the forumhome template, instead of inserting the .....

<-- welcomepanel -->
*****
****
****
some code
***
****
*****
</--welcomepanel -->

Put that in you header instead. Of course, you will need to make sure the layout works, it's not something I would want to do myself, but it should work. It might look a bit wierd though. You'll have to play around with the tables to get it to look OK.

Yeah, I know it counts *ALL* the posts, including those in private forums. I'm not sure what to do about it. Making it so that admins can easily add forum ID's to an exclude function, would add a ton of code to an otherwise simple hack. Not sure if it's worth it.

Ok I installed the hack on vb version 2.2.3, everything went fine and worked great and I really like this hack.

However I have a problem and am unsure if the upgrade to this hack did it or the upgrade to 2.2.3 did it, but somehow my "today's Birthdays" has vanished from the page.

I did both the hack and the upgrade within a couple of hours and didn't notice it before.

Has anyone else installed the Welcome Panel and had their birthdays vanish?

I had installed the today/yesterday timestamp hack, and the date where it says "you last visited" still shows the date instead of "today" or "yesterday".

I think I need to hack the index.php file. Has anyone able to fix it? If so how?

Todays birthdays is not part of this hack. $birthdaybits is part of the forumhome_loggedinusers template, not the forumhome template and is called by $loggedinusers. It isn't changed or affected by this hack, so it stays in the default place (at least the default place for vB2.2).

Check to see if you have $loggedinusers in your forumhome template and $birthdaybits in your forumhome_loggedinusers template. This should still be intact as it isn't touched by this hack at all.

Hey there :)

I just upgraded my forum to the final version of 2.2.5 and re-applied the Welcome panel hack :) No problems what so ever! Works like charm again.
Guess this has been confirmed to work on all 2.2.x versions :)

Hi,
just to state that this is a very nice and long awaited (at least by me) hack to vB, just installed a "lite-version" of it on our forums.
Thanks trilOByte! :)

did you rehack it after your upgrade? I just rehacked my pugzoners.com board and it worked. Some of the templates get overwritten with the upgrade.

Do you know where I can find a list of the template changes between 2.2.x and 2.2.4? I have vbportals installed and would hate to have to recreate my whole theme from scratch...

Thanks though Allen .....ohh and by the way I got my e-mail working over at f5 ;)

Oh man i'm an idiot. My web host moved the servers. I had been connecting to my ftp server via my ip address instead of host name. It turns out I was connecting to the old server. I was editing the templates for my site, but when I would change anything in the actual files it was being changed on the old server instead of the new one. I pulled my head out of my ass and now everything works at it should.

Great hack thanks. One question. I don't allow my users to change their own avatars. How can I disable the link to the edit avatar page when they click on the avatar in the "Welcome" hack?

Thanks,
Rick

Floris

Open root/index.php in your fav. editor and search for:
$avatarimage='<a href="member.php?s='.$session[sessionhash].'&action=editavatar"><img src="'.$avatarurl.'" border="0">';
And remove the <a> tag from it. BUT! I did not test it, and I do not see the </a> at the end of the line. SO not sure if this will end up in a broken link. But that is the line you need to alter.

Like some people have noticed,

If you have a big forum (like euhm.. about.. lets say 100.000 posts, like mine)
Than the welcome panel hack really slows down the page!!!

My page generation time with this hack is 2.5 seconds!!!
That's all because of these 2:

Query: SELECT COUNT(*) AS threads FROM thread WHERE lastpost > '1018738585'
Time before: 0.2525429725647
Time after: 0.34668505191803

Query: SELECT count(*) AS posts FROM post WHERE dateline > '1018738585'
Time before: 0.3487149477005
Time after: 1.9500440120697

You can speed this up by adding 2 indexes to your tables.

Just run these 2 query's once on your database:

ALTER TABLE `thread` ADD INDEX(`'lastpost`);
ALTER TABLE `post` ADD INDEX(`dateline`);

After running these 2 I was verry glad with the result:

Query: SELECT COUNT(*) AS threads FROM thread WHERE lastpost > '1018738585'
Time before: 0.40777695178986
Time after: 0.40917897224426

Query: SELECT count(*) AS posts FROM post WHERE dateline > '1018738585'
Time before: 0.41155600547791
Time after: 0.41288495063782

My page generation time is 0.5 seconds after this simpel modification.

