Hi All,
Heading into week 2 of daily
Database error in vBulletin :
mysql_connect() [<a href='function.mysql-connect'>function.mysql-connect</a>]: Too many connections
/home/thesquir/public_html/forums/includes/class_core.php on line 317
errors.
This is out of a clear blue sky, after at least 6 months of entirely satisfactory service/no incidents from our provider- who shall remain unnamed for the time being. I've been chasing them, and after repeated "what's going on?" nagging, they advise that they're 'tweaking the settings'.
I've done a little research and am reasonably certain this isn't my responsibility as forum admin, and that it's not related to vB. Does anyone have a similar experience? Is this serious... a lack of expertise... how much of a problem is this? I'm trying to be patient but can't help wondering what's going on and how hard to push our provider.

It is pretty basic here. You could change some settings in my.cnf(max connections) but if you are on shared your site is most likely using too many resources.
Does this happen always around the same time? If so it is probably a cron task that is overloading your server.

Thanks for the quick response. Occurrences are all over the map, time-wise. We're on a semi-dedicated hosted server. Apart from automated BDay mail-outs, no jobs to speak of, will take another look. Is it possible that we're seeing this as a result of activity from another client account on the server?

Not sure what "Semi Dedicated" is.. but if you have access just raise your max connections a bit in my.cnf.
There may be plug ins running on your site as well that you can lessen the impact of or even disable.
If your host set it up properly then each MySQL user has its own configuration and other websites on the same server will not be the cause of this error.
Refer to https://mediatemple.net/community/products/dv/204404374/how-do-i-increase-the-mysql-connections-for-my-server on how to increase the max connections value.

Errr... Yes they will (or can be).
The connections limit is a server wide setting, so they could all be eaten up by a completely different user and/or site. They only way that could not happen is if each site had its own MySQL server (instance).

I'm not sure either. However, "vB Platinum" seems to be the choice of our forum admins, and so be it. Checked Logs, will go back for any Plugins, the only one that comes to mind is the Post Thank You hack.

Thanks, unfortunately (AFAIK) no root access, just cPanel.
I'm getting the impression that this is more of an annoyance than an escalating problem. If so I can continue forwarding the error messages and hope they figure it out. Site was slow on the weekend, they scheduled a MySQL restart, and at least the speed returned. Fewer errors this morning.
Yes, in that case you will have to ask your host to tweak your MySQL settings. They are not always willing to do that though.

It's an annoyance but when your server is running at peak some people will get that error rather than reaching the site..
I think your probably need to go up another package if they have anything higher than platinum. Maybe see if they have a plutonium package.:D
I highly doubt they will increase your max connections because you are using more then your current hosting package allows.

Yeah- I haven't heard any grousing yet, but that's exactly what happened to me yesterday, and I still don't know if it was my browser cache or the site itself. Plutonium... with Deuterium options. :)
Thanks all... I'll keep yanking on their chain.
