Do you really need to change the HTML code? Maybe it's possible to do what you want using pure CSS? Editing existing templates is not recommended as the changes may have merge conflict that you have to resolve whenever you upgrade.

Curious to know what HTML changes you are doing and where in the widget template?

What do you mean? SEO in vB5 is geared towards the Hummingbird algorithm.
There's a reason why it no longer has all those tags.
Search engines ignore them.

improving structure.
alt, titles by images & links
prevent useless h1
all topic names in channels h2
prevent same names in title in multipages
close all links to profiles
close all external links
fix h1 = h2 in threads
and etc
vb 5 in seo totaly crap