Anyways, THX FOR THIS GREAT HACK!!!

Hey, I installed this hack a while ago and it worked perfectly.I recently upgraded to 2.2.4, had a few problems but got it working in the end.Now I have another problem with it, it used to say something like 'There have been XX of new posts since your last visit' but now that part does not show up.I have checked the index.php file and the templates and they are all fine, can anybody help?

:disappointed:

One of the queries you said to run isnt valid - you had a ' where there shouldnt be one...

here they are correct

ALTER TABLE `thread` ADD INDEX(`lastpost`);
ALTER TABLE `post` ADD INDEX(`dateline`);

Which kind of index table size increment should generate adding those two or three index upon dates ?
And how a search on could be measured faster ?

Thnx

Frenck
04-15-2002, 03:41 PM
My "post" table size before creating the index:

Data 30,022 KB
Index 3,482 KB +
=============
Total 33,504 KB

After creating the index on dateline:

Data 30,022 KB
Index 4,276 KB +
=============
Total 34,298 KB

In my case the table has grown about 2.3698663% :)

Jawelin
04-15-2002, 06:05 PM
Thank you very much for these numbers. What about speed increase performances ? Are they appreciable ?

:)

Frenck

If you took time to take a look @ a post of me... a little higer...

Ow well lets cut & paste...

before:

Query: SELECT count(*) AS posts FROM post WHERE dateline > '1018738585'
Time before: 0.3487149477005
Time after: 1.9500440120697

as you can see, the query needs about 1.6 seconds to complete.
(about 100.000 posts in the forum)

after:

Query: SELECT count(*) AS posts FROM post WHERE dateline > '1018738585'
Time before: 0.41155600547791
Time after: 0.41288495063782

Wel.. I really like the result... Just 0.001328 seconds for the query to complete.

I think this result is really worth the 2.3698663% growing :classic:

Jawelin
04-17-2002, 11:34 AM
Very cool!
I added index on dateline fields in post, thread and user (join & lastvisit) ...

Ok, i fixed it myself (dont know if already it was fixed by someone).

To let this hack work properly with Avatar as Link 2 Hack (show real avatar on welcome box):

Before:
if ($avatarurl=='') {
of the added script

add:

$avatarlink=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT avatar2 FROM avatarlink WHERE userid=$bbuserinfo[userid]");
$avatarurl=$avatarlink[avatar2];

Hope this helps some of u.

trilOByte

I'm utterly puzzled. You are saying that if you upoad avatar.php from 2.2.5 to your 2.2.6 install it works fine, but not otherwise?

Given that many people have it working fine with the default avatar.php from 2.2.6, then you may have a corrupt file. Extract the original avatar.php from your 2.2.6 zip file and re-upload it.

Working fine on 2.2.6 apart from one small annoying problem.Although this might not be related to the hack.

On my board,in the welcome panel where it says "there have been # threads and # posts since your last visit" the threads count always goes up even if a new thread hasn't been created.

e.g If someone posts one reply in a thread,the welcome panel
says "there have been 1 thread and 1 post since your last visit."

Should it not say "there have been 0 threads and 1 post since your last visit."

And yes i do click "mark all forums read",before revisiting.

Any ideas.

hi,

in root/index.php find "lastpost" in the follow text:

$getnewthread=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT COUNT(*) AS threads FROM thread WHERE lastpost > '$bbuserinfo[lastvisit]'");

Replace "lastpost" with "dateline".

Now it should work.......

Great hack :D

I have a couple of private forums, and I have fudged around with the PHP to stop it from counting them in the total with some help from a friend (Thanks RCK;)):-

$getnewthread=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT COUNT(*) AS threads FROM thread WHERE lastpost > '$bbuserinfo[lastvisit]' and forumid <> '21' and forumid <> '19'");
$getnewpost=$DB_site->query_first("SELECT count(*) AS posts FROM post, thread WHERE lastpost > '$bbuserinfo[lastvisit]' and thread.threadid=post.threadid and thread.forumid <> '21' and thread.forumid <> '19'");

It works a treat apart from the fact it counts all the posts in a thread instead of just counting the new post.

I would be most grateful if one of you PHP/mySQL gods could help me with this one:)

Have installed, thanks for nice hack. Altered the templates pretty heavily, inspired by your own Genome Collective forum design (great work there btw dude).

Fourm should be at http://www.xaprief.com/forum/ soon :)
